mohammed, you were in gaza city as we did a technical check, we heard explosions in the background. have the last few days been like for you? >> the last few days have been - i have lived through so many israeli shellings, and it's horrifying - people in gaza are staying in their homes, avoiding the streets. they believe if they run on the streets they are a targets, but people fleeing homes have been tarts for attacks -- targets for attacks. the atmosphere is one of fear. people who have been out in the streets, children who were targeted, you know while they were on the beach or playing on the rooftops. everyone is trying to stay away from danger and they are frightened. we are hoping that we survive the israeli bombs and attacks. >> you teach at an american university. if you ask american jew and israeli jewing the same question, do you think you'll get similar answers or does distance distort reality? >> that's an interesting question. i think in many ways the distance sometimes distorts reality, at other times gives you a better perspective. i think that there are many israelis

from the flares, you felt where you were standing carl and you know any more about that explosion now? >> yeah, we are just getting word from cnn colleagues here in gaza city that that explosion appears to have taken place right on the mosque. that is a hamas-run mosque. interestingly enough, as well, it is opposite the gaza house that belongs to the president of the palestinian authority. but it seems that the airstrike was targeting the mosque near his house. that is the largest explosion we've heard in gaza city for several hours. also, worrying quite clearly saying the israeli military has in the past dropped pamphlets on certain areas of gas why or sent text messages telling people to clear out of their homes. but the worrying thing tonight is that the israeli military sent text messages to residents of northern gaza telling them to flee to gaza city. but right now, these illumination rounds wrs explosives going off in gaza city, right in the area where the israeli military hold in the north of the strip. from north to gaza city, putting themselves once began in the line of fire. that does illustrate that palestinians here have no place to flee. they

you talked about how it was in the early morning in the dark, and it was so dark. you talked about the power plant. there was an explosion there. there were areas of gaza city completely and utterly dark. israel said today they would sent supplies, diesel for the power station, supplies. have you seen any of that? >> reporter: we haven't soon any of that, erin. in fact there are power lines that connect israel to gaza. that was what brings actually most of gaza's power in, but they were bombed in the first few days of this confrontation. as far as what the picture looks like in gaza city right now, you know, that's it. it's a black hole. you know, one or two lights pops on in windows. that coit to me that people have small personal generators, but gaza is without power. it may even be worse, because we heard more air strikes around the power plant. tonight it is the diesel fuel tanks that have been damaged there. even if new fuel does come in, there's nowhere to put itivities karl penhaul, thank you. >>> as karl mentioned there is huge controversy who actually fired the missile into the school. richard roth reports from the u.n. >> reporter: it's the missil

than 100 bodies in areas that were previously far too dangerous to enter because of the israeli bombardment. i want to bring in a correspondent who is in gaza city for us. ian, can you give us a sense of how vast the damage is there in gaza? >> reporter: well, sara, we were in the neighborhoods today, and where it's been the front lines, and utter devastation. whole neighborhoods reduced to rubble and 2007 twisted metal. as you said earlier over 100 bodies recovered. what we just heard from the ministry of health, they put that number at over 150 bodies that have been recovered from the rubble. just from all strewn out all over these neighborhoods. really when you walk in there, you can't make out much of buildings or shops that used to be there. it's all collapsed on itself. this was an important cease-fire for these areas. people were able to return to their homes. get the few possessions that they were able to manage to carry back to their -- to the u.n.-run shelters and these u.n.-run shelters also saw an influx of more people taking refuge in them. that number is over 160,000 people who are trying to find some sort of safety in these areas. other people we are

karl penhaul is out front in gaza city. you were there and you saw that. thins around the world, i'm sure, though, this is something you won't forget. is there any indication of who did it? >> it's stumped us a little bit, as you say, both sides playing the blame game. we went back to the school about three hours after it had been evacuated to see if we could get any evidence about what caused this blast. there was a small blast area on the ground. it wasn't very deep. it was only about an inch deep. nothing to speak of in terms of the large crater or anything. we saw shrapnel that had pockmarked the walls of the school from a very few inches off the ground right up to 25 foot in the air. the blast radius looked to be 30 to 35 yards around but unclear what type of weapon would be used. also on that front, unclear who would have fired that weapon. now, we know that the israeli military suggested that possibly this was a hamas rocket that misfired. our security consultants tell us if it had been a rocket, we could expect to find rocket parts at the blast sit

