and headed out to wyoming. he was probably very early on in his career he was not well known but this was a farewell to arms and i feel like you need to get it finish and that's why he was here to find some quiet time to finish the book. the reason he ended up coming to big horn was that his friend that they were ambulance drivers in the first world war in italy i'm not sure how he was invited to come here but he was invited to come to the ranch which was in the big horn's. and they could stop here on their way to jackson because ernest was invited to jackson to try to finish his book there. when they got to big horn they just decided to stay. >> bill stayed for a couple of weeks and there was so much going on up there that he decided he needed to work somewhere else. were talking 1928 note air-conditioning. i'm sure it was very miserable and loud right by the train station. he decided to go to another place there was a bedroom there that was called the hemingway room. i believe he probably was there pretty muc

visit ton our sheridan, wyoming, we take you to the brinton museum to look at american and indian art that makes up the collection. >> the brinton museum is a very complex institution because not only are we an art museum, but we are also history and we have natural history as well. we lie on 620 acres of beautiful ranch land here. we interpret the ranch land and interpret the history, we interpret the native american history. there are a lot of wheels to this institution. basically our hope is to give people a view of why this area is important and why it deserves being preserved and seen by people from all over the world. brinton verse comes to the big horn mountains in 1910. that's when he decided to build a ranch here, which he makes good on in 1923. the ranch, the purchase of the ranch in 1923 serves as the impetus for this collection and the ranch becomes the repository for his collecting. he buys over 200 works by edward boreen, the 35 works you see of rice behind me. throughime he is collecting -- he dies rather prematurely in 1936 and has 650 works of art here. and another 35

these include montana, wyoming, and idaho, all three. and they are all part of that scene of-in 2019, everyone wants to live here. we are suddenly on everybody's list, top 20 or at worst top 10, even worse, top five places to live. it is understandable because yellowstone national park is the centerpiece. an international airport, university, plus the best hiking, hunting, fishing, world-class skiing, all of those things. that i started to say, money can buy, or that free can give you. it has really ramped up the cost of housing. so there's kind of a sadness i think to yellowstone's future. is it going to be a place just for rich people? what about this democracy that the national park service has pushed so long since it was established, and arguably so well. for the american public. can they still afford to come here. how about visitation. it was a lot easier when i started in yellowstone and there were 2.2 visitors. now it is 4.2 million people just in yellowstone. what is the solution? nobody knows the answer. >> our look at bozeman c

this was during red cloud's war along the bozeman trail, which goes close to the bighorn basin in wyoming. the sioux, cheyenne, were resisting and any and all wagon trains, any and all cattle trains, coming up the bozeman trail. nelson story, for he could proceed on the bozeman trail, he had to have at least 30 armed men in his group. he had 1000 head of cattle. he had a lot of wagons loaded with groceries because he also wanted to start a mercantile store when he got there, so he had enough men armed with remington rifles. they headed up the bozeman trail. they had several scrapes with some sioux warriors, and a couple of his men, as they made their way out through wyoming, couple of his men were killed. but he did make it all the way to the yellowstone river right on the other side of the bozeman pass. nelson story made it to the yellowstone river, established a cattle ranch over there. he arrived early december, 1866. that was his first step in building what you could certainly argue was an empire. after the cattle drive, he has a log cabin will on main street, and he begins partnering

the wyoming territory was the first territory at that point in time to give women the vote. they became the first state to do so when they obtained statehood in 1890. interestingly, no states east of the mississippi gave women the right to vote in the 19th century. here, we have a petition from utah. utah is a really interesting case. because utah had a mormon majority legislature, congress was really opposed to the practice of polygamy. they made a number of efforts in the latter part of the 19th century to try and outlaw the practice. this petition is from women who had already gotten the right to vote from utah. that was when congress was trying to pass legislation to outlaw polygamy. they make lovely arguments about the fact that women manage to maintain their respective eligibility and urged congress not to take the vote from them when they passed that legislation. congress was not successful. about a decade later, women in utah did lose the vote when congress passed anti-polygamy legislation, but once utah got its statehood, they gave the boat back to women. one more r
