a raging wildfire is threatening a community near yosemite national park.ports. >> reporter: we are expecting an update at 7 a.m. the fire destroyed 50 homes at last count and 49 other smaller buildings. it is only 10% contained as of now. the latest destruction is near mariposa. the fire started on sunday and then blew up over the last few days. it's burned 109 square miles. it's littered with dead trees that have been killed by bark beetles and, of course, years of drought. that makes it prime fire fuel. the fire started about 2 miles east of lake mcclure. flames jumped the merced river and several retardant lines and roads. it's threatening about 1500 homes and other buildings. nearly 5,000 people have been evacuated. but some are staying put watching the conditions including those at a hospital in mariposa. >> our first concern is the health and well-being of our patients. and to move them from this facility, um, puts added stress on them. the experts here said that our best option is to stay in place. >> and with the weekend upon us, many people who we

with the weekend upon us, many other people planning to head to yosemite be changing their plans. highway 140 is still closed. so getting into the park from the west gate is tough and then inside the park, the winds are shrouding some of the vistas in smoke. the governor has declared a state of emergency for mariposa county because the fire has already damaged power, water and communication infrastructure. that declaration will mobilize the california national guard to help with disaster relief. >>> a teenager is behind bars for allegedly starting the stagecoach fire. it led to evacuation orders for an auburn neighborhood. police say the boy was smoking marijuana when the grass fire started. the boy reported the fire. he is cooperating with the arson investigators according to authorities. cal fire was able to contain the fire which left a massive 12-acre burn scar in the canyon. >>> this morning, pittsburg police are on the hunt for a gunman. larry kneel, jr., is wanted in connection with to a deadly shooting. they say he knew the victim. the shooting was wednesday afternoon at b

winds are pushing the blaze south right now, which is away from yosemite. all day today, firefighters will be dealing with more heat and wind, and for more on that let's go to roberta. >>> thank you very much, katie. and it's certainly not good news for firefighting efforts. let's get to it because although we are seeing a northwest flow of wind in throughout the san francisco bay area, the light surface winds are pushing the smoke towards mariposa. i was getting reports from the sacramento, stockton area yesterday as well as the high sierra, with haze in the atmosphere due to the smoke. today's forecast calls for sunny skies, hot and dry at 94 degrees. but meanwhile, we're looking at our upper-level winds and that's what carries that smoke into nevada and as far away as idaho. we'll have poor air quality in and around the greater lake tahoe area. this includes yosemite and then again lifting all the way into the sacramento valley. we'll continue to monitor the weather forecast for not only the san francisco bay area, but mariposa and yosemite. michelle? >>

i want to get you a look here at yosemite and half dome. this is a live view from weather underground. the half dome is 8,839 feet high, but you can't see any bit of it as it's all obscured by this haze. so it just goes to show i how thick the smoke is across california. not only the smoke there but very hot temperatures today that were in the mid-90s. right now we've seen temperatures backing off. y currently 88. firefighters dealing with winds at 15 miles per hour, but by 1:00 a.m., we should see 60s, and that will give us a little overnight recovery. back here at home, we have had warm temperatures across the bay area today. concord got up to 91 degree, but thankfully no 100s as that fog has helped keep us out of the triple digits. more comfortable weather moving back in once we hit 11:00 p.m. tomorrow i don't see any huge jumps in temperature, 92 in concord, 88 in napa, oakland, 74, pal lo alto 91. you can see in the extended forecast, 97 expected inland. the we've pushed up the forecast to 98 zinsunday. t with the hot weather ahead, if

"today in the bay's" bob redell. bob? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, sam and kris. the most recent construction accident here at facebook's menlo park campus involved a construction worker. as you can see in these photos released you can see that he was working on the fourth floor, the roof of facebook's 21 building when, according to firefighters, a piece of steel or decking became dislodged. the worker lost his footing and fell about 10 to 15 feet. fortunately he was wearing safety rigging which prevented him are from hitting the floor below but was still hurt by the quick stop and had to be taken to the hospital. the fire department tells us this worker's name is menlo quint who lives in menlo park. in late april two other workers fell are from
