coming up at 5 x zachary kiesch is going to be talking to some of the folks who are lucky to be alive. >>> and a man is in critical condition after slamming his vehicle into a tree at the u.s. capitol. police are investigating the crash that happened this morning. scott macfarlane has more on the accident that shut down streets for hours. >> reporter: such a violent crash in a sensitive area. you can see outside of the capitol, the remains of the silver bmw. the police spent the afternoon towing it off of the screen, and you can see how close we are to the capitol grounds. the car hit not one, but two trees, and you could see the debris from the trees laying about, and the police won't say if speed is a factor, but it is clear that there was so much speed involved, and some damage. police tell us that it was a flower planter at the base of the capitol to keep cars from going up the road, and you can see the scope of the damager hoo. no sign of a chase or accident nearby, but the male driver taken from the scene after the crash at 3:00 this morning. in southeast d.c., scott macfarlane,
