we went out yosemite valley. i took, in the view of point, i don't know if we have images of if we're queuing up images today or not but anyway you probably know that view of inspiration point where you look out and you see a bridal fall on the right and el capitan on the left and true to its name, it inspired me and i knew that i wanted to spend time there and. then as i was at the history of the and and how it came to be, you know, one of our great national landscapes, i'd discovered that john muir was, the person who embodied the yosemite valley story. so he was also inspired i know from reading your book by yosemite valley, you have a reading about that. you want to tell us about his experience. sure. you know, encountering it. so i i first experienced it as many people do through that gorgeous view from inspiration point. muir went there, first of all, in 1868. he walked there from san francisco and went into the valley in winter. there it was very snowy. there were bears. people said he might make it out al

here's yosemite valley. and if we take a look at a fly through to give us a three dimensional perspective on what it looks like right now -- and we're going to go to google earth for that. you're going to see a real unique perspective of yosemite valley that will show us the whole thing's pretty much a floodplain. as we take that google earth fly through, you'll see that the floodplain is going to be putting water out into the valley at a level that's likely going to reach the level of the roads. that's where we've still got about six feet of standing water in the high country. but when we come in for a close-up look of yosemite down here -- of course, you recognize el captain, but once you get farther into this valley and see the long, expansive meadows and look at it from this perspective, you can see this is all a floodplain. the merced river through the middle of it, see the edge there, that's southside drive. they closed the camp grournds now because that river's hitting a stage that's about ten feet hi

really one of the hugest of that epic winter rolling quite over yosemite. it was almost like a flash flood bursting through the merced river. this -- obviously this slow-release snowpack flood is lower but still a flood. think about it. the snowpack that exists in the mountains right now is large enough to charge this river like a gigantic atmospheric rubber. like that thing that came to an '17. maybe not quite as much water, but still a ton to push up to the waterline. just over my shoulder here, this is the 1997 flood marker sign. there is flooding and there is a real flood. back in '17, they rippled this park to get the infrastructure away from these more routine events. you know? snow runoff and a big storm system. they are better prepared for flooding after that '97 flood. but there are parts that are close to the river and they have shut down for now. >> you have taken us there in your report. i hope you get to stay the night. is that on the company tabard you have to drive back? >> i am about to drive home. >> thank you for your report. see you tomor

the water is rising in several parts of yosemite. some of the campgrounds there at yosemite and sections of the valley floor will be closed through this weekend. there's also no rafting or boating allowed. here's one example why. last weekend, someone who fell off an inner tube was found clinging to a tree in the water. thankfully, some park rangers saw that person and pulled the person off. >>> a section of road in the north bay taken out by a landslide won't be fully fixed until september. this is redwood road in novato. it's been closed since march, damaged during our series of storms. the slide took out a 100-foot stretch of the road. the fix will cost about $10 million. >>> this might leave you a bit shaken. a mountain lion spotted peering into a home through the glass sliding door. a san jose neighborhood is on alert after the big cat showed up in somebody's backyard. apparently not the only sighting. robert handa joins us from the evergreen area with a look at that intruder. >> reporter: we're here at a santa clara county park

. >>> well, parts of yosemite national park closing again. lower and north pines campgrounds will be closed tomorrow. rangers say the warm weather is rapidly melting the snowpack and that means the merced river could be in a flood stage for a while. this is all triggering a flood watch. >> meteorologist rob mayeda joining us now. parts of the park closed a couple of weeks ago, reopened and now closed again. what's going on? >> we're looking at longer periods of warmer temperatures and we're still see snow falling in the sierra, now sustained warmer temperatures. we're looking at highs in the mid to upper 80s and overnight temperatures in the 40s and 50s, this on top of a snowpack statewide that's still 311% average of this day same time last year, only 20% of average. that's a lot of snow yet to melt. we still have this relatively cool to mild spring. now, with five to seven days of warm temperatures on the way, a flood warning now has just been issued for the merced river in yosemite. crossing that 10-foot level, taking it to flood stage tom

new video now from yosemite national park.today, the parks waterfalls are putting on an incredible show as snowmelt is pouring into the merced river, the most famous yosemite falls. of course, it's more than 2400 ft. tall cascades, including nevada falls, it nearly 600 ft. many of them can be accessed by visitors. if you're up for a fairly strenuous hike, people are crowding the park to see them. major rockslide has shut down part of highway 1 20 inside yosemite with the summer season just around the corner. the stretch of highway 1 20 is closed between big oak flat and merced grove until at least mid june, possibly into july. footage from caltrans shows the rock and debris there covering the road. that's a result of the severe weather this past winter. there are detours in place to get around the closure. well merryweather looks like we could have some thunderstorms pop up across parts of the sierra into the weekend. lots of the sierra. whether it's talking about the very weather take a look at the highest from this afternoon

