lady or a young man in their home, what do they need to know? how do they... what signs do they need to look for? that is a really good question, and i think all of the parents who are out there viewing this program are wondering, "what can i do to increase the likelihood that my kids don't end up with problems that lead to suicide, depression, or substance use?" i think the most important thing, first of all, is to just be a really good parent and listen. and then, secondly, educate yourself and learn about these things, learn about community resources and work together with other parents, particularly in your schools and your communities, to make sure that all of your kids together are getting what they need to grow up to be healthy and avoid problem behaviors. and when things do surface, i think it is really important for parents not to necessarily blame themselves, but definitely proactively get the kind of support they need, both for themselves and their children, to increase the likelihood that little problems won't turn into great big pro

they're just young people that need a safe home. some of these kids are fantastic, some are challenging, some are motivated, and some are struggling to find their path. there are without homes because they have broken families or they grew up with no safety net. because they live in an expensive city where many people find it challenging to pay for their housing. they are not bad kids. they adapt to their surroundings and they are influenced by those around them. if they are in a neighborhood with violence or drug use, they have the potential to be turned to those avenues. if adults encourage them to be their best self, that is to they will become. they want safety, stability, and a positive community. i have seen the potential time and time again. we can leave these kids on the streets and say that the only neighborhoods they belong in are the most dangerous and vulnerable areas, or we can make the statement that all young people deserve the opportunity to build of standing lives. i am also submitting -- [inaudible] president chiu:

i have always said that whenever you have young people in the room, and you have young people engaging in this type of discussion, it is a lot more substantive and thoughtful than a lot of what you see in that building. i am proud of you, and grateful for all the different perspectives. i look forward to continuing this discussion in the spirit of what we heard today. this resolution simply calls for a collaborative process among all the city agencies. it is my hope it will come out of this committee today. i want to acknowledge my colleagues who are co-sponsors of the resolution, supervisors avalos, cohen, kim, mar, mirkarimi and president chiu. we want to have additional co- sponsors to make this a reality. there is a lot more to be said, and a lot more will be said. i believe the issue of whether or not they should be for all youth are targeted for low income -- i understand the perspective. i think the young lady who spoke about that was eloquent and articulate. i simply would respectfully disagree, because i do worry about the possible stigma created, in addition to worrying about

that was comprised of representatives and young people. that is one of the most primary needs for young people. it is estimated that there are 3700 young people in san francisco that are at risk for homelessness each year. we are able to house about 400 of those youths currently. that is why this particular project was selected for the neighborhood. the young people are expected to be engaged in education and employment. the development of life skills and self-sufficiency. we operate over 200 units of housing in san francisco. the young people that stay in our program the various about two to three years. youth move in and moved out. most of us do not live where we move -- where we lived when we were 22 years old. the common areas and bedrooms are designed to provide a nice comfortable place to live at is not so comfortable you are bored to want to stay there the rest of your life. young people are working on the skills that they need to exit. they will have a job. they will make doctor's appointments, in developing peer relationships. 75%

instead of saying a young person has a fight and hurting someone, instead of sending that young person ought to be incarcerated immediately, what we do is we put him or her and supporters, family members in a circle with the person who was harmed along with their family members and a facilitator, and that young person has the opportunity to sit face-to-face across from the person that was harmed and hear that person say, "you have devastated me. this is how. here are the human consequences of his or her actions, and the circle all together will come up with an action for the person to repair the harm. this is just an example -- say it is a case of a young person who has burned down a building, someone's home or business. instead of sending that person off to be incarcerated, he or she could be by the circle sentenced to serve 200 hours, being the personal assistant for a burn patient. that is the kind of thing that will really transform lives. i think we went through as a young family the discussion and dialogue that many young families go through. should we move to the suburbs? away decided to stick around and we are very happy we did. once you stick around i think it was a turning point to say we are here for good. what can we do to make this place better? there were a lot of lessons to be learned in running a race in san francisco. a few that stick out, money does matter. raising money. that is a simple, somewhat unfortunate fact if you want to be candidate. most importantly, one thing i drew out of it is hard work and utter determination is the thing that will, i think, allow to succeed more than anything else. i came from the private sector and looking at honestly answering the question did i have something different to offer that i thought would be valuable it san francisco right now and i think a hrrpbl part of our -- large part of problems are financial and with my background i think i can add a lot of value and that is why i decided to bet in the race. >> it means there might be some small profit if you run it correctl
