but this fits into wray's style. who tried really hard to be boring, right? to keep his head down. it didn't minimize his interactions with trump, minimize his interactions with biden. and it didn't work. the politics found him. you know, to some extent, the decision that he made, which is the one that damned him in the eyes of trump, patel and the others, was to participate in the mar-a-lago search. he really had no alternative but to do so. and he said that on the 60 minutes interview, given the evidence that was presented to a judge for the search warrant, it was it was compelling evidence that trump had violated the law. and i don't think there's any question in terms of the when one looks at the two indictments of jack smith brought, that the one down in florida was more rooted in concrete, concrete fact. it didn't necessarily rely on any novelty in terms of legal theory. so wray tried to keep out of the rain, and the rain found wray and his temperament, as opposed to jim comey, was to, i think, to get out of do

our scott pelley sat down with outgoing fbi director christopher wray for tonight's "60 minutes" and talked to him about the challenges facing the new national security team. here is a preview of scott's interview and one threat that's been a particular concern to director wray. >> china's cyber program is by far and away the world's largest, bigger than that of every major nation combined, and has stolen more of americans' personal and corporate data than that of every nation big or small combined. but even beyond the cyber theft, there is another part of the chinese cyber threat that i think has not gotten the attention publicly that i think it desperately deserves and that is chinese government's prepositioning on american civilian critical infrastructure. to lie in wait on those networks, to be in a position to wreak havoc and can inflict real world harm at a time and place of their choosing. >> the chinese have already insinuated malware into critical american infrastructure? >> that's correct. >> like what? >> things like water treatment plants, we're talking about transportati

trump had signaled his intent to replace wray with ardent supporter kash patel. wray says stepping down is the right thing for the bureau. >> my goal is to keep the focus on our mission, on the indispensable work each of you is doing every single day. and in my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important in how we do our work. >> wray was originally picked for the position under trump, but their relationship soured after fbi agents searched trump's mar-a-lago estate for classified documents two years ago. the head of the federal aviation administration is also stepping down. mike whitaker made the announcement in a message to faa employees. his resignation clears the way for trump to name his choice to lead the agency. whitaker's final day is january 20th, as mr. trump moves to place loyalists in his cabinet. he's floated the idea of using a tool known as recess appointments. if used, it would skip over the senate's typical role of vetting and approving nominees. it

director wray has talked about the recruitment efforts from isis, isis-k linked to afghanistan. weeks ago, donald trump said not our fight when talking about the collapse of the regime in syria. but we know there is a resurgent isis group in syria, and we know what happens when a vacuum is left. do you think this perhaps changes the way that donald trump will view foreign policy? >> not likely. in part because it is not likely we are going to see a direct connection either to afghanistan or syria. i don't know but it is not the most likely scenario. these things will be shaped, as politicians will shape them. it is the case that finding counterterrorism over the horizon is much more difficult when you are not there. but these two incidents will not necessarily have bearing on that because they will most likely be cases of homegrown violent extremism. my biggest concern about syria, frankly, is that we have isis fighters who have been in detention since isis suffered a territorial defeat. if someone is not there to detain them or to get them to their home countries to be detained

>> i think chris wray, the fbi director understands the threat of islamic extremism.cluding the current white house speak clearly and speak forcefully about the threat that this islamic radicalism poses not just to israel and not just to our allies overseas but to the homeland. and it was really really alarming, trace, where you saw that anti-israel protest in new york city. have you slogans like globalize the intifada, that is, you know, pretty alarming and pro-terror message on the streets of new york city. you had pro-hamas, pro-hezbollah flags at that very rally. so, it's not just about the fbi really tracking all these threats that are constantly on the march, but it is also, you know, being village lent and being outspoken political leadership needs to speak out and crack down on a lot of indulgence of terrorism country. that kind of rhetoric can also lead to violent actions by a lone wolf as we saw in new orleans. >> i was saying i spent weeks and weeks in israel during the second intifada, it is not a pretty sight. moving on the speakers battle. scott perry on

