it's going to be very difficult with the states that come after wyoming, and wyoming was taylor mades, it's a majority white state, it's very densely -- it's not densely populated. the least populated state in the united states. it's a caucus. it's in the west. you know, the focus on progressivism has been pretty keen among democrats, so again, taylor made for bernie sanders. this was not a surprise. moving forward the demographics get difficult for him and the states that come after wyoming, incredibly delegate rich states that will help hillary add to her math which continues to be in her favor. >> it's true that even if he wins wyoming he still has a long way to go to catch up to hillary clinton in terms of delegate count. how confident is the sanders camp he'll be able to do that? >> there is this old political organizing phrase called the river. it is when the momentum is so large that you cannot stop it. you can see that's what's happen pg right now with bernie sanders' campaign. when he's won eight of the nine last primaries and caucuses in not just white liberal northeastern

he's out in wyoming. with that huge lead, that has shifted trump, from his usual slamming the gop opponents to slamming the actual gop delegate process. at a rally earlier today in syracuse, he called the process dirty, and he hit the republican national committee saying that they need to fix it and quickly, predicting if they didn't, they would have huge problems come july at that convention. now, of course, that's not the first time that he has insinuated some kind of situation happening for the party at the convention in july. he said just a month ago that there might be protests if he was denied the nomination. now, the rnc national -- the rnc chairman reince priebus, excuse me, he responded on cnn yesterday saying that the process is the normal process, and that it's been the same for years, saying that he should have learned the process ahead of time. pamela? >> all right, tough to hear you there. clearly, a loud crowd. where donald trump is speaking, and in dexter, new york. kristen holmes, thank y

we heard that from the official there in wyoming. is that concerning at all that you know, it was closer than expected? >> i don't think so. again, this is a small state, there's 14 delegates at hand here. you know, as we move forward to new york and we move forward and talk about this, one of the things, the clinton campaign has been good about strategizing. they have prepared for every single angle of this campaign. except for the things they can't control. such as a movement. and what that means is that these superdelegates are not just numbers, they are people to have to answer to voters, elected officials that want a career in politics so when you see the majority of the party under the age of 50 siding with one candidate overwhelmingly so, and you'll see that in new york among all demographics, you see that they are going to be thinking about the future, who are we as a party. do we want to represent the past, and in many -- in a lot of democratic circles, they are basically showing the divide between those who are still hurtin

wyoming has just selected its delegates for the gop election, let's go to ana cabrera in wyoming. the cruz camp is celebrating here. they just did a clean sweep of all of these delegates, the 14 that were elected here at the gop state convention. now, that essential met expectations by all of the campaigns. we heard from the kasich campaign, that they weren't expecting to pick up any delegates, the trump campaign also didn't commit any resources to the state because they really didn't expect this to be a win in their column. the cruz campaign campaigned hard here. they had a grassroots organization that they began to establish as far back as the fall. they really did expect to come out with the majority, if not all, and of course they did come out with all of the delegates, 14 who were elected here today. they also had 9 delegates from wyoming that had been elected last month at the county convention. so, again, ted cruz picking up an additional 14 delegates to add to his column today. pam? >> and you said that it's expected ted cruz would win. but was there any indication from pe

joining me now is the former wyoming secretary of state and a life long wyoming democrat joining us fromople filling the room before they caucus. so good to see you. you wrote an opinion piece in support of hillary clinton. i would love to read a bit from your column. you write this. given the state of the nominating race it likely will be one of the most meaningful and impactful votes a wyoming democrat will cast in years. why do you believe that and what explains what is expected to be a very high turnout today? >> wyoming is probably the reddest of the red states in the united states of america. we have not voted for a democrat for president since 1964. so the general election our small democratic vote loses. but in the caucus we have an opportunity to let the voice be heard in the selection of a candidate. when there isn't a real race such as when president obama ran for reelection the caucus turnout declines. we do have a higher turnout and we are delighted to have everyone here today. >> and that includes four super delegates who apparently have pledged their support to hillary cli

