we begin with mark zuckerberg and facebook. if you have a facebook account, you've probably reconnected with an old pal, shared photos with your family, and gotten advice from your friends on what to buy and what to read. but facebook has bigger plans. it wants to turn the entire web into one big social network. lesley stahl first talked with mark zuckerberg in 2008, and three years later, we sat down with mark again. he gave us a preview of his site's new profile page, a change that would affect the 500 million people who were then using facebook, an idea that zuckerberg had cooked up in his dorm room at harvard. >> when you first thought about this--19 years old--is this what you had in mind? did you see this far into the future, or is it way beyond what you dreamed? >> well, it's funny. i mean, when i was getting started, you know, with my roommates in college, you never think that you could build this company or anything like that, right? because, i mean--it just--and we were college students, right? >> yeah. >> i mean, we

could somebody get on zuckerberg's page and pretend to be him?ichelle juan, part of the government's u.s. emergency response team, and dave, a company that's hired to hack into companies' systems to find the bugs. thank you for joining us. michelle, how vulnerable is facebook? you say the bridge is short to go from hacking zuckerberg's timeline to actually posing as the man himself online? >> well, you know, identity theft is a problem, whether it's on facebook or in a lot of other areas on the internet. so, yes, it is a short bridge. but we do have to understand that a lot of protections are put in place to try and prevent those types of identity theft -- >> yeah, but the bottom line is, can you actually get on a page and pretend you're someone else? can you actually hack the identity of mark zuckerberg -- because that's real information. that's real market moving. you could send out stuff that he -- you know, people think he said. can you do it? >> well, you can do it. you know, i think that this proved that you could at least update his wall.

mark zuckerberg, he believes it's a tool, that everybody should have it, and what company they use is up to them. >> can you really do it? there are companies already trying to do it, and for example, google has balloons so they can bring activity after a natural disaster, for example, and companies scrambling to make a smart phone for less than $15, and a lot of companies out there trying to change and bring it about. can he do it? how mature is this idea? >> i think judging by what he said, it's in the stages, you have possibility and feasibility, and what takes him from one to the next, is how much skin there is in the game and playing against the inevitability of the change. the market must grow and people must get more involved with the access to the internet, and timeframe, and the period involved i think is a much more cloudy conclusion. you have to think 5, 10, 15 years. from the perspective of facebook, that's where your mission takes you anyway. >> he has so many social goals in his mission, but his social goals could become financial goals, and the more people who are conne

before zuckerberg raised it.at to be sure. we've high lighted in gold all the countries that are well connected, united states, canada, europe, many of the asian countries. all the other colors and dark reds sort of places out there those are places where they are not widely well connected. they all have hot spots but others not so much. look at one country, ma learning awi. this is a population of about 15 million people, average annual salary $1500. that's barely getting by. very hard to have any kind of extra money to kick into a project like this or sustain it. internet usage very low about 2%. why is it so hard in places like that? much of the population is rural. there are people who are far away from the centers where you can easily set up everything you need for them which is the key. infrastructure. do you have the roads? do you have the reliable electricity? do you have the reliable support even if you put the resources in there for people to do this through cell phones or otherwise. this, jake, these f
