my father was the director of ymca in chicago and so with that civic engagement through ymca, i think that all was in one variable or another very influential to me. >> where do you place yourself on the political spectrum now? >> with regard to? >> well, i know founded the green party in the '90's. >> i did. my feeling is that in college, especially during the reagan administration, i thought that the democratic party in the united states had essentially vacated the left. and fused i think a little too much with the political right. there had n. my opinion, been insufficient advocacy for people who were left of center. and so that reality, coupled with the fact of the growing environmental crisis and denial that this country was going through and in seeing the inspirational movement of the green party's blossoming in europe, especially germany, i went to germany in the late 1980's. i spent time with the green party of germany in the parliament over there, learned everything i possibly could. came back to california. i was 1 of 20 people who co-founded the green party here in californ

crop or the bottom was wiped out the of urban renewal and replaced with civic centers, hotels, the ymca, state government buildings, the state to our. applause of shops. you know, the vision was that this would be kind of a pedestrian mall that you could walk in shop and what not. we've are standing on the corner of the grounds of the old state capitol in frankfurt. right across the street from the old state capital is really where "crawfish bottom" began, which is interesting that you have the state legislature right across the streets from what was considered the bad part of town. it was considered the neglected part of town. and you are a stone's throw away from where laws were happening. but it was actually about 50 acres that was taken out by urban renewal. and so there are a lot of questions, even with people who lived there that could not really give a consistent answer as to exactly what blocks and streets made up the neighborhood, which is kind of the fun of it. to hear them talk about these sort of shifting boundaries of this neighborhood and what you considered to be crossed.

the ymca down the block will be 174 new studio units, 100% linked with the health department. we will be referring homeless clients with health issues into that project. we will decoupling it with an 11,000-square-foot health center on the ground floor. so for me, this is an extremely innovative project. tndc is a great partner on it. so with that, congratulations to tndc, and good luck on all of our future collaborations. thank you. we do that with the school district, the boys club and the ymca. the connection is the important thing. without the connection and listening relationship, there is no trust. that's what we strive to build. >> thank you. did you want to add something, angela? >> yes, i did, i had a couple of action items. i think this is a good time to add. to officer parillo. there's a lot of great programs. i noticed these programs are sporadic. there's a couple at this school and this school. maybe a year, 2 years. there's maybe one program. not that many programs that we invest in long term. i was looking at this the other day with the contents. if you look at the back. there's a charter of the usfd. violence prevention chart. the most important part for me is the school wide behavior program. what's been found to be the best way to prevent violence is have a school wide program. it has to be embedded in your curriculum. the different ways you create different rules in class and how do deal with that. there's an entire school investment that has to be involved i

we have ymca's, we have tennis clubs, we have a lot of recreation facilities. some of them are nonprofit, some of them are for profit, that provide a real resource in the city and some of those have been telling staff that you really need to step back and have policies that deal with those facilitieses. we deal with housing and housing is all privately owned and why can't we put something more than rec park, something substantive. and you need to have guidance in this element on how you evaluate projects that affect recreation and sometimes open space that is on private property that is not on city property and i don't think you have that. and i ask you to go back and read this and i will read it as well. and say that the controversy that bubbled up over the past five, six years that most of you have been on the commission, and what tools does this give you to evaluate them? i don't think -- i think it is lacking. it's okay to avoid, it's human nature to avoid hot issues, but you need guidance and this is supposed to be a guidance document. i was involved when
