i hope that you as city and county residents will see in our work that we really take some efforts that will reform. anybody that has participated in the criminal justice system for any length of time knows that it does not work from whatever and will you are looking at it, so the question is how do we make it better? we hope to engage all of you in that. we are starting neighborhood courts, and a lot of efforts that we hope to engage the city and county in supporting us and looking at ways to move away from the over incarceration of people and look at ways to reform their behavior. the efforts we have undertaken when george was appointed to the position -- jeff asked him to come to the public defender's office to have a question and answer session, which he did, and i attended with him. we are told that was the first time that had ever happened, and we reciprocated by asking jeff to meet with the district attorneys in our office. we have begun a dialogue that both sides think is very healthy. we have identified a number of issues that we think require further exploration, so we are cre

you to remember as you leave today. i just want to mention something about hetch hetchy. some people out there are suggesting we can tear down that dam and still survive as a city. i want to let you know, as insane as it is, it is, in fact, insane. city. that economy begins with looking at where all of our economic streams are as the city. when we create more jobs, youyour parents, friends, can stay in the city longer and not feel the pressure that you cannot afford to live in the city. that has been a very big request coming to me as the mayor, make the city more affordable to allow more families. making sure it is safe. i think we have a pretty safe city. we have a good police chief working with community, not working by themselves. we're trying to do this concept called community policing. when you get on certain lines, you're looking around saying if you are safe. we have been teaching all of you and hopefully you got the message, if you have an iphone or in ipad, please be alert when you are on the muni. do not become a victim. if something happens, do not be a hero. we have cameras mounted, things that we can do to catch the bad folks. we do want to make sure that muni is safe. not only affordable, but safe. so your experience will be ones where you will always say, san francisco is my city. i grew up here. i want to be here. i want to have a

city and county. getting my breath, walking up the stairs. honorable commissioners i am here to address you as representatives of the city that once knew how. in the context of a list of tricky projects that we have in the stheans all of the money we are spending on the bay bridge, bike paths, no train accommodations. all of the money we are spending on the presidio freeway. speak to you on the matter of the central subway as a former muni operator, and not just any operator but a cable car gripman. i will speak about the maintenance for a minute. your car, if you have a flat tire, maybe you can blame it on maintenance or maybe not. maybe a downed electric wire. cable cars. maintenance. dead risk to passengers, operators. to take money from muni, which is traditionally so short, so sorry on a capital basis, on an operating basis, vehicle by vehicle, barn by barn, year by year, budget by budget. to rescue this central subway process it is outrageous. you will see the proof of this on central subway, especially for the end user for whom it will take so much more time. please do not raid muni's b

are a number of pedestrian safety issues that i would love to partner with you on as we increase making our city safer for our pedestrians, which all of us are. you can probably interface with some of the individuals in the room today. i highly recommend attending a meeting to learn more about the we are engaging in and the priorities that the pedestrians would like to see. but another priority for my office is cigarette out how we can work with the mta around tokens and with a clientele that come into our centers. this is so that people can go to shelters, their house and appointments, job interviews. that is initiative that we would like to work with you and the mta on and as we discussed, many of our homeless clients are disabled and that is a huge barrier for them and for a variety of different issues entering into the housing and unemployment every now. i'm happy to see you here. i think that you are incredibly thoughtful. you will engage with many of our meetings -- many of our members and attend meetings. we appreciate your willingness to spend this time because it is a huge commitment. t
