to set off for yellowstone. they followed the river down to where it meets the gardener, but they really did only take horses and meals with them because they knew from reports that they weren't going to be able to get any wagons through any of the narrow canyons into yellowstone. so they really jumped off on july 20th, 1871 and spent a couple of months exploring the park here is a map you can see them at the very top of the map kind of coming down. along the yellowstone river making a diversion up the gardener a little ways where they saw for the first time the white what they called the white mountain, which we now call mammoth hot springs and langford's team has had not discovered this particular feature of yellowstone's grant geothermal basins and so hayden really considered that this was an iconic moment in his survey. he emphasized it a lot in all of his written reports because he wanted to claim it kind of as his own discovery, even though right at the base along the gardener river. they actually ran into

in june 2013, i visited yellowstone national park. another story is working on. one of those days i was able to visit the heart mountain interpretive center is a small museum sits with the former camp was her walk to the museum think i had a pretty good handle on the subject by griffin new yorkl which is roosevelt's hometown i said history in college, and i really thought this is a subject and a a history, these camps i understand really well. as i walked to the museum i under stoodor i knew about 1% of the amount of information i should know about these. i knew nothing about the camp conditions, the racism on the government's decision to form these camps with the brave men and women resisted these camps both before they opened it within the camps. while i was walking through and thinking about how in-depth my education in history was on thev subject, i saw one display in the museum and i still think this time today was the only time of the first time all thatt up to the very end of the museum display for that something i've changed since then i got a whole book

but you've been covering up yellowstone for many years on what strikes you most about the country today. what i really find hard to come to terms with is that on the one side, there is without a doubt increased security. i myself am the last couple of years i was here. i couldn't walk the streets out of fear of suicide attacks or battles interrupting just like that because frontiers were so unclear and now you can walk the street searing, cobbled there. i tell you bon checkpoints every, a few 100 meters and so, and you really do get checked, you have to show your papers. but the sense of security doesn't really transform to a better life for people. that economic crisis is all encompassing and fear in insecurity. really have a firm hold of people and a lot of women that we spoke to, especially women, really want to leave the country. i can still try. i can still remember one teacher who re tried almost on my shoulders, saying she finds it so hard to tell her as students that they cannot come back to school and without schooling, there is no future for them in this country. chandler, tha
