let me bring in nbc's john yang who is at the state police barracks in malone new york. john what can you tell us about what the scene is at this moment? >> right now, i can tell you that this area where they killed richard matt is being flooded with manpower right now. police state police new york federal officials, border customs and border patrol state forestry officers are flooding into that area right now. we've just been told by law enforcement officials there's been a second round of gunfire as they try to close in. they believe they may be closing in on david sweat. i can tell you, chris, that multiple law enforcement officials are telling nbc news that how this happened was that a customs and border patrol tactical team -- these are the people who patrol the borders along the canadian/u.s. border were doing a sweep when apparently they heard gunfire. they turned and the initial reports are -- and we have to stress these are initial reports. the initial reports are that richard matt raised a shotgun and aimed it at these customs and border patrol tactical team. w

let's go to john yang in morrisonville, new york.etails about the prison worker joyce mitchell. >> that's right, joyce mitchell the teacher in the tailor shop at the prison where both sweat and matt worked. you know we're here on the edge of the search scene, only about eight miles away from the prison. one reason why they think they didn't get varfar is senior government officials are telling nbc news that joyce mitchell has now told investigators that she was supposed to be the getaway driver when they popped up out of the manhole cover, but she chickened out and checked herself into a hospital that day with what investigators are telling us was a case of nerves. now, for her motivation investigators, the officials tell us that she has told investigators that she thought she was in love with one of the convicts, that she was charmed by him. this is richard matt the man who killed beat his former boss to death and dismembered him. we now have two sources that tell nbc news they expect to charge joyce mitchell. they just don't know w

how do you get power tools into a prison cell, john yang?, we talked to -- nbc news talked to a retired corrections officer here and they say employees go in and out of there with duffel bags and other things that are not searched. they don't go through metal detectors, their belongings aren't searched. so that is one possible route, but that is clearly one thing that investigators are looking into. as you know, they're interviewing a person of interest, joyce mitchell, a teacher in the tailor shop in the prison shop, where both inmates worked. nbc news is being told, they are still talking to her, she is still giving them information. chris? >> let me ask you about this distance traveled. i know if you do a compass and draw circles, you can find these guys anywhere in the world at this point. sir, it seems to me the distance traveled now is almost total, you could get to almost anywhere in the world in five days, if you get an airplane, or meet somewhere in canada, with all this time to think and their connections on cell phones, i wonder,

john yang joins me now from new york. john, it's just an incredible story. what's the latest on the investigation? >> reporter: it is incredible andrea. they are -- they say they developed about 150 leads as to the whereabouts of these two guys. tips they've gotten called in. but in spite of that they are no closer to figuring out where they are. that it don't know whether they're still together, whether they split up. this town is only 25 miles from the canadian border right on the vermont border. they don't know -- and also one of the escapees had previously escaped after a previous crime in the 1990s to mexico. so he spent time there. they've notified authorities in canada, in mexico in the southwest united states. but they say they are no closer to figuring out where they are. and they continue the investigation into how they did it. talking, as you heard governor cuomo say, looking first agencivilleagency ville agencivillian and contract employees. they are scouring the area. they don't know if they've hold up here, moved on. they have checkpoints aroun

joining me is nbc's john yang.rching in this relatively small area how close do you think they are at this point? >> reporter: well they're telling us they feel they're getting closer. as you see, it's a relatively small area south of the prison. it's been a week but instead of expanding in larger and larger circles, the focus remains here. they say they have no evidence that they've left the area even though there have been no confirmed sightings of these two guys here or anywhere else for that matter. meanwhile, joyce mitchell the prison worker is now behind bars. she's accused of smuggling in hack saw blades chisels, a punch and a screw driver drill bit that helped these guys escape. according to the charging document, she brought these in a full five weeks before the escape took place. she's accused of bringing in this contraband and aiding this escape. she could face up to eight years in prison. dara? >> john thank you so much for those details. we'll be following these developments all day long. that wraps up

joining me from upstate new york john yang. john explain why are authorities so focused on one particular area right now that happens to be so close to that clinton facility. >> well, i tell you, thomas there are a number of things. they narrowed the search down once they found out that joyce mitchell told investigators that she was supposed to be the getaway driver and never showed up. they knew they were on foot. there was a tip from this area from people who were living in the woods behind me about eight miles here away from dannemora where the prison is. five miles behind me is the search area. this is where they got a tip. they came with the searchers and with those blood hounds. the blood hounds picked up the scent. that made this the hottest pursuit here that they knew they were fresh, they were on a fresh track, and that's why all this focus now. there are 500 u.s. and state people in these woods looking. they're in the search area. there are officers lining the roads with rifles and assault weapons every 100 feet apart

