wright, you've previously said you wanted to see justice served. do you feel like with this sentence that you were able to get justice? >> no, i feel like the justice system failed us. it failed my son. it failed our community. it's telling, you know, the public that my son's life wasn't worth at least even the sentencing guidelines. going below that was not okay. >> and, mr. crump, i want to ask, is the family considering any other legal action in this case? >> well, we're going to bring a civil action in this matter, certainly, because it's outrageous. we believe what happened in the sentence, there are black people who have greater sentences for selling marijuana than this white police woman got for killing this young black man, and it's very troubling because you think about the fact that a black police officer in that same courtroom in 2019 who was convicted of a lesser charge, manslaughter 2, was given 12 1/2 years when he killed a white woman in the very similar manner than kim potter because he was trying to protect an officer's life too an

now the family of daunte wright took to the microphone.ng hole in their heart with the loss of a loved one, brother, son, father, a friend. this former officer, herself, stepped up to the mikecmicropho turned directly to the wright family and apologized. here is that moment. >> when you said i didn't look at you during the trial, i don't believe i had a right to. i didn't have a right to be in the same room with you. i am so sorry that i hurt you so badly. i feel broken and devastated for all of you. >> reporter: the sentence came shortly after that moment. we were expecting a lengthier sentence. sentencing guidelines would have called for a range between 6 and 8 and a half years nor someone convicted but without a prior criminal history. the judge said she thought a lesser sentence was warranted for two reasons. first, this was a chaotic scene going on. she said that in this case this officer didn't intend to fatally shoot daunte wright. the family blasting this decision. calling it a miscarriage of justice. the attorney general's office

wright has been john henry, who's in minneapolis. and john, it's been a difficult days at dante wright's family, but a conclusion has been reached. that's right. that was dante wright's mother speaking before the sentencing. after the sentence. they were not happy with that 24 month sentence, 16 months of it being served in prison. and since she's has already served kim potter has already served $58.00 days in jail. that will be subtracted, so the sentence to continue was more like 14 months, and the family says that simply didn't do justice to the loss that they are suffering the life of this 20 year old young man a father. but the judge says that kim potter was trying to do the right thing that she was justified in firing what she thought was her taser, but she made a terrible mistake and pulled out her gun instead. killing dante wright, the judge says there was, she doesn't need to be rehabilitated because she didn't intend to commit a crime. shows that prison time was to represent the penalty that needs to be paid due to the loss

the wright family has also scheduled a news conference for later today. >>> minnesota is making a move toward restricting the use of so-called no-knock warrants after a black man was killed by police. a committee of house lawmakers has passed a bill that would limit the use of those warrants to cases when someone is being held against their will. the vote came on the same day as amir locke's funeral. he was shot by police executing a no-knock warrant. he was not a suspect. but police and lawmakers thursday debated whether restricting those warrants is a good thing. >> we have the opportunity to communicate to our cops on the street that their leadership will not put them in a position where their safety is compromised. we have the opportunity the take this bull further and fully ban the use of no-knock warrants. >> there are perhaps members or supporters of this bill who have no idea what it is we're dealing with on the streets. we are not dealing with people who simply come to the door and answer it because we knock and ask them politely. >> the aclu is calling for the officer who kil
