yeardley love's sister just walked back inside. and right behind here was george huguely's family and their defense team. they're all now sitting inside that courtroom, waiting to find out what is going to happen later tonight. the jury has been hard at work, deliberating for 8 1/2 hours, but still no verdict. >> reporter: george huguely walked into court for deliberation day. his fate hanging in the balance, wearing an oversized suit and pants, a drastic change in appearance for the once husky lacrosse player who has been locked up since may of 2010, accused of fatally beating his ex-girlfriend, yeardley love, from cockeysville. the last two weeks of dramatic testimony, tringered -- triggered a range of emotions. sadness from yeardley love's mother, who broke down many times. tension from other lacrosse players at uva who testified against their former teammate. and strong empathy from their prosecutor, dave chapman, who actually cried during closing arguments saturday. he wants jurors to convict huguely of first-degree or second-

he killed yeardley love. he murdered yeardley love. and as well as grand larceny. the jurors had the option of going down to voluntary manslaughter or involuntary manslaughter. they picked second-degree murder. >> bruce, let's talk a little bit about second-degree murder if people are just joining us. there's no need to establish premeditation, but there is to talk about malice. i saw one legal expert describe this as, you need hardness of heart that even if he didn't intend to kill her, he hurt her badly. the fact he didn't talk to anyone about what had happened with yeardley love and if i understand correctly, was alive for some time after that. did that play into this to some degree in finding this middle road, so to speak, verdict? >> reporter: yeah, it's hard to know. but that testimony was interesting and the prosecutor talked about it how after the murder, george huguely went back to his roommates, went back to his room and a bunch of his roommates were watching tv and drinking and he sat down there and one of them thought he was acting so strangely that he

he says that yeardley ran out crying hysterically, crying and screaming that she could not breathe. they insist that nothing he did to yeardley that night just before the uva graduation was violent enough to kill her. but the first officer who responded to a desperate 911 call from her roommate knew almost immediately that this was not an alcohol overdose. that her mouth was caked with dried blood, her right eye was bruised purple and swollen shut. >> how are you down, detective sergeant? >> i'm doing good. >> reporter: he told jurors that love was obviously the victim of some kind of violence. there was a large discolored area on the right side of her face that was an obvious abrasion on her neck and chin. the lawyers asked one of them if the cpr might have bruised her body. the medics say, well, he thought it was possible for cpr to bruce someone, but he had never seen it and he did not see it on yeardley love. now, one of the defense theories here is that yeardley died not from blunt-forced trauma, but from a fatal combination of pills and alcohol. but yeardley love's doctor was

that's yeardley's mother and yeardley's sister and they were very, very emotional. calling the loss of yeardley unbearable, a shock to the system. they said there are times when songs come on the radio that remind them of yeardley and break down into tears and the loss has been devastating for them. they did release a statement. we were told to hold that until after the sentencing. there is a podium set up over here. we anticipate that perhaps someone may come out. there is a gag order. we don't know if the judge is going to lift it. we don't know if we'll hear from the prosecution or the defense. but at this point, we are waiting to see if someone will come out. we are also, of course; going to try to talk to some of the jurors as they leave. at this point, to recap, 25 years in prison is the recommended sentence for the murder of yeardley love and one year for the grand larceny. brian. >> a couple questions. i think what a lot of people would wonder, the truth in sentencing here. 26 years, does that mean he does 26 years? >> reporter: you're absolutely right. ther

the father, family and friends of yeardley love walk into a courtroom seeking justice two years after the star lacrosse player was murdered. a case that put this small college town in headlines. more than 200 reporters are recovering the trial of george huguely, a fellow lacrosse player. huguely broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and beat to death. on street corners and cafes in charlottesville, the trial is the talk of the town. >> what are those opinions? >> just probably a little more concerned for their children. >> rick barrett is a spokesperson for the historic city. >> how has the murder of yeardley love and this trial affected this community? >> the university's been having conversations about domestic abuse and abuse situations and alcohol issues. and, and that has been very well-received. >> reporter: the mother of this college-bound student already did just that. >> do you think you use this as a teaching moment for your daughter? >> absolutely. >> did you learn something? >> yes, very much. >> saying all college campuses can take away a lesson from love. >> reporter:

