hundreds turned out in downtown yuba city to watch the race but they had to leave disappointed when their hometown horse did not win. chrome's hometown track is los alamedas. abc news reporter nick smith has more. >> reporter: the faces tell the story. >> disappointed. but it was a good race. >> reporter: there is a reason only 11 horses have won the kentucky derby, preakness and belmont stakes all in the same year. it is not easy to do. >> he has the preakness and the kentucky derby under his belt so had to root for him. >> we have a definite connection to this horse. >> reporter: undefeated since last december, and first in six consecutive races all eyes were on number two, california chrome to repeat that again today. >> the two owners, this was their first venture into horse racing. they were the talk of the country, they call this horse the people's horse. >> reporter: the people's horse was written by the man who may know him best, victor espinosa, california chrome's jockey. >> he started his career here in northern california, he was out of mexico, the leading apprentice in 1993.

. >>> a huge fire destroyed four buildings at a food production plant east of yuba city. this was the scene last night as the flames engulfed the building. firecrews battle the flames all night. a reporter is there to show us what is going on there now. >> reporter: ann, brian, even though this fire broke out last night you can still see smoke billowing out of the building right now. we still have firefighters working on it. the fire started at 10:30. that is 30 minutes after everything was processed and workers left for the night. firefighters tell us it is a good thing because not only where were no injuries because nobody was in the plant but if the plant was filled with walnuts it could have made things more difficult for the crews out here. they did face two problems. one there were wood palettes in the building that kept the fire going and propane tanks used for forklifts kept exploding. we spoke to a man who heard it and saw it happen. >> we were seeing flames and hearing explosions going off. >> reporter: the fire destroyed 200,000 square feet of building. firefig
