president yee: deputy superintendent. >> thank you, president yee. i wasn't quick enough to let you on on the national board certified, i think it would be important to recognize the fact that this past week assistant superintendent guerrero, myself and another person were at a grants summit where we were with other large school districts from across the country. what's stunning and absolutely precious about what we do in san francisco is that we were the only large urban school district that spoke about our reform efforts in positive terms, like having more and more teachers become nationally board certified as part of our strategic strategy for improving our school system. i have need to tell you that there were a number of our colleagues that were blown away by the fact that we've taken the positive approach in empowering our teachers, rather than some of the more draconian approaches out there. and i also want to congratulate and thank terry bergesen and the san francisco school alliance who made it possible for us to fund national board certifie

. >> commissioner yee riley. commissioner yee riley: thank you for the presentation. we are all interested on the 5,000 square foot waiver. my question is, is it limited to only commercial buildings and how do you come up with 5,000? what is the magic number? is it based on survey or some sort of study? >> it is. 5,000 was a number we came to pending, we hope, some survey. we do not have -- it literally is a number that we just arrived at through conversation. there is no magic data point. i can tell you that anecdote alley we wanted it large enough to accommodate a medium neighborhood sized grocer. we didn't want it so large that it would capture users that many would not consider small businesses or some might consider out of scale with neighborhood commercial districts. but, frankly, i'm here to learn from you and from the staff what the right number may ultimately be. so we're not wedded to the 5,000. it was a convenient number that seemed to capture a range of businesses, but we're hoping that through research we can find out, again, who has been affected and wha

linda yee is inside mobile5 on the bridge to show us exactly what the crews are going to be doing. >> reporter: hi there, allen. at 7:00, the highway patrol will begin shutting down all of the approaches to the westbound lanes so that by 8:00, all of these westbound lanes will be closed to traffic. that's because that's when the construction is going to begin. after this weekend, there will be a new temporary detour for westbound traffic just past the toll plaza. the current westbound lanes are in the path of the new bridge's eastbound lanes. caltrans spokesman bart ney explains how all the pieces of the new bridge construction will fit. >> last may, we put eastbound traffic coming into oakland on a new alignment and then over the past year, we have been widening what we call the incline, the part that takes you westbound on the bridge

senator yee wisely has proposed that we increase that by two years. the interesting thing here is that the examiner editorial has actually advocated for a longer time span. it is actually calling for a five-year time span that people have to wait before they go from being a commissioner on the puc to then turning around and working for the utilities that were regulated by the puc. i do not know if there has to be a future agenda item for us to take a position on it that, but i personally believe that, given the work that we have had the puc, weighing in on the importance of stopping this revolving door would be important for lafco to do. my preference would be to advocate for that five years that the examiner is asking for. i do not know what the process for that would be, but i think that it is important for us as lafco, one of the objectives of lafco is to promote good government

linda yee reports eight of the teacher's coworkers are under investigation. >> reporter: allen, tonight the school district worked quickly to get behind the story as soon as they heard that one of their teachers may have been hurting their special education preschoolers. the problem was they didn't hear it until the after the alleged abuse happened two months earlier. so now eight people have been put on suspension. special education preschoolteacher alexia bogdis is accused of slapping and kicking two of her 4-year-old students, one of them autistic. prosecutors say the abuse happened for months but no one reported it until last week. the redwood city school superintendent has now put eight employees on paid administrative leave for not following procedures. >> the internal investigation raised questions and the superintendent felt she needed more answers. so she initiated an independent investigation. >> reporter: the parents of one of the autistic boys says their child cannot express what's happening to him. they are angry none of the teachers aides spoke up. >> maybe the paterno sca