>> john yang thank you very much. joining me now, nbc news correspondent stephanie gosk who is also in the area near malone, new york about 35 miles from the correctional facility from which the two men escaped. and stephanie, we spoke a little earlier. you had law enforcement flooding the area. it sounds like they're forming a perimeter and believe they're hot on the trail of david sweat. >> reporter: yeah well we have that report that there was this second gun battle that john yang was mentioning and we're not sure right now what the outcome of that was. but you know we are right now on route 30 in malone. and john was describing from law enforcement officials just exactly what went down with richard matt. well, they say that tactical team actually they were coming down on a sweep on this road when they heard gunfire at a campground, and they went to check it out, and that's when they came across richard matt. all of this today happened very very quickly, and there are only a few roads that lead into this hotspot ri

nbc's john yang. thank you. a former assistant special agent in rnlg cha of fbi, nypd joint terrorism task. you hear from john's reporting there about the fact that there was contraband brought in. they wouldn't be overly specific about what it was other than to say it wasn't the power tools. do you think that mitchell remains the linchpin to the break they need in this case? >> she's definitely an important piece. more and more information seems to come out every day, obviously. they're talking to her every day. it's been reported that they used her telephone to make calls. and she knows whatever this contraband is she sh we knows what she could have given them. power tool or plain old and tools. they were able to get out of the prison and what is not being reported that she might have given him a phone, money, who knows. there's a lot of other pieces that obviously the investigators are not going to say. they want to keep its ss close to the vest. >> day seven, who how are the odds in their favor now as the cl

john yang outside the clinton correctional facility. what is the latest? >> reporter: chris, they are looking at the possibility there was inside help, someone that worked in the prison helped them in this escape. also we have learned, these two prisoners were kept in the honor block where they have more privileges, their freedom to move around within the prison than other prisoners. meanwhile they say they have got about 300 tips as to where they are but they also admit they could be anymore. they really don't know where these guys are. they don't know if they left the state, are still in new york state or gone across the boarder to canada, about 25 miles to the north along that boarder by the way, u.s. customs and boarder patrol has introduced lanes to search cars as they leave the state, something they didn't do before and there is a heightened state of awareness according to officials up there. they also alerted officials in mexico because of one of the escaped had spend time in mexico after being extradited to face time in mexico. they are trying to f

joining me now to bring us the latest on the search is john yang. where this search stands right now, the last couple days seemed like we were hearing that it might be narrowing a little bit. dna found in cabins. where does it stand now as we hit day 20? >> reporter: they remain very focused on this area around that cabin where someone saw someone run out of the cabin and they found dna belonging to both of the escaped prisoners. and also they have no evidence that they moved on from this area. they still believe they're on foot. they don't believe they have left this area. so the focus remains here. the concern also is that they may have picked up weapons along the way and that they're now armed. as that search remains fairly narrowly focused, the investigation into the help they got inside the prison is widening. we know now this gene palmer, this prison guard, now charged with giving them access to that catwalk as early as november 2014. this means that they would have had a lot of time to come up with this idea, this plan. we also know that seve

joining me now with the latest on the search effort is john yang.ore information about where the inmates might be? >> reporter: well, alex i can tell you where they think they are. i mean investigators have been spending all day since dawn in the woods about three miles behind me. we're about eight miles away from where the presidenten is. they have been there all day long. last night there was a tip from that location and then blood hounds picked up the scent of one or both of the escaped convicts. now there are about 500 state and federal officers in that area going grid by grid, inch by inch as officials say, looking under every rock behind every tree. they've been doing it all day long, it takes time. that area is very heavily wooded. they have nothing, they have helicopters in the skies helping. so far they have nothing, they have gotten a lot of light stands delivered. so it could be a long night. alex? >> john yang thanks for that update. >>> prosecutors seek the death penalty for the man suspected in killing 12 people in a colorado movie the

. >> nbc's john yang is live outside the prison.n, give us the latest in the search for these men. >> reporter: well, reverend, the search is still going on. searching the farm land woods surrounding this village high in the decks not far from canada along the canadians boarder, the u.s. customs and boarder patrol set up lanes to check cars leaving the united states going into canada. they say there is a heightened awareness along the boarder and also notified officials in mexico because one of the two men who escaped spent some time in mexico before he was extradited to face trial that ended him up here in this prison. they are also trying to figure out just how this happened how they were able to get a hold of the tools to carry all this out, how they knew the steam tunnels and pipes underneath this prison, they are interviewing civilian workers, interviewing private contractors who do work in the prison all trying to find out where they are and how they got out, rev? >> how is the community, the surrounding community? how are the
