here is little doubt that Al will transform our lives.
The beneficial applications promise to be myriad.
“Al allows us to see patterns in data that humans can-
not grasp,” Stephen Cave, director for the Leverhulme
Centre for the Future of Intelligence, explains. “And that
will have benefits for all sorts of fields: from drug dis-
covery to improved energy use and from personalized
medicine to increasing efficiency in water crops.”
But there is a definite downside to the science, and
the proliferation of Al-generated deepfakes and misin-
formation might well affect our next elections. In Janu-
ary, two days before the New Hampshire primary, a robo-
call impersonating President Biden used Al voice-cloning
technology to discourage Democrats from going to the
polls. Last year, a series of photorealistic images depict-
ed Donald Trump being violently arrested by cops. A
fake video of Hillary Clinton showed her endorsing Re-
publican Ron DeSantis, and the DeSantis campaign dis-
tributed a deepfake of Donald Trump hugging Tony Fauci.
There is currently no federal law prohibiting the cre-
ation or proliferation of deepfakes. In fact, there is not
even agreement as to its definition. Though several states
have enacted piecemeal legislation, there needs to be
regulation at the national level to counteract manipulat-
ed media. And the Federal Election Commission must
move forward with rule changes to guard against the
use of Al deepfakes in campaigns.
The wheels of government move slowly; however, Al
is progressing at the speed of light. So especially in the
months ahead, dear readers, please be aware of Al ma-
nipulation, and maintain a healthy skepticism.
Keep in mind that in 2024 seeing should not always

fter its successful war of indepen-
] == from Mexico in 1836, Texas
existed as an independent re-
public for nine years, until joining the
United States in 1845. Then, in 1861,
it seceded with the rest of the Con-
federate states to wage our bloody Civil
War in defense of slavery. Ever since, there’s
been a virulent suspicion of and opposition to
the federal government in the Lone Star State.
Current Texas governor Greg Abbott has
channeled this spirit into a stubborn defiance
of Washington’s exclusive authority to reg-
ulate immigration. With “Operation Lone
Star,” he launched a counter to illegal
immigration along the U.S.-Mexico
border beginning in 2021. Last
year, he upped the ante, ap-
proving Senate Bill 4 in Decem-
ber, which allows state or local
police to arrest illegal migrants and
gives local judges the authority to order mi-
grants to leave the country. The Justice Department
is suing Texas over this rebellious law.
Abbott has bused illegal migrants to blue sanc-
tuary cities—New York, Philadelphia, L.A., Wash-
ington and Denver—by the tens of thousands, over-
whelming public services for poor and elderly people
in those cities. He illegally placed a string of buoys
festooned with sharp concertina wire in the middle
of the Rio Grande. A federal judge declared it illegal-
ly deployed and forced him to remove it. Along with
buoys, he erected miles of the same concertina wire
along the shores of the Rio Grande, in Eagle Pass,
Del Rio and other border towns. In Eagle Pass’s
Shelby Park, this barrier—looking like something
out of a WWI trench warfare scene—has prevented
U.S. Border Patrol agents from accessing and pro-
cessing migrants at these locations, including
those with medical emergencies. A federal judge
declared that border agents did not violate laws by
cutting through the wire, and ultimately the Su-
preme Court sided with the Biden Administration,
ruling that Texas could not interfere again with Bor-
der Patrol agents removing the wire.
In January, Abbott appeared on a podcast with
former NRA spokesperson Loesch and delivered this
disgusting quip: “The only thing that we're not doing
is, we're not shooting people who come across the
border, because of course the Biden Administration
would charge us with murder.” Actually, jackass,
that would be murder in any country in the world,
and any civilized administration on the planet would
prosecute it as such. The Houston Chronicle was
scathing about Abbott’s antics: “For Americans of
a certain age, Abbott’s defiance has a familiar ring.
It brings to mind Alabama’s ‘segregation forever’
governor, George Wallace, who in 1963 barred Afri-
can-American students Vivian Malone and James
Hood from registering at the University of Ala-
bama.” How did then-President JFK react to this
defiance? Enabled by Constitutional provisions, he
federalized the Alabama National Guard and made