this is the entrance to yosemite valley, and this is ho close it was to closing. it crested at 12.1 feet which is just below the level at which they do have to close off yosemite valley. it will gradually go down because the temperatures are going to cool off, which means there will not be as much melting happening as quickly. the cooling trend is going to impact us here in the bay area as well. much cooler for inland parts of the bay are as well, including 12 degrees below the toasty temperatures inland today. high temperatures will remain below average. a high-level storm system will settle in, meaning we will see the cool temperatures and also deeper marine layer eventually being able to push a little bit further inland. right now we do have some of that fog forming. temperatures have dropped down into the mid-to-upper 50s to around 60 degrees . the cool ai is going to move in tomorrow along a cold front that is goin to shift our winds a little bit and help to disrupt the marine layer a little bit. there will be some fog out there early tomorrow morning but wil

national park and yosemite valley.ood watch is still going to remain in effect for parts of that park and valleys through tuesday morning. but let's take a look at radar for we are tracking a mix of sun and clouds but future cast for going to see some changes in the form of light valley, rain and mountain snow returning as early as monday night. this is going to be on the lighter side, going to get a little bit of those delta winds around 20 to 30 miles per hour. but we are going to notice a very active weather pattern during the overnight hours tuesday morning by around 3 o'clock valley, rain and mountain snow will be the biggest impact in concern. and then by tuesday afternoon we will have a threat of pop-up thunderstorms that's going to continue into tuesday night as well as wednesday and possibly into thursday. we are tracking a very active weather pattern in this year with this winter-like storm surge. but truck truckee, 51 degrees south lake tahoe warming up to 49 degrees. so we are going to see 10 degrees of coo

water levels at yosemite are also very high and park rangers are advising visitors to keep distance visitingwaterfalls and the waterways. you don't even have to be so close, kari, because the mist makes things so slippery. i get so nervous seeing other people's kids. >> that video of the man being rescued, he got out and said, i should have listened to my mom. she told me not to get in the water. if your mom didn't tell you, these two moms will. >> stay out of the water. >> it's rushing. >> moving underneath. >> the undertow. we've also had thunderstorms firing up in that area, so for the upper elevations, much different weather compared to what we are seeing this in the bay area. i'm moving this 24 hours so you can see all those lightning strikes that were happening around tahoe and yosemite as well as up around the national forest. so many of these areas where people go for the memorial day will have very quickly changing weather conditions as well as melting sierra snow. we are expecting thunderstorms in that area, temperatures in the mid-60s for today, showers and thunderstorms and also

now, yosemite was forced to close last month for more than 3 weeks to the heavy snowfall. and they were closed against last week. thanks to flooding concerns for now. park officials recommend using the south and west entrances to access the valley. all right. well, a if you are going to be out doing things may today for cinco de mile or potentially over the next few days. you probably want to know what's going to be in store for the weather. john indoors, outdoors. what you working we and back to the u.s. anything big oak flat road is actually one of the biggest ways that people in the bay area get to 70's that might adjust your travel times up there a little bit. so. >> maybe look into that a little bit more. if you're heading to 70, expect a couple new inches of snowfall over the weekend. but i know there's a lot going on here in the bay area's rate. a mentidn we are going to be seeing in the east bay here. a little bit of cloud cover sitting right above the bay. but we're not looking at an active morning. in fact, we're kind of sitting it out for now not looking at any

it is happening in real-time, parts of yosemite are now flooding. snowmelt in the sierra caused the merced river to at flood stage, today. take a look, here. water is flowing in the yosemite national park, overtaking some roads and campgrounds, there, and impacting some of the visitor facilities. a park ranger says this is expected to be the peak of the flooding, and the park does remain open. visitors plan on going there to stay away from the water. park rangers have already had to swift water rescues in the past week alone. >> we have been following this for some time now, and yosemite they are certain to see that snowmelt, still so much snow across the sierra, these are the readings, as of today. 268% and on the north sierra, central 321, seven sierra 457. again, we will continue to follow this flooding the story here, certainly, for the next month and maybe even longer. back across the bay area, after some warm weather, today, those 80s, that will all change tomorrow. we have a system to the north and that is going to be dropping our temperature

yosemite does remain under a flood watch. but as reena mentioned, we didn't see as much melt last week, even though the heat was really on that snow capped and that is ideal we want to see is a slow, steady snow melt. it's exactly what we've got. slow steady snow melt with this cool down ahead of us. it's also going to slow down where we're at right now in downtown san francisco. got the low cloud cover out there. clouds sweeping across the bay had a pretty big seller rated pays because we've got some brisk winds pushing in along a cold front that rushes in across the region. this low pressure area right here, diving deep, allowing us some cooler weather and get this some rainfall and even some snowfall in the mountains in the days ahead of us starting tonight into tomorrow and lingering into wednesday. let's time it out for us today. so we should be dry during daytime hours today. you'll just notice a lot of clouds out there. couple of sprinkles possible here and there. but we really kick up those chances of rainfall on into

