♪ yvonne: this is "daybreak asia." i am yvonne man in hong kong.amy: i am ramy inocencio in new york. u.s. stocks blew past trade concerns for a little bit. the chiefg in economist and head of credit portfolio management. he is also a bloomberg opinion columnist and. thanks for taking the time to be with us. i want to get your initial reaction. we saw the u.s. markets at least close down. we saw the domino effect from asia to europe lead into the markets. we saw them rise by the end of the day on the back of technology shares. to what degree was this a surprise to you? what you are describing is a cascading effect across markets as everyone is trying to discount his next stage. friday actually starts, you see that they are actually coming into the fact as we speak. what the u.s. market was indeed saying is so many sectors were not so much impacted by the trade aspect. there's probably some value from investors. so to step in, i do not think it was too much of anything else other than we have, again, good numbers. this is a big question going or so.

yvonne: i am yvonne man in hong kong. senior fed officials weigh in on the economy and monetary policy. let's get to our global economics and policy editor, kathleen hays. she is here with more. tell us the message. is it back by the latest inflation data? kathleen: this is all very important as the week closes out. growth, inflation, trade, the federal reserve told npr on its marketplace program he sees the economy and a good place. low unemployment, growth is good. he is more concerned on trade policy. it is difficult to predict how it turns out. he could see a detrimental impact on the economy or maybe good. switch gears and get to patrick harker. our own michael mckee sat down with him. he says in regards to inflation, he is comfortable. even at as high as 2.5%. that would be well above the 2% target. let's hear what he said earlier. >> i had put in three for this year and next year. i have not moved off of that although i am open to an increase this year if we start to see inflation accelerated. kathleen: he is not r

yvonne: i'm yvonne man in hong kong.ld out all stocks in china. as the threat of trade war grows more intense. joining us is john fu. he manages about $60 million, all focused on asian markets. thank you so much for joining us. first time in your career you are doing this, selling out of chinese stocks. what is the rationale behind this, and a full exit? been managing asian equities for 20 years. this is not a permanent abandonment, it is a temporary avoidance. china is the largest economy in asia, and cannot be ignored. we are a fundamental equity house, and invest in stocks on a fundamental basis. we cannot invest in stocks in a vacuum. in environments where macro economics is more benign and normal, we do well in those environments. given the conditions today, we expect trade tensions to drag on and be even intensifying. it is difficult to apply a process. we are moving to look for other opportunities in asia that are less affected by this trade spat. yvonne: we will talk about those opportunities later. i'm wondering

yvonne: i am yvonne man in hong kong.ill release second-quarter gdp figures and the numbers could show the impact of president trump's trade war. let's look at that with endocrine. -- enda curran. forecast is 6.7% but at what point do they look for cracks? enda: we are still in early stages. industrial output might give some indication where you could see it. you look at the initial batch of tariffs, it was electronics and communications, good sectors. there could be something in those numbers today which are expected to slow down to 6.5%. the economy is slowing, but the real pain from the trade war will show up as the year goes on later this year and into 2019. ramy: looking at other numbers in terms of retail, fixed asset, retail is expected according to bloomberg economics to rise 8.8% versus the prior 8.5%. is that silver lining we should look stronger into? enda: you could argue it would be, but it is coming off a fairly weak month for retail sales. if it does rebound, it indicates the consumer side of things is hold

yvonne: how so?th that the authorities are starting to feel the economy is on its pass -- path. think they will have to tinker the world trade policy? do you see them dialing back on the expectations? think we have started the path. we have to remember, long-term interest rates are starting to edge up everywhere. we will have the 10 years in the u.s., higher rates in europe. we are beginning to see higher rates in japan. it may not be significant changes this week, but i think the direction is clear. ramy: in terms of cpi and the outlook, there is an expectation the bank of japan will lower those. as that a concern or is it facing reality? kirk: i think it is just facing reality. of cpi,ook at the part it is headed in the wrong direction. we will probably see them bring it down to near 1.5. what is important is the path. the path is headed in the right direction. ramy: as we have been talking about this over the past week or so, the yen has been strengthening from 113 to 110. in terms of where this m
