america. much of hollywood has gone dark amid a push from unions representing actors, writers and others that have gone on strike. the actors union joined the writers guild week adding thousands more voices to the cause. they are fighting the major movie studios and streaming platforms for better pay, residuals, benefits and protections over the use of artificial intelligence. the group representing the studio says they already offered a new deal. a claim that the union refuted. for more i am joined by the national executive director and chief negotiator for the union. thank you for joining us. at the center of this strike is the disparity in pay and access to streaming profits, reduced residuals and concerns about the negative impact of artificial intelligence on the industry. let's focus on the last issue, what are the main concerns for actors and writers on how ai might negatively impact the industry? >> it is a question of their personal rights, it is a question that resonates with all of us, the idea that a corporation could essentially use their economic power to force you to give them the right to control your image, likeness, voice and create dig

joining colleagues writers from writers guild of america on strike since may. uaranteed numbers of writers per room and increased pay as well as regulation of the use of artificial intelligence in the writing process. now actors say they want increased minimum pay rates, increased streaming residuals and guarantees from studio and production companies on exactly how a.i. will be used. they are expected to cost the industry billions in losses but strikers say it's necessarily. it has an impact on adjacent businesses like a wooden nickel providing lighting equipment and other things to productions as well. the owner there says the strikes have wiped out half his traffic. >> all the camera people, all the grips, electrics are all suffering. every day i'm getting a call or resume saying to me hey, it's slow. got any work there? sadly i have to say to them we're not hiring at this time. >> again this is the first time in over 60 years that hollywood's actors and writers are on strike together at the exact same time. as for the studios, the alliance representing the s

guild announced an extension of contract negotiations with studios. earlier 180,000 members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike. >> they could still join the writers guild of america the picket lines. as that strike wears on, there are a lot of other businesses forced to lay off their workers, drivers, dry cleans, make jump artists, and others. >> reporter: a janitor was laid off from paramount studios shortly after the writers strike began. fewer productions means less to clean. nearly two months later she's collecting plastic bottles for cash. she's buying cheaper groceries and says she'll soon lose health insurance and worries about buying her diabetes education. and now there's been announced an extension of talks with its studios while many have overwhelmingly announced a strike. it could add more than 11,000 writers already on the picket line and halt more productions. the few savings that i had are going away. when am i going to work again or what am i going to do, i don't know. >> reporter: mark meyer jr. laid off a lot of employees in the set and prop business in early june. this warehouse is usually buzzing with people loading tables, lamps into 15 truck
