SCOTT HOLT BAND
Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder. It's a subjective thing that means different things to different
people. Music is often judged by similarly vague standards. What is art to some is noise to others.
My music definitely falls on both sides of the argument, for some people, from time to time !
This record is different from any record I've ever been a part of We recorded it in one day, in the middle
of a southeastern U.S. tour. With the exception of the overdubs done by Keith, Tab, and Janet, nothing was
changed from the time we% lit record until we left the following morning. It’s full of mistakes, mostly mine.
I left them in, because I was determined to make a record that was as honest as possible. We live in an age
When technology makes almost anything possible, but the art of creating music is in danger of being buried
in that sam^fechnolpgy I wanted to prove to myself that you can still make a record of performances and
it will sound right. Mailed it CHIfpED FRONT TOOTH, because of something my wife pointed out to me.
She and I were listening to a rough mix one day and I was apologizing for and explaining the mistakes,
When she pointed out that sometimes it’s the little imperfections that make something more beautiful
A beautiful girl with little laugh lines at the corner of her eyes or maybe even when she smiles she
reveals a chipped tooth that somehow makes her more real and more beautiful than if she were "perfect".
If you come see us live, you won’t hear perfection, but hopefully you’ll hear flashes of "perfect
imperfection"; real, honest music played with joy and love from our hearts to yours.
The songs on this record are a combination of the things that have inspired me and the results of that
inspiration. I hope that the influence of Buddy Guy, BB King, Jimi Hendrix, George Jones and Hsnk
Williams is heard and felt. These are my teachers and guides in the path that I’ve chosen and that has
chosen me.
My writing partner, Richard Fleming and I wrote five of the songs, and I am very proud of the result % ,
I have been blessed to have the opportunity to write with Richard and l am grateful to him for helping me
to create these songs. Producer/Drummer Tom Hambridge co-wrote " ONE DAy AWAY’ with us and I hope
that the message speaks to someone who can use it.
I chose to record five songs by some of the legends of Blues as well as some who deserve to be counted
among the legends. Howlin' Wolf, Willie Mabon, Sugar Pie Desanto and Bobby Bland were chosen, as Well
as the amazing Dave Bartholomew. These people are cornerstones of the art form that I have devoted my
life to promoting and protecting.
When I was growing up, I always read and wondered about the names that followed a song title on the
label of a record. Who was "Chester Burnette" and why did he write so many of Howlin' Wolf s songs ?
My teachers taught me, and it’s my humble prayer that I might be able to do the same for someone else.
The best way to insure that the blues will live on is to pass it down to the generations that follow.
If we expect there to be an art form called the blues in the generations to come, we have to remember
all of the great artists that came before and celebrate their art and lives.
Every song that we recorded for this record was done with love and respect in the hope that we will, in
some small way, remind people of those who came before and give a glimpse of some of the possibilities
the future holds for all music and for the Blues-in particular:
On past records, I have put the disclaimer, "recorded to be played loud!" Do this so that the angels who
created this music will be able to hear it and know that they are never forgotten.