also for the merced river in yosemite, we've been monitoring this as well where we are expecting those river levels to continue to stay above flood stage. you want to make sure that you're calling ahead if you do have reservations for those campgrounds in yosemite, because some of them may close at a moment's notice if things get too dangerous there. as we bring you back home, we're seeing temperatures starting to warm up in some spots but not san francisco, where you still can't see, making your way across the golden gate bridge. now, this is gradually lifting up, although the visibility is getting a little better, but the low clouds and the fog is keeping the temperatures chilly. it is all clear as we look at dublin, 71 degrees. we'll head for the upper 70s. you'll notice it will be a little bit cooler than it was yesterday. right now a calm wind, but we are also going to see some of those breezes picking up. our temperatures in oakland headed for 69 degrees, we'll be in the upper 70s much of the north bay and upper 70s to low 80s in the south bay. and tomorrow it's going to be a lit

watch out if you're going to yosemite or tahoe because the river merced river, particularly in yosemite national park at paho, no bridge is expected to rise above flood stage later on tonight. so flood stages 10 ft. it's expected to go above 10 ft . right now. it's around nine ft. and then it's going to continue to go up and down, but saturday expected to rise to about 12 ft. flood warnings continue. for that river flood advisory up to the northwest of that in the central sierra right now, you are seeing those thunderstorms firing up with precipitation coming down right now live doppler seven showing you just some patches of fog and you can see it on the golden gate bridge. it was sunny earlier, but now it's socked in blue skies from santa cruz and emeryville zephyr cove. hazy sunshine from our emeryville camera. you can see just a beautiful day. coastal fogs spreads overnight areas of fog and drizzle the next two mornings, and it's going to be breezy and cooler the next few afternoons right on through the end of the work week and heading into the weekend, so the fog will fill back in.

and coming up on the kron 4 morning news, yosemite visitors can catch a break.k after the reopening another crack in the park's plans. >> and we're back at 5.45. another tough break for people planning on heading to yosemite national park this spring. big oak flat road is closed for repairs. and boy, you can see why giant crack going right down the middle park. officials say it's about 200 feet long and 4 feet deep and it continues from highway one 20 into the national park and it is forcing a closure from just inside the park boundary. toomer said grove repairs to keep that where we'll keep that road shut down until they think mid-june or perhaps july. and it's just the latest in a string of issues for the park. it's 7 was forced to close last month for more than 3 weeks because of all the heavy snowfall. and then they were close again last week because of flooding concerns for now, park officials are recommending using the south and west entrances to access the valley. >> record a year. yeah. as effects like that. thing. all right. well, it's hard to keep trac

. >> that is why they had to close the camp around yosemite valley, a lot more snow in that part of the sierra. like twice as much. so that is going to be a developing story, and we will continue to monitor that one, we will stay on top of that forecast if you have any plans to go to yosemite over the past couple weeks. the snowmelt is being felt here, not in the city right now, as we take a look. it is 66 degrees , right on the mark for average. we are going to use dublin as the example for what most inland valleys are doing, it is 80 degrees over here. that is the current number. we are right at that point in the day anyway, and since we top out around 88 here for pleasanton, livermore, let's look ahead, and you can see how much cooler you are about to get, by the time we get to thursday and friday, back down into the mid-70s. here is everybody's daytime highs today, we are going to experience a cooldown, it just won't be as dramatic as the places that had the warm-up so much. the northbay valley and south bay, in the low 80s today, your numbers will come back down into the upper 70s.

the melting snowpack sending water rushing into rivers and over yosemite falls. forecasters expected the merced river to overflow its banks over the weekend but that never happened. for now, the risk of flooding has passed. park rangers are still urging all visitors to stay away from all of the raging waters out there. beautiful sights to see. meteorologist kari hall is here with us right now. i know that we're getting a pause on the warmer weather that we've been experiencing. >> it's still a little warmer compared to what we like to see with all the sierra snow, but there's also going to be rain on top of that, which could cause a greater snowmelt with temperatures above freezing. but we could see slow for the upper elevations, so kind of a mixed bag. for people who were waiting for the weekend to go and hike around yosemite, well, the next few days, the weather is going to be pretty dicey here with temperatures reaching into the upper 50s and then those overnight temperatures in the 30s with, also, the possibility of some thunderstorms moving through. we're al
