explosions) (air raid siren wails in distance) (explosions continue) fighters fight a brush fire on yerba buena island next to the bay bridge, both by land and by sea. the location, terrain and winds all made it challenging for crews to get the upper hand. >> the hydrants are on the north side of the bridge. the fire was on the south side, and there's only one way to get our hoses across and unfortunately we had to inconvenience everyone to stop this fire where we did. >> at one point, the eastbound portion of the bridge was completely shut down for more than an hour, backing up traffic for miles. good evening. on this saturday, i'm cristina rendon. firefighters were called to yerba buena island after drivers on the bay bridge reported smoke at about 230 this afternoon. the brush fire broke out on the island just south of the bridge. crews working using fireboats in their work against the flames, and the fire department says crews on the ground had to break through a fence to access fire hydrants on the north side of the bridge and run a hose across interstate 80. that's why all eastbound lanes

these include federal, state and grant funding for projects such as yerba buena projects. it's expected to increase by $3 million and increase regional funding for the various yerba island projects. total spen deur are projected to be $22,066,000. this is sab increase of $16.7 million. capital project costs are $228 million. most of these are awarded to grants such as sfmta. costs are budgeted to increase by 13 million-dollar and due to the program, capital expenditures related to the yerba buena suite of projects mentioned earlier. administrative costs are personnel and non-personnel expenditures. we're at similar levels including salaries, legal and it expenditures. we're including a budget of 42 full-time positions to support the program. we're budgeting a debt service cost of $25 million and this is an increase from our fiscal year 2024 amended budget. by $3.2 million. this includes fees and interest payments related to the credit lone agreement as low as scheduled bond principle payment of $15 million. current reinvolving loan agreement will expire in october of 2024 a

it has been cool to introduce yerba buena to yerba buena. this plant is called dutchman's pipe.om, the flower looks like a dutchman's pipe. and another thing that's unique about this plant is, it's the whole specific plant for the pipeline swallow tail butterfly. so some butterflies are able to adapt to other species and can use larva and food from different species. in the county of san francisco, there's only about three or four healthy populations of this plant. these particular plants were going to be destroyed because of the green infrastructure project needed to put pipes in and needed to demolish all water tanks and build new water tanks for the island, so we were able to go in, dig them up, cultivate them, extrapolate dozens of plants into hund hundreds of plants and restore it through the restoration process. one day one of my nursery managers was down here and she found the pipeline butterfly have flown over from yerba buena island and came to our nursery on treasure island and was breeding on this plant. and successfully did its life cycle inside of our nursery. so, i

this started around 9 a.m. when a semi truck caught fire on westbound 80 going into the city near yerba buena island lanes were closed as crews continued to clean up the debris. you see the flames there? take a look at the traffic backup here. this is what it caused our sky ranger over the scene. this was a few hours ago. all lanes finally reopened about 90 minutes ago and traffic is starting to get back to normal. there's also an issue in the south bay after a deadly crash on 101, a car crashed into a big rig near the blossom hill near the blossom road exit. this was around 11 a.m. the driver of the car was killed. one lane remains closed this evening. there could be delays for several more hours. again southbound 101, because the crash also caused a fuel spill. so what about the rest of our roads? here's a live look now at some of our cameras around the bay area. you see, san mateo county, the san mateo bridge, looking really good there. san rafael in the north bay looking good as well. and emeryville, okay. again, we talked about that traffic going into the city on the bay bridge, 44 milli

first responders on sunday will be on site testing the new yerba buena island tunnel fire sprinkler system from five in the morning until noon. two lanes will remain open. caltrans is urging drivers using the bridge to allow for extra time. more than 1200 volunteers are working on san jose's newest piece of public art this week. it's called threads woven, and it's a massive mural near san pedro square. the artist jimmy paints said the inspiration was a serape blanket and the diversity of san jose. hundreds of volunteers are scheduled each day to paint the mural. earlier this year, city officials decided to keep this section of the street closed to traffic and local businesses hope this mural will be a draw. >> i think the hope with any public art piece is to enhance the connection between people and place. and so when we do a piece like this, we're able to have people come out and connect to this place and connect to each other in really unique and interesting ways. >> volunteers will be out working from 9 to 7 each day. they expect to have the mural completed by friday. san francisco is a

got on scene just east of the yerba buena island tunnel. the trailer was filled with produce. thankfully, no one was hurt. the exact cause of the fire is unknown, but the fire department says the trailer's rear brakes may have overheated and in the south bay, two southbound lanes of 101 were blocked and will stay that way into the night. after a deadly crash. it happened just before noon north of blossom hill road. chp says a wrong-way driver collided with a big rig. the driver of the wrong-way car died at the scene. the big rig driver was not hurt. the crash caused about 100 gallons of fuel to spill into the road. and just about an hour and a half ago, chp began its maximum enforcement period for the holiday weekend. it will last through late monday night. you can expect more officers to be out on patrol. they'll be looking for drunk or distracted drivers, speeding and any other reckless behaviors and for those not hitting the roads, many will be flying this holiday weekend. this is what it looked like at san francisco bay oakland international airport. as you can see, travel
