joining me now is yamiche alcindor, nbc news washington correspondent who is just back from springfieldo haitian immigrants about the lies republicans are spreading about them. yamiche, thanks for joining me. what are they saying to you? how do they feel about this? >> well, haitian immigrants really are heartbroken and shocked about what's going on. i talked to one haitian man who immigrated a few months ago, too scared to go on cam ration but told me that really he's feeling retraumatized because he already left haiti, fleeing gang violence, fleeing insecurity, he didn't want to leave but he had to leave he felt like, and then he came legally -- legally to springfield, ohio, and is now working a construction job but his co-workers are now repeatedly asking him if he eats cats. he feels depressed, feels so sad about this situation and has some friends that are telling him that they might leave springfield and leave the idea of the american dream they were hoping to live here. so it really is in some ways very heart breaking and really a tough situation and the tension there was so palp

yamiche alcindor, thank you.ricia, the latest "atlanta journal-constitution" poll shows a tight race between trump and harris in georgia. how are these stories resonating with voters? >> like you said, this is a razor thin toss up race in georgia. we're finding out that about one in ten georgians say this is their primary issue. that's not a huge number. 10% doesn't register against the economy or inflation, huge issues in georgia, and across the country but in a very tight race, the harris campaign really believes that those one in ten voters will come out and vote for her. the majority of those voters are moderate and independent voters, and this is the first presidential election we have had since our six-week abortion ban went into effect. we don't know what that does. we had a governor who signed the ban elected by huge margins in 2022. the harris campaign believes, and that's why she's coming in suburban atlanta to push the issue, this is something that will connect with women who may or may not have been f

nbc news washington correspondent yamiche alcindor.philadelphia, ashley etienne, former communications director for vice president kamala harris and republican strategist sara fagan. thanks to all of you for being here. yamiche, i'll start with you. set the stage. you have been all over reporting of what is happening inside debate prep inside harris world. tell us what you have. >> sources who are familiar with how vice president harris is preparing for the debate tells me she is diligently getting ready for this by going to a hotel in pittsburgh with mock debates with an aide dressing like former president donald trump and an aide who did the same role for hillary clinton in 2016. she has a number of missions with this debate. the first is she really wants to make sure that americans who are undecided or who don't know her back story that they really walk away understanding her policy stances and who she is, her biography. they are also, i am told, that she needles donald trump and that she gets him to lash out possibly, but also she

let me play a little bit of what yamiche alcindor was able to gather in springfield, ohio, after thisegation from the debate stage, and here's a little bit with a haitian immigrant advocate. >> what does it feel like to now have to deal with this trauma? >> it's hard on them. it's hard on them because they have to get a job, to settle down, to hear all of these false accusations. i can tell you, that it's really hard on them. they are being more traumatized, not knowing what the future will hold for them. >> i keep thinking about an interview that i did in -- at the end of 2020, right before the election. i was in pennsylvania. and donald trump was going on about fraud, saying mail-in ballots were fraud. and there was no way he could lose his election. if his supporters believed him, what would they do if he did, in fact, lose the election, and i spoke to one guy, and he told me he would be willing to take up arms, he could get violent. that happened. it seemed insane in the moment, but it happened a few months later, and if donald trump is out there, and j.d. vance and ted cruz and r

nbc's yamiche alcindor is here and garrett haake covering former president trump and also with us, eugene daniels and former missouri democratic senator claire mccaskill joins us here in studio. great to have all of you here. garrett, you spoke to donald trump this morning. you told me earlier he was in a good mood. so, what's up, and what about those surprises? >> i wasn't able to get any information from him about those surprises. but you're right, the former president definitely seemed eager to get to philadelphia, to get on this debate stage. of course, he's had more general election presidential debates than any other candidate in history. tonight will be one more. i asked him about the challenges he sees and he said the most difficult part about preparing for the debate, kamala harris, the idea, he said, of her changing policy positions, especially going back to 2019 or so when she was running for president. donald trump has plenty of changing policy positions of his own, but i think the way that trump campaign has chosen to handle this issue, based on my reporting, searches involve
