but this fits into wray's style. who tried really hard to be boring, right? to keep his head down. it didn't minimize his interactions with trump, minimize his interactions with biden. and it didn't work. the politics found him. you know, to some extent, the decision that he made, which is the one that damned him in the eyes of trump, patel and the others, was to participate in the mar-a-lago search. he really had no alternative but to do so. and he said that on the 60 minutes interview, given the evidence that was presented to a judge for the search warrant, it was it was compelling evidence that trump had violated the law. and i don't think there's any question in terms of the when one looks at the two indictments of jack smith brought, that the one down in florida was more rooted in concrete, concrete fact. it didn't necessarily rely on any novelty in terms of legal theory. so wray tried to keep out of the rain, and the rain found wray and his temperament, as opposed to jim comey, was to, i think, to get out of do

our scott pelley sat down with outgoing fbi director christopher wray for tonight's "60 minutes" and talked to him about the challenges facing the new national security team. here is a preview of scott's interview and one threat that's been a particular concern to director wray. >> china's cyber program is by far and away the world's largest, bigger than that of every major nation combined, and has stolen more of americans' personal and corporate data than that of every nation big or small combined. but even beyond the cyber theft, there is another part of the chinese cyber threat that i think has not gotten the attention publicly that i think it desperately deserves and that is chinese government's prepositioning on american civilian critical infrastructure. to lie in wait on those networks, to be in a position to wreak havoc and can inflict real world harm at a time and place of their choosing. >> the chinese have already insinuated malware into critical american infrastructure? >> that's correct. >> like what? >> things like water treatment plants, we're talking about transportati

director wray has talked about the recruitment efforts from isis, isis-k linked to afghanistan. weeks ago, donald trump said not our fight when talking about the collapse of the regime in syria. but we know there is a resurgent isis group in syria, and we know what happens when a vacuum is left. do you think this perhaps changes the way that donald trump will view foreign policy? >> not likely. in part because it is not likely we are going to see a direct connection either to afghanistan or syria. i don't know but it is not the most likely scenario. these things will be shaped, as politicians will shape them. it is the case that finding counterterrorism over the horizon is much more difficult when you are not there. but these two incidents will not necessarily have bearing on that because they will most likely be cases of homegrown violent extremism. my biggest concern about syria, frankly, is that we have isis fighters who have been in detention since isis suffered a territorial defeat. if someone is not there to detain them or to get them to their home countries to be detained

trump had signaled his intent to replace wray with ardent supporter kash patel. wray says stepping down is the right thing for the bureau. >> my goal is to keep the focus on our mission, on the indispensable work each of you is doing every single day. and in my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important in how we do our work. >> wray was originally picked for the position under trump, but their relationship soured after fbi agents searched trump's mar-a-lago estate for classified documents two years ago. the head of the federal aviation administration is also stepping down. mike whitaker made the announcement in a message to faa employees. his resignation clears the way for trump to name his choice to lead the agency. whitaker's final day is january 20th, as mr. trump moves to place loyalists in his cabinet. he's floated the idea of using a tool known as recess appointments. if used, it would skip over the senate's typical role of vetting and approving nominees. it

christopher wray, the director, went after parents at school boards, pro-lifers. he went after catholics. he went after grandmas who peacefully protested right outside this building on january 6. he went to their homes and arrested them. not to mention the unprecedented raid on president trump's home in mar-a-lago, florida. what we've seen unfold at our nation's premier law enforcement agency over the last four years is a complete and absolute disgrace to the american people and to our constitution. not only has the public's trust in the fbi been completely eroded, it's been a disservice to all the great men and women in the fbi who commit every day to defending the constitution and protecting us as american citizens. it's going to take a lot of hard work to right this ship. trust has to be put back into the fbi. kash patel is the right man to do the job. he's qualified and has an impressive resume. he served in several national security and intelligently roles as federal prosecutor and as a public defender. not only is kash qualified, but he also has the courage
