our chief white house correspondent jessica yellin in chandler, arizona just outside phoenix. jess, tell us, curious looking at that map why these five states? >> reporter: well, first he's pushing his agenda which is two-fold. to grow jobs in the u.s. and to inoculate himself against anticipated attacks from the republicans. so he's focused on jobs, saying that he's promoting an energy agenda, and promoting skills in the u.s. and these states, 48, that's the number of electoral votes among them, john. three of the states are purple states that he won last time around. nevada, iowa, and colorado. one of them, michigan, is a blue state that he won. but because they suffered so badly in the recession he'll have to spend a lot of time there courting those voters again. they expect to do okay there, though, because of the auto bailout and how much the president's administration helped. but this is the state as you know that is a red state that democrats don't usually expect to compete well in and that this team, this campaign team, thinks they have a shot at because of the big lat

jessica yellin joins us now from chandler, arizona, where she's traveling with the president.task force in 2009 specifically to investigate and prosecute financial crimes. so is the creation of this new unit an acknowledgement that that task force wasn't very effective? >> anderson, it's an attempt to appease critics of the administration, liberal critics who have been outraged from the beginning of the administration that not a single high level executive has been jailed for blowing up the housing market and for abusive mortgage practices. it's an attempt to show his base some fight. so today, i spoke to one source who's in the know on all this. he said because of this new task force, you will now see charges brought by the end of this year. i spoke to another source who said really, well, what the heck has taken so long? only he didn't use the word heck, anderson. >> of course, it is an election year. probably no coincidence with that. eric schneiderman has been very critical of the administration dealing with big mortgage servicers. was his appointment intended to silence c

let's check in with jessica yellin.oesn't have an opponent, why does he think it's important to check in in iowa? >> reporter: well, in general, for the obama campaign, there's a sense that if mitt romney wins tonight they'll be curious to see by how much, john. the sources i talk to believe that mitt romney will be the eventual nominee, that's no secret. but what they want to know is, can he really deliver some kind of knockout punch tonight because he has invested a great deal of time -- not a great deal of time but a great deal of money here. he is the establishment candidate, if you will. he has said, and then walked back, that he believes he could win here. they clearly dedicated a commitment to iowa. and the obama team will be curious to see if he can capture a significant amount of the vote. and if he doesn't, no doubt expect them to say that this is a major loss for mitt romney, john. >> if you're president obama or political team, jess, what's their dream outcome for iowa tonight? >> reporter: i'd say that the

. >> our chief white house correspondent jessica yellin is live with her latest reporting on what we'll hear from the president tonight. let's start with policy proposals. anything new? >> you will hear a number of new policy proposals from the president as he tries to term the debate for the upcome election year. he will lay out new tax incentives for companies that "in source jobs" that's a term you've heard from him in the past. he's going to recall his rule for the buffett rule where millionaires should be paying a higher tax rate than those who make less. he'll propose more refinancing for homeowners in trouble. i also want to get to this, john. the white house has just released some excerpts from the state-of-the-union speech. i want to share some of this with you. this should sound familiar from that speech he gave in kansas earlier in december. he says "we can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well while a growing number of americans barely get by, or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share,

our chief white house correspondent jessica yellin has been working her sources and joins us more on emerging strategy. jess, one thing team obama has to be watching closely is all these attacks on mitt romney's tenure as ceo of bane capital. they came up in new hampshire. at least no evidence of impact there. what's the assessment of the obama team? >> well, my sources point to something you just said, john, which is that it came up in only the last 48 hours. and so they argue that that wasn't enough time to necessarily make a dent. maybe a convenient argument, but that's what they're saying. they believe that it will have a lasting impact on mitt romney going into the general election, and something that president obama can build on in the general election campaign. that said, it is important to note that mitt romney won among voters in new hampshire who considered the economy their most important issue. so we'll just have to see how effective newt gingrich's attacks on romney are in south carolina where he intends to go after him on his jobs record, john. >> and what's their take

our chief white house correspondent jessica yellin has been talking to the obama campaign about their role for the first lady. are we about to see michelle obama out on the stump? >> reporter: not yet, john. she has just opened a twitter account today and been holding a lot of fund raisers and she'll continue to do that. but her activity for the campaign will be limited for the time being to fundraisers, holding calls with supporters. she held a call with michigan women, for example, earlier this week. but beyond that we are not going to see her at major rallies and open campaign events for quite some time. she will be doing first lady events for the time being, john. >> but wait a minute. 2008 obama campaign was the social media campaign. he keeps his blackberry. why then finally get her on twitter? what's the point? >> reporter: excellent question. well, look. first of all, they're not going to openly campaign. neither of them is openly campaigning until the president or the first lady until there's a republican nom knee. there's just no point politically speaking. but when she's on

hardly your first trip to iowa, jessica yellin. mitt romney, could tonight be the night when the front-runner breaks through? >> reporter: well, brooke, i can't imagine anything short of romney absolutely crushing the rest of the field being a true break through for him. but winning here would give him real momentum. sources i've talked to are sort of asking reporters say why can't romney break 25% and if we were to get place number one here, i think that would give him the push he needs to start breaking 25% in some of the future contests. so that alone would be a major accomplishment for the romney team, brooke. >> okay. so breaking the 25% is breaking an accomplishment for them. what are you looking for tonight as you watch all of this? >> well, you know the old saying in iowa is that there are only three tickets out of town here. so everybody will be looking at who places among the first three finishers. and then going to what we were just talking about, what percentage of support they do get. and then it will also be interesti

do we have jessica yellin yet? all right. okay.s not easy to keep tuition down, as you well know, states' budgets are just getting slashed. education is gets the biggest wounds. >> well, i don't know that the reason why this tuition is going up is because the states' budgets are being slashed, but they are going up, because the schools are attempting to stay competitive so they have to build a bigger facility for whatever they think is important and particularly a sports facility and build better dorms that are more high-tech and make the students feel more like they are at home or better. these schools that i get to visit and i visit colleges all over the country, and there are colleges that i see that are stunning, but if you want to have a stunning college and stunning physical plant then you obviously have to spend more money, and that is where the rub is. the rub is that students on the one hand want the college that's the ooh/ah factor, but on the other hand don't have the money to pay for that. so that is what we run into. i
