WEBVTT 01:00.000 --> 01:14.120 Although I did actually watch the very first episode of Doctor Who, my really 01:14.120 --> 01:19.440 strong memories of watching it when I was young were of Patrick Troughton. I 01:19.440 --> 01:24.520 mean I remember that enormously long one, I think it was called War Games, which 01:24.520 --> 01:29.080 went on, it seemed like, for a couple of years, which was a fantastic story. I 01:29.080 --> 01:32.360 think his son might have been in an episode of that, David Troughton, my old 01:32.360 --> 01:37.760 friend. I knew Patrick well-ish before I came into Doctor Who because I had 01:37.760 --> 01:40.600 shared a flat in London with David Troughton when we were both young 01:40.600 --> 01:45.280 actors and when David got married I was his best man and obviously being his son 01:45.280 --> 01:48.720 Patrick was at the wedding. So that was the first time I met him and found him a 01:48.720 --> 01:52.760 charming and delightful man. The next time I met him of course was once I was 01:52.760 --> 01:57.840 playing Doctor Who myself and we did The Two Doctors together and I was a little 01:57.840 --> 02:03.120 bit nervous because, you know, for me he was the governor. He did the hard job. The 02:03.120 --> 02:07.600 first regeneration, if it hadn't been as classy and successful as it was, there 02:07.600 --> 02:11.280 would never have been a third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and all those 02:11.280 --> 02:19.920 other ones. So his wonderful, sly, oblique, louche performance as the second Doctor 02:19.920 --> 02:25.080 kind of changed the mould of Doctor Who. He was quite different but he was spot-on, 02:25.080 --> 02:29.480 he was right and it was a very compelling performance. So I was a 02:29.480 --> 02:35.320 bit in awe of him but within minutes of rehearsing for Two Doctors I realised 02:35.320 --> 02:39.640 that I was working with not only a gentleman and a very fine actor but a 02:39.640 --> 02:45.520 very nice man as well and we had great fun, enormous fun together doing it. So I 02:45.520 --> 02:50.520 have more affection for him. I have a perfectly good relationship with all the 02:50.520 --> 02:56.880 Doctors but for me the daddy of them all is Patrick and I'm delighted to be 02:56.880 --> 03:02.240 associated with a tape that's in, or a CD or whatever they were playing this on, 03:02.240 --> 03:08.560 that is in his honour. Let's hear it for Patrick Troughton. 03:08.560 --> 03:21.920 Well to be honest with you my memories of Grimsdyke Mansion was a, it was a very, 03:21.920 --> 03:29.240 very eerie place to work and nobody ever told you that a murder was committed 03:29.240 --> 03:34.120 there until we were nearly finished shooting that night, well that morning 03:34.120 --> 03:39.000 rather because we started very late at night, went through the complete night 03:39.000 --> 03:45.320 till next morning about four o'clock in the morning. But it was an experience 03:45.320 --> 03:50.320 which I do not want to repeat really because there was a scene there where I 03:50.320 --> 04:01.080 had to climb a rope to get to an upper, what you may call, an upper ledge and 04:01.080 --> 04:06.480 some goose park came along and decided to put oil all over my body so it would 04:06.480 --> 04:12.320 shoot better with a camera on the lights in the night but unfortunately 04:12.320 --> 04:19.560 they greased my hands as well. And when I tried to climb up I reached about halfway 04:19.560 --> 04:25.160 and I came back down halfway, then I went up another halfway, then I came back down 04:25.160 --> 04:29.840 halfway in and somebody wondered well when are you going to get it up? I said 04:29.840 --> 04:36.600 as soon as I can get the grease off my hand. And they had to leave me up there with a rope and a 04:36.600 --> 04:41.800 gantry to get to the top which was extremely funny. But we did it in the end 04:41.800 --> 04:47.720 and it came out alright which was quite good. Yeah. Also there was a funny 04:47.720 --> 04:56.440 scene we did as well, the roof scene, where I was fighting the Daleks because 04:56.440 --> 05:02.120 I changed from the Daleks to help Jamie in the long run. So in other words I 05:02.120 --> 05:07.600 started being a baddie and became a goodie. And this night, this day in 05:07.600 --> 05:15.600 question, I was on a roof trying to get out and I had to skate down this roof 05:15.600 --> 05:21.280 and hang on the guttering. Well this guttering had some hooks on it to hold 05:21.280 --> 05:26.200 the guttering in place and when I came down there to grab hold of the guttering 05:26.200 --> 05:35.440 the hooks got hold of