-- to yorktown. and yet, these men and their equipment had together somehow because if nobody shows up, there is no battle. did they take? how long did it take them to get to yorktown? what are the experiences along the way? what are their observations? what did they consider worth recording? theird they interpret experiences? what did they eat? those are questions that have hardly been asked, and this is, of course, where the washington-rochambeau revolutionary route comes in. i don't want to bore you with the details of how this road came about. suffice it to say that it was -- 1999gan in december of in connecticut as a private project and ended when president obama signed house resolution 11111.eating public law the 29th national historic trail with the national park system. in marchis happened 2009. what is the washington-rochambeau revolutionary route? it is the story of the movements of the cardinal armie and the french. it is the story of human interaction between americans and french soldiers

it is the march 2 yorktown. -- to yorktown. ittalks about troops, but also talks about encounters between american and french. it talks about encounters about and germanuenots immigrants and black slaves. they talked about the educational experience that french officers have, but also the educational expenses the americans have, --experiences the americans have, because we know who we are by who are what we are. this is the first time that americans in great numbers actually encountered frenchman. -- frenchmen. but they are human beings and they are now our allies. in other words, it is for the process of finding ourselves. this is an important step in this process, as well. with this, i'd better stop. i thank you very much for wasting a privately good hour with -- a perfectly good hour with me. we'll have some question. thank you much. very important to start with the story of yorktown. one of the other pieces of the story i would like to expand on is what happened after the was over,yorktown when washington recovered 5000 or 6000 african-american slaves with the british that day during the battle. these included 17 people from mount vernon, washington's own dozen from and two jefferson's plantation. you make sure they were returned as property that belonged to people in the state. of the storyide that is important to understand and the side of the story that gets left out of schoolbooks and is all too important to understand these days. let's go back to that moment in philadelphia, when washington is standing around in a blue uniform, and work comes down in april, 1775, congress had who had beeniamen fighting the british. they are going to become the first continental army. riflemene a company of from a few other states so this would be a truly united states army. the question is, who is going to take command? washington certainly had his own ambitions and ideas in

"from january 15 1781 until may 25 when i arrived in lebanon, connecticut, i wasn't a single week in one place. i crossed new england, the continent, new york, the jerseys, pennsylvania, maryland, and virginia." he rejoined the army at the end of june. at the moment, it was not clear where the army was headed. he says "the entire army was ignorant of the mission. some said we were going to cross the north river, reaching the jerseys and then south to capture staten island." as the army passed through new jersey, it became clear the goal is yorktown. he described the route where they traveled by sea to annapolis after pennsylvania. in his journal, the other general kept a record of the trip across the atlantic from france to america and documented the arrival at newport and subsequent march the yorktown. the journal does not mention the siege at yorktown, the picks up again as the french troops march northward in 1782. his style is more technical. he records the weather during a crossi