prosecutors said george huguely and yeardley love had an abusive relationship and that he threatened to kill her two days before she was found dead at her charlottesville apartment in may of 2010. his lawyer says his client was very drunk the night yeardley love died and that he did not plot to kill her. >> under your man who ran a website posting threats against the creators of the tv show south park is expected to be in court today. jesse morgan is expected to plead guilty in federal court in alexandria -- jesse morton. he is accused of making threats after a 2010 episode of the show, the case of the moslem prophet muhammed in a bear suit. >> lawmakers pressing for a nasty battle over president obama policy on birth control. a religious schools and hospitals would provide health insurance that procoverage contraceptives. >> this has been a hot-button issue on the campaign trail and on the hill.

arguments which took most of the afternoon, a jury must now decide whether george huguely killed yeardley love on purpose, unintentionally, or not at all. before his fate was put into the hands of the jury, the defense called a surgeon who said in his opinion, yeardley love's brain did not have injuries consistent with blood force trauma. the defense rested. the commonwealth did not offer any rebuttal. the commonwealth's attorney began retelling the story that love was found dead. she made the decision to stay in her room while george huguely made the decision to go see her while he was drunk. they reminded the jury about the saidl that george huguely's that he should have killed her. the only possible explanation for her death was blunt force trauma. he said, the evidence clearly shows that glove was murdered during the commission of a robbery. -- that love was murdered during the commission of a robbery. the defense attorney reiterated that george huguely was in the apartment but there was no intent to kill. the jury will reconvene at they will have 37 different charges to go over inclu

the day after yeardley told love in an angry e-mail, i should have killed you. and the day before he is accused of attacking her. a total of five witnesses were called to the stand. two of them young women who testified seeing yeardley love and george huguely in an argument in the days leading up to the murder. one of them told the court she saw love strike huguely with her purse before the defendant asked love to leave. the defense called two other witnesses to testify about the value of love's laptop computer. as well as the condition of a wall inside her apartment. dr. michael woodhouse, an expert in biomechanics told the jury he examined a portion of yeardley's bedroom wall and determined it had not been struck with any type of force. prosecutors showed the jury a section of the wall where they believe love suffered blunt force trauma to the head. another witness, a computer expert, told the court he believes the value of yeardley love's computer at the time of her death was between $100 and $150. it's important to the defense because one of the charges agai

. >> an emotional month in court has ended tonight with yeardley love's family on the stand and jurors in tears. >> a case that shocked the university of virginia and the lacrosse world. >> guilty on three counts, in fact. the jury recommended george huguely be sent to prison for 26 years. >> a judge will finalize the sentence in april. tonight through a statement we're hearing for the first time from the love family. julie carey joins us live from charlottesville with more on the breaking news in this case. julie? >> reporter: well, that jury spent about two hours behind closed doors before announcing its sentencing decision. the jury has recommended that george huguely spend 26 years in prison for killing his fellow girlfriend yeardley love back in may of 2010. 25 years of that was back on the second degree murder conviction, one year for the grand larceny charge that relates to the stealing of yeardley love's laptop. george huguely showed little emotion at the sentencing. earlier in the evening he stood and crossed himself as he waited for the guilty verdicts to be read. at the end

the day after making this thought, yeardley love was found dead and huguely was arrested. more tough testimony for yeardley love's family and friends expect as rescue personnel broke down the crime scene in morning testimony. it was the first time that jurors got a graphic -- o look at some of the more graphic photographs. one gmt told the court about 25 minutes past from when he was instructed by suv medical center officials to stop resuscitation. a charlottesville detective took the stand and described more than half a dozen photos of her injuries to her face and body. the most revealing testimony came from michael burns, a lacrosse player who met yeardley love at the preakness in baltimore during their sophomore year. he said they hooked up from time to time, apparently while she was seeing george huguely. he testified that one time when he was visiting, he and a friend heard someone yelling for help in huguely's apartment. he said when they opened the door, they found huguely with his arm wrapped around love's neck, choking her. he then let her go and she ran out of th
