[applause] >> thank you very much. i appreciate the welcome and what it might say what it takes a little work to understand. this is a book of what has gone wrong in recent years and what we can do about it. as something has gone wrong it is clear or isn't as we sometimes think or imagine or pretend and sent on - - we are living through a social crisis from vicious partisan polarization and alienation and despair without opioid abuse in recent years. these are deep dysfunctions and parts of society but they have some common roots and not even to say exactly what those roots are but part of the crisis is that we cannot quite seem to get a handle on what that is. traditional economic concerns don't cut it. we went through a severe recession but that ended more than a decade ago and now we have been living through one of the longest economic expansions in the modern era with inflation and interest rates and wages are rising. they are not suffering economically but the problems on that front don't add up to the crisis we a
