. >> reporter: they hit mostly gyms in south san jose but their scheme began to unravel at this ymca. elizabeth jorgen of the ymca says when a van was stolen, workers quickly connected the theft to two men who reacted strangely. they looked at their surveillance video and warned other ymcas in the area. >> the cameras are high resolution so we can catch facial features. >> reporter: when the men showed up, workers knew who they were right away and scared them off. >> fantastic video and we're able to pick up the investigation with that video. >> reporter: that's when san jose police sergeant ken davis says they noticed a spike. the suspect's m.o. one man would distract workers while the others with break in to lockers steal car keys and steal the car in the parking lot. they had no idea investigators all over the south bay were looking for them. >> our task force is comprised of detectives throughout the entire county. >> reporter: sergeant davis is part of the regional auto theft task force which is why we can't show his face. he said it took one investigator who recognized the suspe

and the ymca will be giving away free swim lessons. the trouble is not all these kids know how to swim. drowning is the number one cause of death for kids ages 1 to 4. and the second leading cause of death for kids under 14. so later this morning, the ymca is giving a i way 300 swim lessons to a local elementary school. it's the first time they've done something like this. i've been looking at the stats this morning and most of the drownings happen at home swimming pools. just because you take them to a public pool does not make them 100% safe. >> you want to take your children swimming in a pool with a life guard? you p don't want to ever take your eyes off the child. that doesn't mean that something may not happen. there's no such thing as drown proofing. all we can do is try to make them safer. >> and the folks here are hoping that the swim lessons will help. why are some kids not learning how to swim? what some parents are willing to do to stay as far away from the water as possible. i'll have that at 5:15. for now live in the neig

they shared that video with other ymcas and sure enough the two men allegedly walked in to a ymca but the workers recognized them. they scared them off then they called police. once that case was in the hands of investigators, they were able to do a lot of detective work, arrest three people, recover five cars and they say it's because of hose alert ymca workers that they were able to solve this case. here's what sergeant and ymc member had to say. >> without the y it would have been really difficult andry probably would have been looking for some of the individuals. >> so little did the suspects know that investigators county-wide were looking for them. the reason why we can't show you the sergeant's face is because he's undercover for the regional auto theft task force but they say this case is far from over. they believe there are more suspects out there. maria medina, kpix 5. >>> we got word today ellen powell will appeal the verdict in her gender discrimination lawsuit against a powerful silicon valley venture capital firm. a san francisco jury cleared perkins of any claims. the
