go back to new york city. there was no way i was supposed to win the race, but it would give me good exposure to figure out what i wanted to do next and get to know the right people in new york city for a job in public relations. once you go out there and start to meet the people and shake hands, once you start to figure out that maybe i can actually do this and fix problems, you become so convinced that you have to win. i ran for the new york city council when my dad decided to borough president. mayor giuliani asked him to run to increase participation of the public on staten island. my mother was diagnosed not that long before that with a muscle disease. it was wearing on my dad to be away from home. he ran for borough president and won, which left open his congressional seat. and this was always a dream come true for me after watching him and following him, following the discussion and debates, to have an opportunity to serve in the u.s. house of representatives was about the highest honor i could think of

legislation that is still very relevant today in new york city, in new york state he played a significant -- -- state. he played significant roles in expanding the city's recycling program and advocating for a memorandum of understanding among the city, the state and upstate communities to protect the city's water shed in the mountains. after years of public service, and a long fight against cancer, stanley passed away in 2008. but his legacy will not be forgotten. it is my honor to see a post office named in his honor. stanley michels and his family pour their hearts into making new york city a better place for all of us to live in. this included his wife, molly michels, his sister, ellen grant, his son, jeffrey, and his two daughters, karen and sherry michels, who is now a new york city civil court judge. and three grandchildren, stanley michels left a tremendous legacy and he made a difference. naming this post office after stanley michels is a fitting tribute to honor his memory and all of his contributions to new york city. i am proud to have sponsored this bill and look forward to c