so let's begin in wyoming. where bernie sanders is hoping to cut off clinton's delegate lead today. clinton is hoping for a big win after collecting key endorsements from the state's top democrats. talk more about it with wyoming state representative and bernie sanders supporter charles pelke who is joining us on the phone. representative, who should feel confident in wyoming now? >> well, if laramie is any indication, bernie sanders will do well. we have a massive turnout at the albany county caucus. and i would guess at least 80% of those people are bernie supporters, maybe less. it's a big turnout. i think that, you know, the caucus structure tends to favor bernie sanders i think largely because it requires a degree of enthusiasm and certainly this campaign has generated quite a bit of enthusiasm, particularly among young people. >> right. so bernie sanders has a trend going, he does well, he does better than hillary clinton does in the caucuses, but in the case of wyoming where hillary clinton and her camp

nbc's kristen dahlgren is in cheyenne, wyoming.ted about the outcome of this or is it a foregone conclusion? >> reporter: no, still excited, and they're actually still counting as we speak. you can see in the gym, it's a lot less crowded, a few people waiting to hear those results for this county, and then later on in another hour or two we should hear the statewide results. this was a packed gym while the caucus was going on. you asked what voters are saying, let's talk to some of them. tyler moore is a bernie supporter. show them how much of a bernie supporter you are. can you see this? we've got the bernie tattoo. a really dedicated voter. we've been talking about turnout and about 800 people turned out to this location, a little lower than some predicted. experts say that bernie does really well when there's high voter turnout. were you disappointed? >> it's never disappointing when you see this many people vote and be involved in the political system. but we were expecting a few more people to show up, a little more enthusiasm

let's get to cnn's ana cabrera at the wyoming convention with more on cruz's possible sweep of wyoming. ana, is it as simple as show the facetime and you win the majority of support? >> reporter: it is not that simple, fred, but pressure is definitely on the cruz campaign. i can tell you there are more ted cruz signs than cowboy hats at the wyoming state convention. you get the sense he has a huge contingency of people that are supporting him, talking to those who have been in the hallway just outside the convention hall. they're big ted cruz and loyal ted cruz supporters. i want to give you a little more perspective. there are more than 60 delegate candidates that want one of the 14 spots you mention to go on to the rnc. when you look at the list, two-thirds of them approximately have pledged their support to ted cruz. six of those candidates pledged support to donald trump. zero for john kasich. and the remaining are unpledged delegates. wyoming is one of those states that can send unpledged delegates to the rnc. so there's a little bit of a movement to try to get as many of the unpl

texas senator ted cruz is in wyoming.g in the polls in new york and has set his sights on the western state where is he has much stronger support with donald trump, having an overwhelming lead for the gop here. in new york and new york city. john roberts joins us live from new york where trump held a rally today. his numbers keep going up and up in new york. >> reporter: i'll tell you, julie, what tuesday night is going to be all about for donald trump here in the empire state is about momentum. you've got the big new york primary with 95 delegates coming at in just 3 navideh, then a week after that, you've got five contests, you've got connecticut, pennsylvania, maryland, rhode island, and delaware. donald trump leads in all of those. hoping he can build up a big head of steam on tuesday in new york. he can run the table the following tuesday and kind of set a snowball rolling downhill in motion throughout the rest of the primaries. they'll probably run into some difficulty with ted cruz in places like indiana and nebras

he wants toll pigss to drill down into wyoming issues.s he said, hey, if you give him -- we want the dinner and flowers, we don't want to give it away right now basically. so it's strategizing for folks coming here, local activists, people in the grass-roots looking to have a presence from cleveland. let me give you an example here. we have another prop for you ayman, this is the cruz delegate slate. they want people to choose the names on this ballot so you go through on the actual ballot, match it up, this is what the cruz campaign is going to happen and you turn everything in. so we're a couple hours away from this. cruz during his speech talked about issues that are important to folks in wyoming like, for example, land rights. he got a big ovation when he brought that up and he urged people to choose him, obviously, over the other candidates, donald trump had a surrogate here, john kasich had a surrogate here but even trump's aide is telling the associated press this morning that they believe cruz will basically sweep these 14 delegat

