voters heading to the polls in virginia, wtop political analyst mark plotkin joining us now. mark, i know the republicans are feeling pretty good about maybe having a clean sweep in that state for once. >> they sure do. they won the governorship, the lieutenant governorship, the attorney general. they control the house overwhelmly overwhelmingly and the only thing they don't control is the state senate and if they win two seats, they can control everything and so think the 2 to win that state senate -- want to win that state senate and think that portends well for next year. you know, president obama was the first democrat since 1964 to win the commonwealth. so they think this is a way. >> it sounds like at least from an outsider's perspective that after the 2008 election president obama obviously carried the state handily that things have sort of gotten really hard right in virginia. is that the case? >> i don't think it's so much hard right is the republicans are basically better organized when there's a smaller universe. there were 525,000 more people who voted in the elec

we read a bit of that lawyer as he release -- campaign wtop political analyst mark plotkin.read a bit of that lawyer's partial statement tonight. >> i'm not a lawyer, nor do i play one on tv, but i thought that was absolutely very damaging because there was no denial in the statement. it was not consistent with herman cain's remarks. it was almost a rationalization for saying it's none of your business. you shouldn't be talking about this. this was a private consensual relationship. that is the allegation is why are we even talking about it? so that i think actually accelerated or enhanced the scope of the story. >> a lot of people who watched herman cain's interview today on cnn and i guess it was fortuitous, they were going to have him on anyway and herman cain decided to use it as a platform to get ahead of this story flat out denials and i think some other watchers thinking we're going to see a lot of video running with proof showing the other way and this could be the downfall of the campaign. did you get that sense? >> yeah. i really do. the word pattern seems to come
