sometimes they were here in california and sometimes they were in wyoming. my wife had no clue about any of this stuff. she would always say you're kidding. one of the lessons that most people don't realize is that all of this begins with what happened on january the 24th 1848. yes, gold at sutters mill. that brought a large number of chinese. in 1860's showed there were 40,000 chinese registered here in california. an enormous migration. was referred to as gold mountain and the chinese culture. the chinese also contributed heavily to the labor pool that built the continental railroad. some estimates more than 40% of the railroad workers were chinese. this is the famous photograph and you will notice that there is not one chinese face to be found. they were a forgotten part of the history. the california railway, union pacific railway all worked on by huge crews of chinese. wonderful photos in the california state archives. there was growing anti-chinese throughout thent western united states. this came from conservative groups and liberal groups especially
