congresswoman zoe lofgren of california, thank you so much for your time today. i want to bring in george conway, a conservative attorney, and george, trump's legal team has until friday to clarify their request for a special master to susout this information. we saw a special master appointed after the fbi searched michael cohen's home and office and the same for rudy giuliani after the fbi searched his manhattan home. is it a strange request? >> it's a bizarre request here for a number of reasons. one is, there's no reason to believe that there is any attorney/client privilege here. the only privilege that could possibly apply is executive privilege, and executive privilege doesn't apply against the executive. these documents belong to the executive branch. they belong to the united states of america. and donald trump can't assert an executive branch privilege as a former president against the current executive branch. and beyond that, it's bizarre in terms of its timing. this search warrant was executed, what, two weeks and two days ago. and it's inconceivable

let's discuss all of this with democratic congresswoman zoe lof lofgren.with me this evening. i want to ask you first about this affidavit that we expect to be released tomorrow, redacted. do you believe that when it is released that it will provide the public with some measure of transparency while also protecting the investigation? >> well, i assume so. the judge had indicated that if it was so redacted as to be meaningless maybe he would not order its release. having decided to release something, one assumes that there will be some information that is not redacted. i do understand the need to protect witnesses at this stage in the investigation as well as to protect the ongoing case. so i have got to believe that the department of justice was very cautious in making sure that those sensitive items were edited out, at least for this point. we may see the whole thing at a later date. >> we're also hearing members of congress asking for more clarity and transparency. do you believe that the justice department owes that to members of congress both on the ba

. >> that was january 6th committee member zoe lofgren, voicing her concerns about the department homeland security inspector general, after it was revealed that he knew of the leaked secret service texts, promised before he reported it to congress. now, we are learning new revelations in the washington post that earlier this year, quote, staff at the inspector generals office plan to contact all dhs agencies, offering to have data specialists help retrieve messages from their phones, according to two government whistleblowers who provided reports to congress. but later that month, the inspector general's office decided it was not collecting any, or reviewing any agency phone, according to three people briefed on the decision. it led to top democrats renewing their calls for the dhs watchdog, to step down in a new letter sent today by congresswoman carroll maloney, the head of the oversight committee, and congressman benny thompson, the head of the homeland security committee. joining me now is one of the reporters who broke that story, the dhs inspector general, washington post investigat

zoe lofgren said the committee didn't even know about the wiped phones at the department of defense. what's your reaction that there are still so many new details and revelations coming to light over a year and a half after the insurrection? >> it's really incredible, and it shows you how important the work of this committee is. the fact they are now so publicly engaged in this vigorous investigation, you know, that's -- every investigator can tell you, you know, i had this experience myself and the fbi that maybe spend months and months investigating someone, and it's only after you arrest them and the investigation becomes public that other witnesses start coming forward, other people who have information starts calling the government and helping out and are less afraid to come in and share what they know. that's clearly happening here, and we really need the committee to keep doing their work to get to the bottom of all this information if we hope to walk away with a coherent picture. >> andrew mccabe, thanks as always for the conversation. i appreciate you taking the time. >>> ho
