I use DeOldify, with additional contrast and color correction via Avidemux.

Try Hybrid Automatic Video Colorizer.

It includes also DeOldify, you can download it at:
https://github.com/dan64/vs-deoldify

There is also user guide:

I do agree that HAVC requires more computational power and the minimum requirement to using it to have a least a RTX3060 (now more affordable than in the past).
In this post you can see a comparison between DeOldify and HAVC.

The movie Stagecoach is an example of movie that colorized with HAVC is much better than the B&W version.

You can find a list of movies colored with HAVC at this link

I don't think this hybrid colorizer is the right approach. It works by averaging two already highly computation-intensive colorizers, DeOldify and DDColor. Since DeOldify gives a result that is biased toward the blue end of the spectrum and DDColor gives a result that is biased toward the red end of the spectrum, averaging them produces a better result than either alone, but at the cost of too much computation overhead. I favor running one or the other of them and simply de-emphasizing blue or red in the output as needed.

There is also some promising exemplar-based colorization that can be mixed in, but it needs to be integrated more with the object-identification process in DeOldify or DDColor, rather than being an add-on.

Why do you feel that these movies need colorizing? Personally I feel it takes away something from the feel of the film.

There are several things you can do to personally feel more at ease.
1. Adjust your viewing device to remove the color. (Easily done in VLC under TOOLS-EFFECTS AND FILTERS)
2. Never again visit the collection and only view those items which make your feelings happier. (Your own collection here must be comprised of such items)
3. If you reside in the United States you can vote for someone who will force Archive.org to remove such items. (an unfortunate side effect of such a vote is your personal freedoms will then be at the mercy of soulless bosses)

Thank you for sharing.

Your reply made me laugh. Sorry, I didn't mean to sound all pained about it, I'm actually seriously interested in why you feel these movies need colorizing, which you didn't actually address. I don't need to "feel more at ease". I just feel the original color has a more intriguing look, and the reason why some directors choose to film that way for certain movies today eg. Ripley series 2024

Hi George,

Do your colorizations have any licensing / copyright restrictions of note? I would like to use small snippets of public domain works for a project I'm working on.

Thanks!

In the spirit of the Internet Archive, George has always made his colourisations free for anyone to use.

Thanks for the info about what software you use! I use Deoldify and Avidemux too, but the end result always loses so much picture quality, whereas yours stay very sharp. What export codec do you use in Avidemux? I use Nvidia H264, maybe one of the other options would be better.

Thank you for all the wonderful colorizations, great work.

Hi Ezzy,

I use "Mpeg4 AVC (x264)" along with Donald Graft's "Msharpen" filter, which sharpens edges without amplifying noise.
