i'm joined by pamela baker with the zoo here. talk a little bit -- first of all, obviously, you're all just devastated. >> this is a big loss. this is devastating. we're in the conservation business. it's life, and it's death, but this is a devastating loss for all of us. >> reporter: do we have any idea of what happened? >> we are very closely looking at all the video. what we know is at about 9:17 mei xiang gave a distress vocalization, a honking, if you will, and that alerted the panda keepers immediately and the volunteers who were watching her on the panda cam. and from there it took about an hour. they watched. they looked for the cub. they looked for motion. they looked for other vocalizations. by the time they were able to retrieve the cub safely -- because she never left the den. they had to do that safely. and the cub was given life resuscitating measures, but they could not resuscitate the cub. >> reporter: talk about what's happening here at the zoo now. >> right now mei is on 24-hour watch. she's our primary concern.

the defendant is megan mogenson, the zoo's director. her father is the owner of the reston zoo. his daughter is charged with animal cruelty in the death of a wallaby, a wallaby named parmesan. we found some youtube videos of other wallabies to show you what they look like. january 26th parmesan was found with a ruptured eye. megan called her father to see what to do and he apparently told her to euthanize the animal. she told police she euthanized the wallaby humanely by injection, but police say she drowned the animal. the responding police officer found the dead wallaby soaking wet and the medical examiner who did the necropsy on parmesan found no drugs on the body and no injection point. she did find blood in the lungs which is consistent with drowning. the examiner said the wallaby had no other major medical issues and the for that eye problem. a whistleblower named ashley rude is the one who called police. she was the curator of the zoo at this time and she called police moments after she found that webody. ashley rude said on the witness stand today she was extremely upset

our top story, terrible news at the national zoo. the giant panda bear cub died just a week after being born. >> john gonzalez is live at the zoo. >> good morning. zookeeper's will perform their to try to an autopsy out what went wrong with cub born just six days ago. they are trying to figure out if it had an infection or underlying problem. distress calls came in by the female giant panda bear early sunday morning to alert the wrong.omething was the joy and excitement from just a week ago quickly turned to grief. the panda bear cub was conceived by artificial insemination. the 14-year-old mother mei xiang had five failed pregnancies in past and they said their pregnantf getting again or less than 10%. despite no obvious signs of infection, the cub was not breathing. they performed cpr, but to no avail. a major blow for the national zoo and for this endangered species. there are only about 2000 of wide.orld john gonzalez reporting. >> the father accused of leading his two-year-old daughter home than 24 hours will go on trial. anthon
