yosemite was closed because of the snow. and now again because of flood-causing melt. let's bring in scott, a park ranger and spokesman for yosemite national park. you're up in yosemite meadows along the merced river. you're joining us by phone. describe what you're seeing right now. >> good morning. and thank you for having me on. it is a beautiful day here in yosemite. the merced river is just about at flood stage. the way the flood cycle works, or the melt cycle, is we get our highest flows from about 2:00 in the morning until about 5:00, so we're seeing the merced river just raging, and just right up at about flood stage. we're doing well. we're done some closures before. so we have a lot of the visitors out of the flood prone areas but we got a lot of water and the water falls are going like i've never seen them before. >> oh, my gosh. and we were looking at some of the pictures from wednesday. i mean it looks beautiful, striking, everything that the people who have booked, you know, perhaps months or even a year in advance, want to see, and many of them appreciate what is happening, but some tourists might be saying, wait a minute, t

all those waterfalls and yosemite national park.y through the next few days, that's still very, very heavy. snow pack is going to melt exceedingly fast. the southern sierra, the rivers down there, the kern kings and to larry rivers. those are what drain into lake, which is a pretty fascinating case, was once the biggest freshwater lake west of the mississippi river. but then was drained for agriculture. now it's filling up again for the first time in over 100 years. and we are seeing that 300% of normal snowpack in the sierra all draining down into that basin right there. and that's the big concern for the central sierra where yosemite is. we have 250% of snowpack for this time of year. that's going to be filling into yosemite valley resulting in likely some flooding at the merced river. also pretty impressive in the northern sierra, too. yosemite national park goes under a flood watch starting tomorrow and lasting through tuesday of next week. and that's the same on up through lake tahoe. so if you are heading up to the sierra watc

that's the flooding potential and yosemite national park actually closing most of the park from friday on into the weekend. so do know that yet. plans on getting up into the sierra this weekend. as for what we've got the bay area, you can see out there that low gray fog officially making its return. look closely. you can see downtown san francisco in the distance. this fog is very compacted into the bay relatively thin marine layer. so it's not going to stick around for long after it burns off its to the heat. we go sunshine in full force come the afternoon ahead of us. and yes, daytime highs these next several days going to be tapping into some low 90's in many cases for the first time this entire season. so today staying a little cooler at the coast. you'll have that low gray out there for most of the day while elsewhere in the bay area. most of the day is abundantly sunny. tomorrow morning. some relief we get thursday morning started with some fog and even coastal drizzle. that is going to bring relief to our heat stricken areas with tomorrow's daytime highs likely to be even warmer
