i will now introduce director wray. christopher wray became the eighth director of the fbi on august 2, 2017. his decade of doj service has included positions as an assistant u.s. attorney, runcible associate deputy attorney general, an assistant attorney general of the criminal division where he supervised the sections that later became the national security division. as head of the fbi his duties include overseeing federal hate crime and terrorism investigation. under his leadership the fbi has spearheaded efforts to protect religious communities and places of worship violence, including trainings on how to make the more secure. thank you very much for being with us here today, director wray. wray. tell me what the biggest change you've experienced has been since you've taken your current position. >> well, i appreciate the fact that increasingly i find as i made my way from one corner of the country to another visiting all of the field offices, meeting with law enforcement in every state, community partners in every state, private sector partners in every state that increasingly out in the rest of america, people are recognizing that the fbi has had more than two investigations over the last few years. >> right. in may, attorney general barr noted that to the extent there was overreach in connection with the 2016 election, it seems to have been a few people at the top getting it into their heads that they know better than the american people. we know what happened in part because we've seen text messages between fbi investigators that show strong bias against then candidate donald trump. these texts suggest agents saw the purpose of the investigation as being very specific, tha

director wray, relief is in sight. i want to follow up a little bit with had a good discussion today about foreign interference in elections. and i am interested in your thoughts on the role of shell corporations that obscure the identity of the true actor behind the show corporation. in the jargon of this area is called the beneficial owner, the true, beneficial owner of the corporation. can you tell me the kind of ways in which the obscurity provided by such shell corporations interferes with law enforcement efforts generally? >> as a general matter, shell corporations, dummy entities in one sort of another, are often used as a way to conceal the true owner of a business. that ben can have the effect of not only frustrating regulatory requirements, but also of course law enforcement efforts. we spent a lot of our time across the vectors we investigate, having to cut through the form over substance quality that exists, alter egos that innocents are critically beneficial ownership. >> money laundering, fraud, criminal

and i think director wray made that point. on cybersecurity and the securing the voter apparatus, what concerns me more than that is the influence on people's minds on opinions, which the russians have learned to exploit as we learned fairly well and they will continue that more aggressively. i predict in 2020. >> yeah. the director wray spoke about the issue of deep fakes, right? which is highly advanced digital doctored media clips. you've read about deep fakes. we've been reading about that. is this something the average american should be worried about? >> absolutely. this is just yet another and in this case insidious tool that people with that have nefarious motives can motivate political opinion and views. mike made this point and i'll reinforce it here for him. this is part of the general assault of truth in this country and those endeavors and institutions that depend on truth and when the truth is harder and harder to come by, and when people are out consciously trying to pervert truth and these deep fakes represent
