i'm the president and ceo of the ymca of san francisco. other than the san francisco public schools, the ymca touches the lives of more children than any other year outstanding is grounded in the fact that we are rooted in the communities. i would like to say categorically that the legislation that we are addressing today is both scientifically accurate and socially irresponsible. i think it takes a lot of courage to be able to stand up in the wake of so many pressures to raise children in our culture and in our society today. our children in the bayview- hunters point, the mission, and throughout our city are facing almost insurmountable obstacles in facing a good, healthy environment. we deal in schools in san francisco. we are in 50 of the schools in san francisco. 40% of the schools in san francisco, our standing to speak on behalf of children is substantial. the development of early eating habits predict how wife will support itself through good evening and good attrition, and as kids understand that early in their lives and are educa

you have the ymca was created 130 years ago to improve relationships between what was then called the american protestant religions, by having young men and young women -- of course, it was separate at the time, ymca, ywca, come and bond by doing sports together and other programs together. it's been a worldwide phenomenon. the 92nd street "y" was the first attempt by the jewish community to create also a center where you would create this kind of bonding. we are now, today, where the jewish community and the catholic community was maybe 70 years ago, a century ago. and this is our time and our turn to do that. a christian friend of mine once said, you know, i have no reason to go to a synagogue. by going to the 92nd street "y" and by doing its programs, i've learned far more about jewish culture. gotten to make many jewish friends. and it has opened my eyes to many things. >> there have been -- >> -- so we need to do something like this because the need today is to build those types of relationships. to forge those bonds that would help us create an atmosphere of peace. >> but doesn'

parts of this is with urban services and the ymca. we do human service, and we'll be doing assessments of young people once the police of buses bring them in, or parents can bring them in, where you can refer them to come to our center, as well. this is an example of some of the art work and we hope we can adorn in some of your businesses. valerie is our marketing consultants, who is helping us to put together these concepts, so this may be the poster that we have asked merchants to a door in their store, too, again, as she said, to encourage people to stay in school, and if they need resources to go back to school, to refer them to the center. if not the posters, she has also helped us to develop a sticker that may be along side your visa-mastercard. this is to support the arts and their education. we would like to come back and provide more information, or we look forward to meeting with you to find out how we might incorporate small businesses and to our campaign to get the word out to young people and their families to further the

they partnered with buchanan ymca to create "the heat of the kitchen" schools who work partnership. and that will involve 120 students per year called the culinary arts and about 40 of the students will be placed into short-term paid shadows and internships in the hospitality business. another downtown high is to be working with jewish services. the plan is to take about 25 students from downtown high school that has attendance issues. perhaps have low testing skills. 25 of the probably most challenging and disengaged students from downtown high school and engage them into a variety of occupations with various partner, employers. another is with o connelly. we've had a partnership with bill s.f. building on this success that they've had over the years. now these are all kind of programs that were in developing right now. to be implemented in january. but with the principal center collaborative and y-tech, we do have the big picture program which actually has been up and running for the past six weeks and we brought the principal to actually tell you what's happening at an actual sig

i know we are meeting with the hunters point foundation, with the ymca, with all of these organizations. we are trying to get started first. we are supposed to have sort of a brainstorming session with some of the community-based organizations this week. i am, at least. >> we are about four weeks from the school year. this summer, most of it was spent on the streets. elements of this presentation -- we have been in dialogue the least in this last week with dozens of groups of parents, many of which have been enrolled in specifically the kinds of parent leadership institutes and groups that i am hoping will begin to form the troops of folks that will be engaged in our schools, having a clear understanding of what our reform effort is about. a lot of what is here on the slides were not on slides at the time when i got to rehearse it tonight. i have been hearing their concerns. a lot of what you are seeing here is based on some of what they have voiced. there are other voices that still remain to be heard as well. our community and neighborhood organizations and neighborhood agencies, many

and the bay area through our own consideration, the boys and girls club, rhythm and blues c.y.o., ymcaetc. what the kids in san francisco are literally crying out for is quality playing fields. two years ago our own organization was at a crossroads. we were on the verge of dying. so we took an enormous leap of faith and developed 15 acres of derelict lands that was a blight on the island of treasure island and convert it into 15 acres of pristine athletic fields at zero cost to the city of san francisco. but with an estimated cost to our own organization of $5 million. these fields have been enormous benefit to the kids of san francisco and the bay area. and indeed the disadvantaged kids on the island. in collaboration with tida and the city of san francisco we also pose add 10,000 square foot playing structures for the kids on the island. the fields have been the size of several -- site of several local regional international tournaments which has resulted in millions of dollars of revenue to the city of san francisco. in view of the enormous voluntary human and financial investment w