it escort those two Black students onto campus.
Biden could do the same thing with the Texas Na-
tional Guard, if forced to, but that could prove akin
to pouring gasoline on a smoldering fire.
Cooler heads have tried to prevail and solve
what is acknowledged on all sides now, liberal and
conservative, as a crisis spiraling out of control,
with over 2 million illegal border crossings in both
2022 and 2023—all-time records—overwhelming
Border Patrol, immigration courts and the commu-
nities providing food and shelter for these indigent
people. For months, a new bipartisan immigration
bill was negotiated in the Senate. President Biden
lobbied hard for Congress to pass the bill that
would provide desperately needed additional funds
and guidelines for the problem. It was almost a
done deal, but guess who tossed a monkey wrench
into the works? The Orange Ogre from Mar-a-La-
go, of course: Trump flamed the bill, and his gutless
bootlicker in the House, Speaker Mike Johnson, de-
clared it DOA. Senate Republicans threatened to
filibuster the legislation, in a dramatic turnaround.
Why? A Harvard CAPS/Harris poll found that
immigration was voters’ number-one concern last
January, even over inflation, and Trump doesn’t want
a successful solution in this election year. No, he
wants the problem to fester and grow, so he can use
it against Biden in November. A Republican senator
who supported the bill, James Lankford from Okla-
homa, revealed this widespread sentiment in the
MAGA camp; he said that an unnamed popular
commentator warned him, “If you try to move a bill
that solves the border crisis during this Presidential
year, | will do whatever | can to destroy you, be-
cause | do not want you to solve this during the Pres-
idential election.” Abbott is a full-fledged MAGA man,
and his insurrectionist dramas keep the pot boiling,
with publicity pointing to Trump as the only solution.
ASSHOLE OF THE MONTH
But immigration policy is only one of Abbott’s
recent asinine acts. Last summer, as Texas en-
dured a record-setting heat wave, Abbott passed
the “Death Star” bill, granting the state
authority to strike down municipal ordi-
nances mandating crucial water breaks
for sweltering construction workers,
many of whom are Hispanic immigrants,
both legal and illegal, from Mexico and
Latin America. Death Star likewise
barred cities and counties from enact-
ing ordinances that go further than what
the state law allows. Just days before
Death Star was slated to take effect, a
State district judge ruled the bill uncon-
stitutional.
But wait—there’s more: A law
that passed the Texas Senate al-
lows the Texas Secretary of State to
overturn Harris County elections if the
county runs out of paper for more than an hour at
two percent or more of its polling sites. Hypocriti-
cally, Abbott spurns central authority in Washing-
ton in favor of state’s rights, but claims dictatorial
authority for his own capital, Austin. Who is the
real overreaching tyrant here? Last year, he led the
charge to pass seven anti-LGBTQ laws, including
One prohibiting young Texans from receiving gen-
der-affirming care, equating it to “child abuse.” In
2022, he banned the use of TikTok at Texas public
universities, claiming that the app poses “security
risks.” Several professors on Texas campuses who
use TikTok as a research tool filed a lawsuit against
this clear violation of the First Amendment.
Where Abbott really goes off the rails is on the
issue of guns and mass shootings. In 2021, he
signed off on a package of new gun-rights laws,
including House Bill 1500, which makes Texas a
“Second Amendment Sanctuary State,” supposed-
ly exempting it from any new federal gun control
regulations. Included was a new “constitutional
carry” law dispensing with the licensing require-
ment for concealed carry of a firearm.
A year later, 19 students and two teachers at
Robb Elementary School in Uvalde were massa-
cred. After this horror, Abbott uttered this absurdi-
ty: “It could have been worse...law enforcement
officials...showed amazing courage by running
toward gunfire for the singular purpose of trying
to save lives.” Bullshit! Those cowards hunkered
down inside the school’s hallway for over an hour
as the perpetrator slaughtered students begging
on their phones for help. Steve McCraw, director of
the Texas Department of Public Safety, later judged
the police response an “abject failure,” as did the
rest of the nation.
In conclusion, Governor Abbott, we'd like to re-
mind you of your state’s history: All those Texians
(mostly Anglo-American residents of Mexico before
1836) who fought for independence at the Alamo,
Goliad and San Jacinto...were actually illegal im-
migrants in the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas,
as it was known then. Chew on that, Asshole!