me in my trousers. And it was not a very happy day for me 05:35.440 --> 05:41.000 but it was fun I suppose if you like to call it fun. But we did get a shot in 05:41.000 --> 05:48.000 with a half at the end of the day which was quite good. With what I have to say I 05:48.000 --> 05:55.720 also worked with a fantastic director Derek Martinez. He was good. You make 05:55.720 --> 06:00.840 mistakes, he corrected it. And when he corrected it, it came out well. Which I 06:00.840 --> 06:05.840 deem a good director. And that's all I have to say about the guys, which I 06:05.840 --> 06:12.920 enjoyed every moment of it. Wow, Winslow Davies, good mate, fantastic guy. We got 06:12.920 --> 06:18.160 on like a horse on fire from the first day I met. And also Marius Goring, 06:18.160 --> 06:24.840 unfortunately, he's not here today. But as everybody well know, 06:24.840 --> 06:31.160 Marius Goring was on from the old school of acting. He was a great actor, he'll 06:31.160 --> 06:37.760 always be remembered as a great actor. He was good. Unfortunately he's gone and 06:37.760 --> 06:43.840 that's one of the best actors that has gone to the great theatre in the sky I 06:43.840 --> 06:48.920 suppose. Maybe one day I'll be up there shaking his hand, who knows. 06:48.920 --> 06:57.160 Due to the popularity of the Daleks, their creator Terry Nation turned his 06:57.160 --> 07:04.000 attention to America to try to interest NBC in a spin-off Dalek serial. The BBC 07:04.000 --> 07:08.920 therefore decided to take the Daleks out of Doctor Who and so a final showdown 07:08.920 --> 07:13.120 between the Doctor and his arch enemies from Scarrow was decided on for the 07:13.120 --> 07:19.440 final story of season four. As with the power of the Daleks, Nation was too busy 07:19.440 --> 07:23.320 to write the serial but allowed former script editor David Whittaker to tackle 07:23.320 --> 07:28.040 the job. Whittaker submitted a brief outline of his proposed adventure simply 07:28.040 --> 07:32.640 called The Daleks. Over the next few months this would undergo some major 07:32.640 --> 07:36.960 alterations. Originally the Doctor and Edward Waterfield were to travel back to 07:36.960 --> 07:42.400 earth in the year 20,000 BC and meet a caveman called Og, from whom the Doctor 07:42.400 --> 07:48.480 is to deduce the essence of humanity. The Daleks' plan was to remove this quality 07:48.480 --> 07:53.120 from every generation of man, thereby eliminating earth as a threat. 07:53.120 --> 08:00.720 Meanwhile Jamie and Victoria were held hostage on Scarrow. The venue for most 08:00.720 --> 08:04.400 of the story's location filming was Grimsdyke Mansion House at Harrow 08:04.400 --> 08:10.440 Weald, Middlesex. At the time a rehabilitation centre, Grimsdyke had once 08:10.440 --> 08:17.040 been the home of Sir William Gilbert, one half of the famous opera writing team of 08:17.040 --> 08:21.960 Gilbert and Sullivan. Director Derek Martinez used the building itself to 08:21.960 --> 08:27.480 stand in for Maxtable's mansion and also set some of the 1966 scenes on its 08:27.480 --> 08:33.880 grounds. Unusually, recording at Grimsdyke involved night filming for the fight 08:33.880 --> 08:38.560 scene between Jamie and Kemmel. Other locations used were the hangers on 08:38.560 --> 08:42.120 Kendall Avenue in Ealing for the sequences at Gatwick Airport and 08:42.120 --> 08:48.040 Warehouse Lane in Shepherds Bush for the scene at the railway arches. Production 08:48.040 --> 08:52.240 then moved to the Ealing television film studios for the filming of the Dalek 08:52.240 --> 08:57.640 battle scenes and those of the Doctor and a Dalek watching Jamie's trials, 08:57.640 --> 09:02.000 which enabled Patrick Troughton to take a holiday while episode four was 09:02.000 --> 09:07.780 recorded in studio. After the departure of companions Ben and Polly it was 09:07.780 --> 09:11.920 decided that Samantha Briggs, the character invented by writers David 09:11.920 --> 09:16.640 Ellis and Malcolm Hulk for The Faceless Ones, would become the Doctor's latest 09:16.640 --> 09:22.240 companion. These plans had to be discarded however when the actress cast 09:22.240 --> 09:28.480 as Samantha, Pauline Collins, declined the offer. Fortunately David Whittaker had 09:28.480 --> 09:32.440 also been asked to include a potential new companion in his script and so 09:32.440 --> 09:37.720 Deborah Watling was asked to become the new companion in her role as Victoria. 09:37.720 --> 09:46.120 After the departure of Ben and Polly we watched the Doctor and Jamie still at 09:46.120 --> 10:08.200 Gatwick Airport as someone tries to make off with the TARDIS.