you this. we understand that residents of gaza, in the north, were sent text messages and given cell phone calls told to evacuate their homes because of a greater intensified israeli offensive that was planned. you are in gaza city. explain to me how this works. this was not the area residents have been told to get out en masse right now. who lives in this neighborhood where you are working? what are these buildings that are surrounding you? what sense do you have of this area where this missile or bomb struck, you know, about three minutes ago directly behind you? >> reporter: in terms of the area immediately surrounding us, john, it is a residential area, some offices. 500 yards away is a multistory building, the headquarters of a hamas run radio station. it was hit three times with bombs during the night. at least once while we were on air. for the most part, what is around us, a little bit of business on the first level, street level, small stores, their apartment buildlingining, office buildings as well. one block away, are two schools. two schools that are being used as shelters for displaced people that have fled from other parts of gaza because of fighting, raging around their own homes. that will terrif

in israel. so, obviously, tel aviv you should alert. but there were deaths overnight in gaza. is that all confirmed? >> reporter: absolutely. i mean, very completely different story in gaza. no sirens new york citye. in fact, the accounts have been horrific, particularly in the city in the southern part of za ga za. there was an israeli air strike targeting the home of a palestinian member of hamas as we understand it. at least seven people were killed in that house. including women and children. all from the same family. in addition to that, the death toll from the first day of israeli air strikes across the gaza strip at 15. more than 80 people injured. and it seems hamas is some of the statements coming out of hamas officials suggest that they, too, now plan on escalating the response by launching rocket fire deeper into israel. but the concern among health officials inside the gaza strip is that simply gaza is besieged for past several years. they don't have the infrastructure to support the kind of casualties that these types of conflicts bring. it is a tremendous humanitarian crisis for them as these death tolls and casualty tolls continue to increase with more israeli operations. andrea?

in gaza city. you told us how people were celebrating there. voices of people celebrating once they heard the news of this claim through the airwaves that indeed an israeli soldier had been captured by this military wing of hamas. tell us more in detail what you've learned since then. >> yeah, i think there is a certain number of important points that ambassador oren brings up. first of all, this is a claim by the spokesman of the al qassam brigades. we're working to independently confirm that and seeking any kind of confirmation from the israeli military. in the al qassam brigade statement, they did give the name and the number of that soldier. we're holding back on giving those details out on our air. we feel that any military organization either regular army or irregular army has the right to follow its procedures and inform the next of kin first, but we do have that information. that i would guess, al qassam brigades are trying to put out to lend credence to their claim. of course, in any war, one cannot necessarily take the first word of a

we were at one house here in gaza city that is usually for about six or seven people, there were eight families, 20 children, 50 people in all in that house. and i just want youlook at something tonight. right behind me, there is not a lot to look at, it's all black. that's not because there is nothing there, tony. actually there is a burgeoning large community right on the mediterranean sea which is a few hundred feet away. but it's a blackout across much of gaza tonight. there is a huge blackout. we have been here three nights in a row, we have never seen it this black. the main power station has been damaged here so the infrastructure for all gazans regardless of whether they are in their only homes or someone else's home really is challenge the right now. and they are losing things like water, power, and food. >> so, nick, we understand we have been following it the last few days it's been kind of a flurry, right of diplomatic efforts in gaza and recent days and surrounding areas and egypt. what about those efforts that are underway right now? any headway being made? >> reporter: yeah, you and i talked about what a u.s. official told me last night, that h

gaza city. i understand there have been plenty more israeli air strikes today. what can you tell us? >> we were in northern gaza in the beit hanoun area, and one after the other hit. you mentioned the death toll. we were at one house where a rocket had been fired into that house. apparently they did not receive a warning. that rocket exploded in the wall, on the wall, next to an alley where there were a bunch of children playing. one 4-year-old boy had his head blown off. we still saw pieces of his skull had been collected by the people in the neighborhood. this is an area that is oftentimes in the firing line from israeli air strikes and retaliatory raids. certainly people there are extremely worried about what's going to happen if israel has a ground incursion. the problem is, as they will quickly tell you, they have nowhere to go. we didn't mean one man right after that strike took place, where the 4-year-old was killed, he was taking away his four children. he said, i'm getting out of here because i don't want them to be killed by a rocket as well. this is an area that apparently local residen

were launched in the direction of the city. they were intercepted by the iron dome and back to normal. >> how close are you to moving ground forces into gaza know that israel is continuing its air strikes. what about moving carriers into gaza? is that about to happen? >> the israeli defense forces on the border with gaza today have reached a level of about three brigades, infantry, and also artillery as well as special forces. indeed we are taking all of the necessary steps in order to be prepared if that is required. we don't want to go there. we are taking the steps. hope is not a method. we have to be prepared for that escalation. the rockets are still coming over from gaza. we are trying to control that. we are trying to take out the rocket launching capabilities. we're trying to strike the command and control facilities of hamas. it's a tough question. we have to be patient. this is a clear design crafted mission. it's not something we're just doing out of a gut reflex. i think a great credit goes to the iron dome missile defense system that actually gives that ability to the decision makers here to our leadership to sit back, look at