Chicago grew into a mecca of industry and power in the decades fol-
lowing the Great Fire of 1871. It became a bustling city offering a
wealth of opportunities, and the lure of a new life and a new job drew
thousands. With them came Emeline Cigrand from Dwight, Illinois, in
1892. Young, blond and striking, she was eager to explore the possi-
bilities of the Windy City’s booming economy.
Emeline proved herself ambitious. After a short spell working at a
rehabilitation clinic for alcoholics, she took a post as personal assis-
tant to a young doctor in the Chicago suburb of Englewood. She found
her new employer to be a handsome, commanding individual. She
greatly enjoyed the work and his company, and it wasn't long before
She fell deeply in love.
Soon her employer became her world. Every day she traveled to
his extensive property on 63rd and Wallace. A modern, oddly Gothic
structure, it was gargantuan in size and easy to get lost in; corridors
would taper off at unusual angles for no clear purpose, and occasion-
ally she'd open doors that literally led nowhere. Still, who was she to
question anything when she was so happy?
So she paid no mind to the bizarre warnings of a caller named Ned
Conner, who warned her to get away from the building. Nor did she
take note of her uncle’s suspicions about both her employer and
workplace. By that fall, she was completely besotted, and now a pro-
posal of marriage was offered, one she accepted without hesitation.

Emeline dreamed of the European honeymoon she was promised
and the prospect of having children with her beloved, who told her
he was the son of an English Lord. She allowed him access to her
savings (a sum of around $800), and life seemed to be perfect. Soon
she'd be wed to a successful doctor, a member of the aristocracy at
that, and her family would no doubt be ecstatic.
One night the doctor asked Emeline to retrieve something from
one of the rooms, a dark and foreboding chamber with a heavy door.
Upon entering, she felt a slight burning sensation on her bare feet.
The thick steel door closed behind her with a quiet thud. Very quickly
the room grew warm, uncomfortably so. The air became scarce. Her
chest tightened. An acrid substance burnt the back of her throat. She
pounded at the door, growing frailer by the minute, calling for her
lover. He did not respond. It was not that he was unaware that poor
Emeline was trapped. On the contrary, he was watching from a peep-
hole as the life drained from her. He had experienced all the carnal
pleasures her body would allow, but nothing could match the height
of arousal that came to him from observing her slow demise.
Emeline suffocated to death in a bank vault that had been cleverly
modified to look like a standard office or bedroom. When police in-
vestigated the premises years later, they found her footprint on the
steel door frame, the etching a result of acid on the floor and Eme-
line’s final desperate attempt to escape. >>

HOUSE OF HORRORS
Holmes' achievements contain all the staples of an American success story. An
astute businessman who made astronomical amounts of money in the late
1800s, he had an expansive portfolio of property across the country and was
liked by all who met him.
Unfortunately, behind this charming facade was a swindler and a bigamist, a
mass murderer the likes of whom people had neither seen nor heard of before.
A ladies' man with an opportunistic eye, he bedded and slaughtered countless
women. Estimates range anywhere from a dozen into the hundreds. Indeed,
Holmes' activities were so horrendous, they would have made Jack the Ripper
recoil in fear.
His block-long, multistory building, known as his Castle, was built in the run-
up to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. It was a lucrative and ambitious project,
with shops, restaurants, office space and apartments. And given its close prox-
imity to the proposed World's Fair site at Jackson Park, it was ideal real estate.
In actuality, the 162-feet-long by 50-feet-wide structure was an industrialized
charnel house for unsuspecting victims seduced by Holmes' manipulative ways.
Chicago was experiencing a population explosion. There was no shortage of
young women like Emeline Cigrand, coming to Chicago from all across America
looking for work and a fresh start. For many it would be their first time away
from small towns and their family homes. With dreams of a brighter future, they
were dazzled by the dark intensity of Chicago. Many were recruited by madams
as soon as they stepped off the trains. Duped by promises of an easy life, they
would only learn the true requirements of their new trade once it was too late to
back out. When these girls went missing, it was often a long time before anyone
noticed. ..if anyone noticed at all.

