i am joined by malcolm fitzpatrick, the head of conservation at london zoo and whipsnade zoo, so whathowever, the conservation breeding programmes that zoos collaborate on are very expensive to operate. we need to make sure we can access government funding to continue our vital conservation work. so the idea is that their zoos around the world share the animals, they move them around and that way, you keep the genetic diversity you need. so sizzle, the idea is to bring the new females in and if sizzle was a bit more enthusiastic, he would be over their greeting his new girlfriends and making them feel co mforta ble. new girlfriends and making them feel comfortable. how long does this process. . . comfortable. how long does this process... i've got to be quite careful how i describe it but how long does the process normally take to introduce new rhinos? how long would it take for sizzle to kind of, you know, become friendly with the new arrivals? it can take a long time but the conservation breeding programmes, we have been working for a year to programmes, we have been working for a y

the san francisco zoo's missing lemur has been found. maki is back home after getting a much-needed checkup and some rest. he was found at a school in daly city hanging out by himself. kate larsen spoke with the little boy who was the first to spot him. >> the parents were calling and saying there's a lemur out on the playground. >> reporter: that was not how miss sarah thought she would end her day in daly city. the san francisco zoo's missing lemur maki was out on the yard. >> he was hopping around the play structures, ultimately while he was waiting to be picked up was hiding in one of the plastic play houses. >> it's exciting. >> reporter: according to his parents it was 5-year-old james trin who spotted maki first when his mom picked him up from school. >> what did the lemur look like? >> lemur. white, black and gray. >> reporter: james knew what to do with a wild animal on the loose. >> call the zookeeper. >> reporter: so it was, animal care and control and daly city police showed up and took maki into custody. maki was discovered

he's a little dehydrated after being stolen from the zoo today night. 30-year-old corey mcgillaway is in jail tonight, accused of stealing a basket full of groceries from a supermarket, and the marin county sanitation truck he happened to be driving when he was arrested. when officers asked to look at his phone, they figured he might be connected to the lemur robbery, too. >> not every day you find somebody's personal phone with video of an endangered lemur on it. >> reporter: as we first reported, preschoolers spotted mocky thursday evening on the playground here in daley city. it was a thrill for the city. >> the lemur is really cool, but i thought it was a raccoon but it's not a raccoon. >> reporter: parents called 911 sometime around 5:00 p.m. a few hours later, about 9:00 p.m., officers here got a phone call for that grocery store robbery, which led to the arrest of corey gillaway. when they found images of a lemur on his phone, it set off a lightbulb. >> one of the other officers had just visited the zoo with his family the day before and learned a lemur had been stolen. >> repo

reporter: san francisco police tell us 30-year-old cory mcgilliway is accused of snatching maki from the zoo and faces felony charges like grand theft of an animal. >>> i believe 2020 needed a positive story, and the return of our ring-tail lemur to his home is such a story. >> reporter: yesterday maki turned up on the playground of a preschool in daly city. the children were thrilled to see the animal, and parents called 911 and animal control to safely get him. here's video of the officers with maki in an animal carrier getting ready to return him to the zoo. >> the lemur really cool but i thought it was a raccoon, bun it's not a raccoon. >> reporter: the staff at the zoo realized maki had vanished after seeing evidence of a break-in where the animal lived. today police in san francisco couldn't tell us how the ring-tailed lemur eventually got to daly city or the reason he was stolen. >> he was an aging wild animal who needed special care, including special medicines like for arthritis. while he's back here, he's still agitated, dehydrated, and hungry. we're working with our vet teams and
