the ymca movement, we think of that ♪ ymca but that was a global movement among men and it was evangelicalovement that went around the world. and people as diverse as dr. mays, and many other people who are in the annals of history, a whole host of people used the ymca movement to go around the world and to interact. the ways that dr. mays met ghandi, he was going to india on the international ymca movement. this allowed the freedom to go and travel. now, i want to put this a little bit quick context, india, south africa was still under british imperialism and one of the ways you could go was to say you had religious duties to do, or to carry out and mays travelled under that us auspices so he could meet leaders. in 1937, mays went to india but travelled through what we now call the middle east or the near-east, however one wants to geographically put this. this opened up a huge world to him. one, he interviewed gandhi for 90 minutes, he wrote about extensively in newspapers, and secondly, he also was traveling because he understood that christianity was a global religion itself. christian

of the bayview hunters point ymca. be part of the swearing-in ceremony for district attorney gascon. in my years of experience working in the community, i know that the most effective way to prevent crime is to invest in our city's young people now. most people think of the d.a.'s office as strictly a prosecutorial agency. i would like to convey today is that the d.a.'s office is so much more. for the last two years, the d.a.'s office has provided critical funding for the bayview hunters point ymca's center for academic re-entertry and empowerment, a truancy project in the form of a school that helps teens get back on track to finish their education. 35 youths have graduated from high school. note, a majority of these youths have been out of school for two years. over the past 2 1/2 years, we served over 500 youth with 70% getting put back on track towards graduation. we are very excited this past summer when 10 care students got to participate in an internship program through the d.a.'s office where they experienced t

i know the ymca, the boys and girls clubs, other agencies in the community that have been in the trenches. they were struggling with this concept called the digital divide. we had to address that for our communities, for places where people might feel they would be displaced. how can they be a part of it? and we wanted to be a city for the 100%, for everyone to participate. the technology industry is that opportunity. s.f. citi is our ability to take stakeholders, companies who want to be here, the 85-plus and continuing to grow, to get their talent and employment opportunities they have and to share it with everybody, train them. we do not create jobs for people by simply announcing an idea. we have to roll up our sleeves and go to work. this is what i meant when i said, let's get it done. we need the right curriculum. we have to have the industry engage with us. what skill sets to are they going to look at when they are hiring people? how can we bridge the gap with folks who have felt they have been left out of this digital divide? this training idea, employment training, is to get that
