urban development services ymca. first of all, let me thank you for your continued interest and support of the truancy assessment and referral center. we have been working since january to come up with a comprehensive strategy and plan and have actually begun to launch a pilot that my colleague, the director of the tarc center, will give you more details about. we have worked collaborative with the school district, the police department, the youth program urban services, ymca, juvenile probation, and the d a's office to develop a pilot that was launched late april through the end of the school year, and we targeted this pilot with two communities that contributed most to the chronic and habitual truant to population, and that was in bayview and the western addition, so with the baby station and the northern station in particular, and we then went out and did a lot of outreach to all the roll calls for both of the stations and talked with police officers. we have done outreach to the community resource centers, with a

we're at the ymca here in downtown oakland. we ran inside a minute ago, and there's already a good-sized crowd downstairs in the gym donating blood to lela klein, a 2-year-old girl. and some of these people know her, some of them don't. but here with me this morning is lee rostine. good morning. can you tell us what her story is and why people should come out and help. >> last june, leyla, a 2-year-old oakland toddler, always been hale, happy, spirited little girl, her parents brought her in. she had a lump on her neck. thought it was probably nothing. turned out to be stage four neuroblasatoma, a rare form of pediatric cancer. so she's been in intensive, year-long treatment process right now that involves six rounds of chemo, radiation, bone marrow transplant, surgery, and other rounds of medical treatments, all of them involve a lot of blood transfusions that she needs. so we put together this blood drive so that the community here at the downtown oakland ymca and oakland in general could help her and contribute towards makin

parts of this is with urban services and the ymca. we do human service, and we'll be doing assessments of young people once the police of buses bring them in, or parents can bring them in, where you can refer them to come to our center, as well. this is an example of some of the art work and we hope we can adorn in some of your businesses. valerie is our marketing consultants, who is helping us to put together these concepts, so this may be the poster that we have asked merchants to a door in their store, too, again, as she said, to encourage people to stay in school, and if they need resources to go back to school, to refer them to the center. if not the posters, she has also helped us to develop a sticker that may be along side your visa-mastercard. this is to support the arts and their education. we would like to come back and provide more information, or we look forward to meeting with you to find out how we might incorporate small businesses and to our campaign to get the word out to young people and their families to further the

they have been teaching dance at the chinatown ymca and other clubs in the chinatown area since they five years ago, they began volunteering to teach ballroom dancing at the golden gate park for the senior center. they are extremely energetic and engaged in a wide variety of dancers and styles. this couple is a grid example of how when you give a little, you get a lot. we celebrate their an outstanding work and achievement and we thank them for their dedication to improving the lives of so many. and the bay area through our own consideration, the boys and girls club, rhythm and blues c.y.o., ymcaetc. what the kids in san francisco are literally crying out for is quality playing fields. two years ago our own organization was at a crossroads. we were on the verge of dying. so we took an enormous leap of faith and developed 15 acres of derelict lands that was a blight on the island of treasure island and convert it into 15 acres of pristine athletic fields at zero cost to the city of san francisco. but with an estimated cost to our own organization of $5 million. these fields have been enormous benefit to the kids of san francisco and the bay area. and indeed the disadvantaged kids on the island. in collaboration with tida and the city of san francisco we also pose add 10,000 square foot playing structures for the kids on the island. the fields have been the size of several -- site of several local regional international tournaments which has resulted in millions of dollars of revenue to the city of san francisco. in view of the enormous voluntary human and financial investment w
