question from the audience, and this will be direct today the congressman first, what cry criteria do younuse in deciding to confirm a supreme court nominee? congressman? akin: well, i think the first thing is that we are a system of laws, as i've mentioned before, and the job of the court is to interpret the existing law, not to create law. be so that would be the very first thing i would look for. if you take a look at some of the big social upheavals and lousy decisions you get out of washington, d.c., a lot of them have come from judges who got frustrated and wanted to become legislators. and, um, so that would be the thing i would look for, first of all, in a judge. i would look for a judge that doesn't think that maybe the constitution is plastic, and we need to adapt some ideas from some foreign country and stick it in and pretend that that's part of our constitution. i don't think that's the right way to go. and so i, i believe that we have to keep the judges doing the proper function of judges, and, um, and that would solve an awful lot of problems. it also tends to push problems
