look how bad it was in yosemite on saturday. a little patch of blue sky, but everything else is smoke. to put a little perspective on this, the fire burning in yosemite, the pika fire now at 800 acres, it's big enough to visualize from the satellites. here we are in the bay area, yosemite on the other side of the state, placing that heat signature where the fire is, right on the north rim of yosemite valley. there's el capitan, the valley, half dome in the distance and here's what 800 acres looks like when you plot it using satellite data to show you where it is and also how big it is. this is a big problem for air quality in yosemite valley because every night the smoke coming off this sinks into the valley and there is a fascinating pattern. it's also really unpleasant for what it's doing to air quality in the valley. we know the air quality scale. green is good. purple is hazardous. here comes the times of the day down here. most of the afternoon the air quality is okay in yosemite valley, moderate to good, but overnight the

the waterfalls are still roaring at yosemite. a beautiful sight, but only if you can get inside the park. visitors say it's been so crowded that sometimes it's taking up to four hours just to reach the entrance. yeah, we know this. summer is traditionally busy at yosemite, but this is the first year since the pandemic that you don't need a reservation to get in. and the crowds are epic. these photos posted by park staff show the lines for the park's buses and the cars park pretty much anywhere you can find a spot. joining us now, steve lyon, a ranger at yosemite national park. steve, nice to have you on the program. this is kind of crazy. a four-hour wait. would you consider bringing back the reservation system? >> we're in discussions to do that, but we don't know about that just yet. people can look up on the yosemite website information about traffic and parking issues there, and we're working on fixes for it. >> steve, in the interim, is there any sort of crowd control you guys are implementing in the next few weeks or traffi

a big issue with the air quality not just for the hikers in yosemite but in yosemite valley because it settles down every morning because cold air drains to the lower elevations. when you get into the purple, you are at the hazardous level. between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. each morning air quality has been in the hazardous category in the valley where hotels and camp grounds are. it gets better into the afternoon. by 11:00 a.m., it's come down a little bit today and will probably be moderate or good by the time we get here. you still get several hours a day in the overnight in yosemite valley where you are breathing hazardous levels. if you have plans to go, stay on top of that. you don't want to breathe more of that than you have to. >> thank you. >>> stanford doctors planning rally wednesday after several months of contract negotiations. it will be in palo alto and includes residents and fellows. doctors are struggling to afford basic necessities. the rally is from 12:30 to 1:00 in the afternoon. it is unclear how many appointments will be affected. we are reaching to stanford for rea

but what is not getting enough news is the recent fire that has started in yosemite. and this is the view in yosemite, courtesy of one of the cameras that sits looking back towards the valley. that smoke up into the sky. you see a couple patches a smoke in the distance? that is all smoke. what is happening -- by the way, it is coming from a relatively small wild fire that was sparked by lightning. so it is a naturally occurring wildfire and the park is going to let it go because you kind of have to let buyers go. if you put this out, you'll have to pay for it down the road. is a naturally sparked fire. you have got to let it go for the health of the forest. but look at the times here. this shows you how bad the air quality gets per hour. during the day, it is okay. but in the overnight hours in yosemite valley, this is the overnight air quality sensor, the air quality is going down to hazardous levels. the. bars show you where it goes hazardous. at night, it takes all the smoke and springs it down into the valley. then during the day the warm air rises and the air sta
