i am ryan yamamoto. >> i am elizabeth cook. the city council is voting on new labor agreements but the mayor is speaking out against the deal saying the city cannot afford it. >> anne makovec is following the latest developments for us. anne? >> yes, it will create a budget deficit for this fiscal year, so that would need to be made up with a mix of cuts and eliminating vacant positions. these were the deals that were struck last month. the plan would give employees an immediate 6% pay raise starting in july plus a pay increase of 3.5% in 2025. union workers say it is about time. >> i think the city of san jose is expansive and inclusive enough to have services and pay staff a livable wage. i don't think it is an either/or, i think it is an end-end. >> though this is more about illuminating vacant positions than laying anybody off, the mayor says the city cannot afford the pay raises and plans to vote against the contracts. >> so for those who support these raises, i think they have a responsibility to say what they want to cut
