the university of maryland's basketball manager, zach letterer is battling brain cancer. recently he did his best strong man impression from his hospital bed and now zaching is everywhere. angie goff has his story. >> zach letterer is the big man on campus, not for his size but his heart. the 18-year-old student from ellicot city first beat cancer at age 11. seven years later, it returned. >> when you hear cancer, the first thing that enters your mind is death, obviously chemo, hospitals. a terrifying thing. the doctor put it a nice way. another opportunity. what a great way to put it. >> two weeks ago, surgeons at johns hopkins removed a tumor from zach's brain. his reaction resonated throughout the country. >> i'm drugged up. i don't remember it too well. i made a muscle and i said, dad, take a picture. >> reporter: his father posted the picture on facebook, his cousin struck the same pose and called it, rather than tebowing, zaching. before long, everybody was zaching. then there was fraternity guides, merrill coach turgeon, and even someone from times square. the mayo

. >> reporter: zach letterer is the face of inspiration and his zaching pose has taken the country byyone from maryland coaches and players to hollywood actors have picked up on the trend. >> the coolest ones in my mind are the ones with the kids in the hospital and adults in the hospital and in my mind the reason near so cool is that it shows that my point has gotten across. he's showing strength. he's showing the world he's going to make it. >> reporter: letterer is battling a brain tumor for the second time in his life. the maryland freshman and men's basketball manager had surgery january 25th to again remove the cancerous mass. that's when zaching started. >> as soon as i was diagnosed second time i didn't feel bad for myself one bit. when i'm coming out of surgery my one naught is i hope nobody is worried about -- thought is i hope nobody is worried about me. the first thing i did was said dad, take a picture of me and i did the pose to make it clear i'm strong as ever and i feel great. >> reporter: the picture was sent to his cousins who posted it on facebook. now it's viral, a

. >> reporter: 18-year-old zach letterer is an assistant manager for the men's basketball team. from this scar running down the right side of his head, you'd never know the centennial high school grad is fighting for his life. >> like this is the most people we've had. >> reporter: at this news conference, before wednesday night's game, against boston college, the focus was on zach and this photo taken of him right after he had brain surgery. >> i said, dad, take a picture of me. and i do the pose. and my mom said, john, don't you take that picture. and i said, no, dad, you take that picture right now. >> reporter: "that" picture has gone viral, with athletes athletes and celebrities getting in on the action by zaching, showing their support in his fight against cancer. >> the coolest ones in my mind are the ones one of the kids in the hospital. he's a strong kid, he's been through it before. he's real positive. he's positive every day in practice. he brings it every day in practice for us. and he's been a great inspiration. >> reporter: an inspiration, not only on the hard wood

. >> reporter: letterer has a long road ahead, including six months of chemotherapy. can you bet he'll be zach his way back to good health. lindsay murphy, fox 5 sports. >> all right, good story. turgeon callsletter his good luck charm and travelled with the team to clemson. the terps got the first road win of the season. laura? >> what a story. that was great. thank you very much. >> okay. >>> and it could be one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country. a virginia senate committee narrowly passed a health bill to e eliminate state funding abortions for low-income women. they voted 8-7 to advance the bill. the legislation is part of a major push for republican conservatives to restrict abortion in the commonwealth. >>> the maryland house of delegates could vote as early as tomorrow on a bill legalizing gay marriage. one democrat said that now he will support the bill. he was concerned a swing vote. right now, supporters and opponents are counting the votes the bill needs 71 supports, supporters for it to pass. last year, the bill failed in the house and passed in the state senate.
