the decision not only a departure but contradicts christopher wray's testimony in congress. he says it is a decision that produces what he calls a deeply disturbing result. he says it was the result of political pressure and the fbi and the american people deserv d better. you have to wonder whether he and his lawyer consider potential legal action. you may remember andrew mccabe when he was fired did suggest that he may under take legal action against the fbi because he said that firing was politically motivated. now strzok's lawyers are saying the firing was politically motivated. recall that after the texts surfaced in which strzok were saying things back and forth, that was criticized by the justice department inspector general. after the ig report came out earlier this year in june, the fbi director christopher wray says he was going to under take new kind of training for fbi agents and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. >> pete, thank you for that. >> the former assistant is joining me now, our msnbc legal analyst, i want to pick up what pete said. could he

today, senator lindsey graham wrote a letter to the director of the fbi, christopher wray and expressedthe, quote: double standard and mounting evidence of bias trump campaign during the 2016 election. joining us with more from washington is kristin fisher. kristin. >> judge, senator lindsey graham is accusing the fbi of a double standard because of the difference in terms of how it handled russian contacts with the trump campaign. first thousand handled a suspected chinese spy on democratic senator dianne feinstein's staff. sent a letter to fbi director christopher wray today senator graham said that quote so i appreciate the fbi's diligence in identifying the staff with potential ties to the chinese government and providing senator dianne feinstein with a defensive briefing i'm deeply troubled that the trump campaign was not afforded the same treatment. this letter comes just bays after senator graham said on "fox news sunday" that he wants to appoint another special counsel. this one to investigate the fbi and why a department of justice official bruce ohr was allowed to investigate

want to turn to peter strzok's ouster here, especially when you have that going against director wray'stimony in congress. what is next for the administration? how will they use this to benefit their game plan? >> well, peter strzok is somebody that the president has really used as the ultimate example for what he sees is bias within the fbi, within the justice department, that helped him, you know, make these claims, hurl his claims that the investigation is nothing but a biased witch-hunt. for the president, it is likely going to need to find a new target. you know, he's gone after comey, mccabe, this long list of people involved in the investigation, and so i wouldn't be surprised if the president winds up trying to find somebody else who he wants to make the bad guy here. there is a very strong pr war going on between the president and rudy guilliani trying to discredit this investigation in any way they can. >> all right. jill colvin, as also, thank you for being with us. >>> we want to turn to breaking news from london where there's been an incident outside the house of parliament

that was frankly the biggest news from this press conference, because the fbi director christopher wrayevealed something he hasn't revealed before. that is that there are current investigations involving all of the fbi's more than 50 field offices around the country. doesn't mean you have investigations in each district but that the field offices are involved looking at what they call foreign influence nexus. that would include individual trying to influence the campaign like with maria buttina who has been arrested and charges. the funneling of foreign money into the campaign which is not only illegal but raises hard questions about governments such as russia trying to influence this campaign. >> also tonight cnn has learned that the special counsel robert mueller has been trying to arrange an interview with a russian pop star. he encouraged the trump tower meeting promising dirt on hillary clinton. why would mueller want to talk to him? >> reporter: the family are sort of ground zero for this trump tower meeting. it really occurred because the son had reached out to his publicist and

christopher wray detailed an effort that the fbi has been working on. he didn't say it was directed bit the white house or attorney general, something the fbi was working on. you couldn't see the white house stand up with an event like this because it would offend the president, anger the president. what's changed is that after the helsinki press secretary -- press conference, he seemed to ro grovel in front of president putin and deny election interference and come back to the united states and deny it's happening now. you see them trying to dig out of this hole with this press conference, but the problem is you can't on the one hand convince the american people or try to convince the american people you are being serious about foreign interference in our election while the president, the press secretary and the national security advisor call it a witch hunt and call for the investigation to be shut down as the president did yesterday. they do not square. you will never convince the american people to take it seriously when the president doesn't. >> it
