because you never start a rescue, you never start a lifting exercise, never start anything, unless you know you are going to be able to finish it, have enough of the resources to do it. and do you have the right equipment? you need specialized equipment? do you have access to that? maybe, maybe not. so size up, you want to establish your priorities, make your decisions. you want to come up with a plan and after you have a plan, you want to take action. remember, it's continuous fact gathering process. you want to evaluate your progress. there are 50 percent of the people can be rescued by who? this is where you come in for the next 30 percent to make it 80 percent of the people. the next 30 percent of the people can be rescued by you people. then there's another 15 percent, that's where the fire department comes in, or the sheriff's department, people who are trained to do those type of rescue. the other 5 percent is by specialized teams, the usar teams. if you are to get to somebody within the first 30 minutes, they have a 99 percent chance -- a greater than 99 percent chance of survi

make sure you know what you have so you don't cross contaminate. you don't want to put bleach next to ammonia. in a disaster if /taeu break and mix, what will happen. you will have a hazardous material place in your house. how about this? the typical garage. most people don't have gas in the suburbs you do. if you have lawn mowers. store it low. gas fumes will creep down to the bottom. if you have to store gas, store it mostly full. if you have an empty gas container -- if you want to protect yourself put cords across it so it doesn't fall in an earthquake. you screw it in. strap it across. make sure the shelf is screwed into the wall if it's screwed into a stud it will not tip over. when you go home look at your hazards. get everything in a box. there is no correct spot to put it. some people get a can and put it in their yard. it's up to you. there is no correct spot it's where everybody in your family knows where it is. if you are not home and a disaster hits who the find it. the whole family gets involved you, yourself, family members, kids, le

you breathe them. you can eat them or get them on you. okay. or they can be injected into you. like if you have hazardous material at the grand autoand you slip and you get stuck. it's in you and on you. stay out of that place. here's a look of hazardous spills. the can tainer is bubling and oozing. bubling liquids or vapors. yeah. anything like that if you see something like that after an earthquake. don't kick it, pick it up or taste it. you will safety first. then everybody around you. isolate the area, for everybody else. and notice the fire department, that's us. around the house we use, limit the amount of stuff you are storing. we like to isolate the materials in enclosed cabinets locked metal ones are best, separate the flammables for the oxidizers. the bleach from the ammonia. you will ask me, george, where do i take this garage full of stuff. i have a garage full of stuff i don't use. there is a place on tunnel avenue if you are a city resident you take it down there and show them you are a city resident and they will take it. call us. say, i can't get down there i ha

for you.hat is a couple of hundred bucks, the best investment. if you are in other types of building it is complicated. if you are in a high-rise building you just can't anchor your building down because there are no anchor bolts, but at that point, the tenant should be asking questions of the owner's and the managers about earthquake preparedness >> and don't take the easy answer, oh, our building is safe it was designed to code. that is not the right answer, ask the tough questions and see if you can get a report that has been given to you. >> what is the right question? will i be able to stay in my home after the expected earthquake? is that a good question to ask? >> yeah, you may be more specific if you talk to the owner, if it is not a recent building, if it is ten or 20 years old see if they had an inspection done and there you will have a written before that will tell you all about the structure. >> thanks, pat. >> thanks, harvey. and thanks david for joining us and thank you for joini