so one other thing to watch coming out of wyoming. so there's 14 delegates but really it sort of is something that we have to watch going forward. what exactly it means for both of these candidates. >> all right my thanks to nbc's kristen dahlgren live in cheyenne there. let's move on to the republican side of the debate. nbc's jacob rascon is live in rochester, new york, where donald trump is expected to hold a rally later this afternoon. jacob, there's been, you know, some talk that it's been a light weekend for the campaign for donald trump himself, not a lot of public events at least. is this a sign of confidence, or do you think this is more a sign that he's tied down with some of the issues going on behind the scenes with trying to reorganize this campaign? >> so it's been an interesting week for donald trump, because he initially had some events in colorado and california. and that was going to be a big deal because he was going to go there into the colorado state convention and try to wrangle some delegates. but he canceled th

senator cruz is in wyoming, not in new york.would seem to me he would get more delegates in new york if he could win new york, but he's obviously made a decision, running a bad third in polls, he is not there. good for him, that's his strategic decision to make as donald trump makes the same kind of decisions, any candidate does. >> jeffrey, why is donald trump then whining and complaining about the fact he won't get delegates in wyoming or in colorado when he had opportunity to go there himself and pitch to the people of colorado why they should choose him. he chose not to because he doesn't care about them. that's insulting to them. he has a private jet, he can fly there all he wants. >> tara, you make decisions on what's best for the campaign at the moment. obviously the best thing for him is to be in new york. >> why? >> he is poised to win significantly. that's what you do, tara. ted cruz is not there today. john kasich is there. you know, if john kasich can be there arguing with some reporter in new york, i don't understan

wyoming. wyoming did not have a popular vote in all of this.ead, in a series of party meetings through march and april, they decided what to do with their 29 delegates. ted cruz's team went up there, they worked those party officials, and he came out of wyoming with 24 of the 29 delegates. what about kansas down here? kansas did have a vote. they had a caucus system. march 5th, 40 delegates up for grabs. they all went in there and, again, the cruz campaign worked the caucuses very well. in the end, he came out with more than a half of the delegates from kansas while trump walked away with only nine of them. different story, different strategy when you move across to south carolina. this was a big win for donald trump. remember this back in february? 50 delegates, trump walked away with all 50 of them there. big win. but what has happened since? the cruz people have said, look, all these people become unbound after the first vote in a contested convention. they have been working to convert some of trump's 50 into double agents. people who will c

wyoming only has one congressional district. basically, what that means is if you're winning a congressional district or in the case of wyoming, if you're winning a state, you have to win big to get a delegate advantage out of it. bernie sanders won wyoming on saturday. he got 56% of the vote. to have an actual delegate advantage because of these proportional rules, you really have to be winning with 57% or more. so sanders got close to the point where he would have flipped it to like an 8-6 win in the delegates, but he didn't actually get over that number. >> so steve, let's go to the republican side. i want to pick up on something you said that over the weekend, the 34 delegates on the republican party, cruz outorganized and outhustled, to use your terms, the trump campaign. how do you do no you do you do ? what exactly does that mean? how do you get the 34 delegates and what do they to? ? it means the cruz campaign has been busy for like a year in colorado, identifying, putting people in place, first of all, to organize the s

we just won wyoming. [ cheering ] >> reporter: bernie sanders was supposed to win wyoming. it's mostly white and rural and the west he's had success there and it was a caucus. he collects seven of those 14 delegates and hillary clinton wins six, which means at the very most, bernie will be able to say two delegates on clinton's 200 something lead. what it means is it continues the momentum narrative for the sanders campaign. they have now won eight of the last nine election contests against clinton. it's a fact that could only help the sanders camp gain more support in new york where it 291 delegates are in new york. sanders was down by 20 points plus in december. polls show he's at least cut that to about half. >> you got to love jane sanders. she's a good egg. no endorsement here. just for jane. that's all i'm saying. but let's talk about the candidates, clinton and senator sanders. both holding events in new york today. talk to us more about that. >> reporter: yeah, they were both here in new york. let me come up with a quick point. it's important to understand that the
