lady or a young man in their home, what do they need to know? how do they... what signs do they need to look for? that is a really good question, and i think all of the parents who are out there viewing this program are wondering, "what can i do to increase the likelihood that my kids don't end up with problems that lead to suicide, depression, or substance use?" i think the most important thing, first of all, is to just be a really good parent and listen. and then, secondly, educate yourself and learn about these things, learn about community resources and work together with other parents, particularly in your schools and your communities, to make sure that all of your kids together are getting what they need to grow up to be healthy and avoid problem behaviors. and when things do surface, i think it is really important for parents not to necessarily blame themselves, but definitely proactively get the kind of support they need, both for themselves and their children, to increase the likelihood that little problems won't turn into great big pro

this young man call about criminals victimizing kids on the 38 bus line. every day these guys were getting on the same stop and steal shoesing and pack backs from kids and get off the next stop. no one did anything about it. he didn't do anything about it until the guy in the row in front of him got victimized. the police were able to put up a sting operation and that they were able to catch them. another instance. somebody jumped on the bus and beat this boy up and jumped off the bus and the other students at our school have all our students have been taught what to do in case someone hurts you on the bus. they had the bus number. the time, the description of what the people looked like and within 2 days these people were arrested. part of what we need to do is teach our kids to be aware of their environments. especially for middle school kids. they are not as worldly as high school kids. they need to be trained to negotiate their environments. >> i think that's a great bridge to doctor wenz, you teach people how to negotiate an environment. it you tell u

instead of saying a young person has a fight and hurting someone, instead of sending that young person ought to be incarcerated immediately, what we do is we put him or her and supporters, family members in a circle with the person who was harmed along with their family members and a facilitator, and that young person has the opportunity to sit face-to-face across from the person that was harmed and hear that person say, "you have devastated me. this is how. here are the human consequences of his or her actions, and the circle all together will come up with an action for the person to repair the harm. this is just an example -- say it is a case of a young person who has burned down a building, someone's home or business. instead of sending that person off to be incarcerated, he or she could be by the circle sentenced to serve 200 hours, being the personal assistant for a burn patient. that is the kind of thing that will really transform lives. many of the issues that our young people are struggling with each and every day. we are going to be presenting some very, i think, helpful important information. we start with the facts about what we're seeing in san francisco. we're focuses not only on individuals who are allegeed to have pertraited violence. but who are victimized. we use those words as being 2 polarized entities. many of those are perpetrators themselves. some of the surveys we have done at the youth guidance center. 77 percent believed a gun was necessary for their own protection. that says a lot about our society that a young purpose would feel compelled to carry a gun. to many people they would think of that as outrageous. there was an incident reported by joe tucker about a first grader who had a gun and brought it to school. we have to question how does that happen? what is the thinking, and again you're talking about a first grader. and what can we do as youth workers? as educators? as parents. as teachers to help insure that our youth don't grow up in a world where that type of behavior