i was reminded when christopher wray heading up the fbi said that the terror level in this country has level. we read about those here who will inspire acts like -- by the way some of the one that just happened in new orleans. they said that terror level threat is higher than before october 7th. one might wonder why there hasn't been a change in policy that has led to that. >> there has been a change in policy. quite frankly the number of individuals encountered at our southern border on a daily basis now is lower than it was in 2019. the last year before the pandemic. number one. number two, director christopher wray was speaking of the fact that we have a diverse set of challenges that our country is facing. i'm spoken publicly about this as well. we have the persistent threat of foreign terrorism that really gave rise to the department of homeland security in the first instance after the tragic events of 9/11. we have the individuals already resident in the united states radicalized to violence by a foreign terrorist ideology or over the last eight years, what we have seen, antigove

missouri senator josh hawley wants chris wray to testify on this. what are your thoughts on this?well, first of all, our hearts and prayers go out with the people that were both killed and injured in new orleans this past couple days and then also what happened in las vegas, they're tragedies. they're an example in the free world when you have people wanting to harm up, both of these had isis connections as it appears, isis-k more specifically. reconstituting a cell from afghanistan and that's a real problem. we need to get president trump in office, need to get kash patel in the fbi office, we need to get kristi noem into dhs so we can see what's going on across the nation and across the world, and these terrorist networks coming across the southern border will be devastating if we don't get ahold of those quickly. cheryl: emily has a question for you. >> i want to take it to the hill. do you think the tight vote margins going into the spike erase are a bad sign for moving president trump's agenda and what is your priority for the first 100 days. >> i don't think it's a bad sign.

so it is not wray and it is not the agents in the field office. they are down the road from where this approach comes. it comes from the top of government. >> rich: you look at what's the threat environment coming into the next administration. if this is a lone wolf or this is somebody who was radicalized, that is something this administration has dealt with. the trump administration has dealt with lone wolf attacks with radicalized people going back to administrations before then. what is the f.b.i. facing now going into the next four years? >> well, i agree with what speaker johnson said. you are dealing with a very degraded border security situation in which the incumbent administration has irresponsibly let really millions of people into the country who haven't been vetted. that can only contribute to instability and to the extent that we have a problem with jihadist ideology and that kind of radicalization. that can only make the problem much worse. so i think there is a lot of things where the f.b.i. gets criticism where, you know, it is pro

saying he would fire wray if he stayed on.lacement, kash patel, his confirmation hearing not yet scheduled, but suggestions it would fall into february because pam bondi would have to have hers first. so a gap in security and are you questioning kash patel's ability to lead that agency? >> put that aside. what i've heard is director wray is planning on leaving january 20. that means there would be an acting director in place. this sunt isn't the time to have a director who's been there for seven years walking out the door, orientation briefings and so forth. i think through this period over the next several weeks there needs to be some continuity in the leadership of the nation's premiere law enforcement agency. >> david, let's talk about the latest in the investigation and as the -- mr. secretary noted, the idea there might be links to what happened in las vegas. what do we know about the latest of both men here? >> so, i want -- ken dilanian is going to talk in a minute but this is coming by ken dilanian, amy winter and thre

i think christopher wray is well informed and well aware of this the problem. a gao report in 2023 that said that the if fbi had doubled the number of domestic terror investigations since 2020. so they are doing those investigations. if i think so to dan's point, the public's impression is that they're going after people that perhaps are not really the problem. paul: right. >> and, of course, there's the famous 2023 memo from the fbi that said catholics attending the latin mass were a suspicious group. there was also in the fort hood attack the department of defense called it a workplace violence event. and, of course, mayorkas, the secretary of homeland security, has said that the big problem in the u.s. is white white supremacy. so that all feeds into this feeling for the public that they're not really paying attention to this other problem which is causing a lot of violence, the isis threat. paul: kim, that's particularly true for a lot of republicans who say the fbi's focused just too much -- and this goes back to, of course, 2016 -- on donald trump. and you're right, director wray has been raising the flag on on lone wolf attacks, in fact, just kind of similar to if this person in new orleans turns out to be a lone wolf. that's just exactly what the director was talking about. um, and yeah, i think that human nature complacency, the longer we go without an attack, the more complacent we get that not much is going to happen. then one happens and we're all on heightened alert for a while. and then for a while, no attacks happen and then we get complacent again. i think that's human nature. i think that's something we have to fight against in law enforcement. and especially event security. um, and hopefully this is another wake up call. and so, you know, we take the steps that that kind of avoid that kind of complacency. >> yeah. and i do say we have been speaking a lot about the details of the investigation. but bobby, you know, obviously all of us thinking about those families and people still in the hospital at this hour in grave condition. bob baer we will leave it there for now. thanks so much. >> thank you for having me. >> no
