well, the truth is that in the court case, there was not a hate crime in wyoming. the case built by the prosecution, these guys were not convicted of a height crime. the evidence was not presented to a jury that it was a hate crime. they were convicted of felony murder and related charges including kidnapping, you know, some aggravating factors. that's what they were convicted of. the decision that this was a hate crime was made, okay, by the media before these guys had even been arraigned, before matthew was dead and before they were even arraigned for the murder. it was already considered a de facto hate crime. that happened almost overnight. before matthew was dead, the president, bill clinton, was making statements saying that because of this we need to pass the hate crime law that is stalled in congress. from my vantage point as a writer, the book is not an attempt to prove that this wasn't a hate crime. i acknowledge in the book that, obviously, hatred was a factor in some of what was going on, but this was a confluence of several factors, okay? not just mcki
