how does the oakland zoo and your veterinary team go i into action?ot the call pretty early on the 31st and made our normal calls. whenever we get an urgent rescue from either the officers with the california department of fish and wildlife. but we get a lot this year. and so what we have to look at is do we have the space for them? do we have the knowledge to be able to care for these animals? and in this case, thankfully, we were able to, you know, pull out one last christmas miracle and make it happen. yeah. and she is. can you tell us a little bit about how ill she is? she when she first came in she was bright and alert but obvious very very skinny. poor coat condition, very thin hair. a bad skin condition. and she has some type of respiratory issue. so we're keeping her in a, in a warm room, almost like an incubator with a lot of humidity. we're still waiting on a number of tests to see if she does have any diseases. primates get most human diseases and that can affect them pretty severely. and of course, infants even more so. but she's her condi

all were centered about three miles northwest of the san francisco zoo. abc seven's lena howland talked with people who felt the initial quake just before sunrise friday morning. >> max gardner was in the process of getting up to start his day when he noticed some unexpected shaking. >> i was just puttering around, like making coffee and i, i noticed, like, the things in the kitchen started shaking, like the cabinets and the glasses in the cabinets. so i kind of froze. >> yeah. the u.s. geological survey says those shakes were part of a 3.7 magnitude earthquake. >> it only lasted like 10 to 15 seconds, but i immediately like, looked it up just to confirm, like, is that what's happening? >> the usgs says it hit about three miles off the coast from the san francisco zoo, and the depth of the quake was about five miles. an overnight guard at the zoo explains what he felt. >> i felt a little wobbliness in my legs for a moment, like i was getting really tired and i was like, for a second there, i was like, wow, the grape ship really got to me tonight, you know

did you feel like a 3.6 magnitude earthquake hit this morning near the san francisco zoo followed by some smaller quakes. not big by any stretch, but something kron four's. gayle ong joins us live in the studio with details. gayle, this woke some people up. >> it's sure dead. according to usgs, there were a total of 3 earthquakes. >> in the morning that 3.7. now 3.6 struck just after 07:00am followed by smaller earthquakes, you know, in the same area around 09:39am, in the morning and just before 11, am 3rd struck magnitude. 3 quake hit all considered small quakes. but people we spoke with felt the shake. >> just right up. i was feeding my son and all of a sudden just felt this huge jolt. people at ocean beach describing that jolt friday morning. the epicenter of multiple earthquakes struck offshore just 3 miles west-northwest of the san francisco zoo. >> and about 6 miles south west of the center of the golden gate bridge. it felt kind like someone hit the brakes in a car and sprinted into the doorway expecting more and then nothing robert de groot with the usgs earthquake science c

o the actual zoo or the animals. so when you have one isolated earthquake like that, or even a few within a few days, it's usually not a cause for concern. not all big earthquakes come with precursors and not small earthquakes are indicating of something else that's going to come. experts do say it is, however, important to remember the precautions we need to take in the middle of an earthquake. you must drop, hold and cover. have your emergency bags ready beforehand, and there are a number of resources online that really walk you through how much water, how many batteries, and the amount of clothes that you would want to bring in those emergency kits and emergency bags. those earthquake emergency bags are also useful as fire emergency bags, we're told. now, the new san francisco mayor, daniel lurie, said in a statement this morning in part, quote, as our hearts are with those across the state and the country dealing with natural disasters right now, we will always make sure san francisco is ready. and that is an imp

just after 07:00am this morning 3.7 magnitude, that one center just northwest of the san francisco zoo. again, that was at 7 o'clock this morning. now just moments ago, 2.5 aftershock having occurred right around the same area. this is right here along the san andreas fault. so if you are in closer proximity to the fault itself, that is those western neighborhoods of san francisco daly city down through pacific up. >> these are the areas there where you likely felt that shaking occur yet again, although you really felt that shaking, if you are close to these areas earlier on this morning, the usgs has several 1000 reports of people feeling that initial shaking just after 07:00am all across the rest of the bay area. but again, we just had a 2.5 moments ago that 3.7 earlier on this morning just after 7. so began an active morning. here's a look at the coast just south of where he would have felt that this isn't happening day right here. as you can see, all is calm. and i was still in this view, same in this view down in san jose. lots of sunshine. now winds are going to pick up just a li

the female spider monkey is about to undergo a critical procedure tomorrow at the oakland zoo. she was found monday inside a rolls royce in madera. the monkey was malnourished with an abnormal coat and skin, and suffered from an upper respiratory infection. may take months for her to recover. she is in a quarantined area of the zoo, now in a controlled air environment. >> she has not received proper nutrition. she would still be nursing from her mother for two years. we estimate that she's maybe somewhere between 5 and 6 months old tomorrow. >> the spider monkey will be put under anesthesia so she can be examined more thoroughly if she recovers. and that's certainly the hope the spider monkey will likely live the rest of her life in a zoo or some sort of sanctuary. >> more than one change vote, closed door meetings and drama. after all that, the house successfully chose a speaker. >> also ahead, they laid the foundation and got him up there. >> a look back at president jimmy carter's legacy, and the difference he made to the diversity of the in washington, san francisco congres
