changing that. cbs north carolina reporter emma wright is at the garner fire department this morning with more on this story. emma? >> reporter: the chief says no one has gotten a raise since 2008. he says the salary needs to keep up with the increasing cost of living here in wake county and in garner. the chief says the department's work load has gone up the past few years, they respond to thousands of calls per year, cover 84 square miles which is a lot of work. he says he's asking for $37,000, he says right now the base salary is only about $30,000. the state average is $36,000. so he thinks $37,000 is a fair number. we talked with one firefighter who started at the department as a volunteer and he says he really hopes the board agrees >> with all the classes we're taking, the certifications we're getting, all the calls we're getting, how active we are in our community, the time we're missing from our families, i think as long as they take a look at that and how much we are putting on the line everyday, i think that will make a difference. >> reporter: that meeting about the salary increase is toni

changed forever. greg palkot, thank you. >>> the fbi breaking into one of the san bernardino terrorist's e iphones without the help of apple. kelly wright is live with what it means for the controversy. >> here it is. in a sunny new development the u.s. justice department managed to break into the iphone belonging to syed farook. they have long been hoping data from that phone will give insight into the december terror attack that took 14 lives. they say it may hold information on another possible terror plot and suspects in the united states. apple has refused to help the fbi break into the phone citing privacy concerns. it made a debate between national security and personal rights to privacy. last week the feds announced they were trying to third party method to break through the phone's inscription -- encryption software. the government dropped the lawsuit against the apple company. apple ceo tim cook reacted to the news saying quote apple believes deeply that people in the united states and around the world deserve data protection, security and privacy. sacrificing one for the other only puts people and countries at greater risk. t

changes everything. ♪ >>> the political world is watching closely as donald trump holds campaign events this weekend. hello, everyone. welcome to " america's news headquarters. >> i'm kelly wrightg a bit of a scare in ohio. secret service rushing on stage to form a wall around him. protecting him from a protester. all of this just hours after the front runner cancelled a rally in chicago over fears of violence there. anti trump protesters are managing to pack the uic pavilion where he was set to speak. sparking fights both inside and out.

wright, who opposes the monument in olde town, says he's asked the governor to veto the bill. a law from 1998 already bans local governments from removing war monuments, but the sponsor of the new bill changed the language slightly. it would protect all war monuments, no matter when they were built. the norfolk school board is giving an elementary school building back to the city. board members voted unanimously to turn over oakwood elementary school, off central business park drive. a school spokeswoman says the city requested the property because it has a buyer. a city spokersperson would only say, the city is talking with a private company about expanding its business. if the deal goes through, the company would tear the school down. the students who go to oakwood would move to richard bowling elementary, a few miles away. this morning, we have new information about which local sports authority stores are closing. this after the company filed for bankruptcy. the store on coliseum drive in hampton, the one at janaf in norfolk, and mall in virginia beach are among the 140 across the country that are shuttering. sports authority used to be the largest sporting goods retailer in the country.