The ones who avoided being tricked into a life of inden-
tured sexual service needed suitable accommodation,
something a man such as Holmes was happy to provide. He
was adept at lending a sympathetic ear and offering com-
panionship on long, lonely nights. He was the smooth-talk-
ing man mothers warn their daugh-
ters about, a philandering playboy.
And his manipulative ways were
certainly not restricted to females.
Holmes hired contractors to work
on his building, but after completing
only a small portion of it, they would
be fired for shoddy workmanship or
some other claim of incompetence.
By doing so, the doctor barely paid
a penny for getting the Castle built,
and more importantly, he kept the
workers from finding out exactly
what he was plotting. One or two
peculiar features wouldn’t raise
much suspicion, but if workers
caught an overview of what Holmes
was planning, they would have run
from the scene in horror. The build-
ing was leased under a false name,
and multiple aliases were used to
acquire fine furnishings and decora-
tions for the stores and apartments.
Getting rid of Emeline Cigrand's
body was an easy task for Holmes.
The Castle was constructed with an
array of secret passages, asphyxi-
ation chambers and airtight vaults
and an elaborate system for the dis-
posal of corpses. It allowed Holmes
to kill at will, fearing no conse-
quence. Even if a terrified young
woman tried to escape, the layout
was designed to disorient and con-
tain. Holmes fit pipes into certain
rooms, allowing him to gas his vic-
tims as they slept or as he watched
from peepholes, gleaning satisfac-
tion from their painful suffocation.
Hidden, multistory chutes lined with
grease would transport bodies,
such as Emeline’s, down several
floors without guests noticing.
It was the basement, however,
that was the most terrifying of all,
fitted with acid baths for the dis-
solving of corpses and an oversized
kiln for cremation. It also featured
several torture devices, including a
medieval rack for stretching vic-
tims. He clearly took great pride in
his ability to plan and execute such
intricate death traps. But for Holmes,
murder was often just the first part
of a transaction.
Throughout the 1890s, he swin-
dled, stole and scammed his way to
a fortune, killing men, women and

children in the process. To work at the Castle, young, unmarried women needed a life insurance policy,
something which Holmes was only too glad to help pay for, provided he was the sole beneficiary of
course. Every one of Holmes’ victims was worth something, even—and sometimes especially—in death.
At the time medical schools and their students were crying out for fresh corpses to work on, as well
as complete skeletons for reference. Often they were willing to turn a blind eye to where they came
from—even doctors were creeping around in the dark robbing graves. Holmes, who had attended med-
ical school in Michigan, took notice of this need. A stint working in an asylum had furthered his macabre
sensibilities and solidified his view that people were simply items, products no different than slabs of
meat on a butcher's counter. After being prepared and sold, Emeline Cigrand's skeleton ended up on
display at the LaSalle Medical College of Chicago. >>

MIND-SET OF A KILLER
Filmmaker and author John Borowski has dedicated a significant por-
tion of his life to the study of Holmes and his legacy. His book The
Strange Case of Dr. H.H. Holmes compiles several publications from
the time the events were unfolding. Holmes’ memoirs are included,
as are court transcripts, a publication by Detective Frank Р. Geyer—
who pursued the doctor’s conviction relentlessly (7he Holmes-Pitezel
Case), and Holmes’ confessions. It’s a chilling collection of horror the
likes of which Stephen King would have difficulty imagining.
Borowski first discovered Holmes when he was in college and
would go on to make a documentary about him, in addition to films
about notorious killers Albert Fish and Carl Panzram. For Borowski,
what began as idle curiosity would send him on a journey into the
mind of a maniac.
“There was no other serial killer in history that designed a building
specifically for the purpose of disposing with human remains,” ex-
plains Borowski as he reflects upon why Holmes became such a fas-
cination. “You have to admire him for being a genius in everything he
accomplished. He knew the limitations of the law and how to stay one
step ahead of it. But then, on the other hand, he killed men, women
and children, all for financial gain.”
Borowski would travel across America in search of records, tran-
scripts and evidence surrounding the case that Detective Geyer put
together. What he found out would haunt him forever.
A MYSTERIOUS CHILDHOOD
Born in 1861, Holmes came from New Hampshire, and very little is
known about his younger days, other than that religion was aggres-
sively practiced within the household. He writes in his memoirs about
one particular incident. When he was a young man, a group of boys
dragged him into a doctor’s office (a place he describes as being of

“peculiar abhorrence”), where he was confronted with a fully articu-
lated skeleton. The bony hands were placed against his face. This ei-
ther terrified or transfixed the child. It was the first time he had seen
a human stripped of all flesh. It certainly wouldn’t be his last.
Like many men of that time, Holmes married young, at age 17,
to a woman named Clara Lovering. They had a child together, but it
wasn’t long before Holmes became bored and left them. Clara would
be the first of several wives. Shortly before moving to Chicago, Holmes
married Myrta Belknap, with whom he also had a child. While he had
abandoned Clara, he moved Myrta to Chicago with him, but she was
kept well away from the Castle and knew nothing about his many sex-
ual indiscretions.
For all of Holmes’ brutal murders, his wives were never harmed, a
mystery Borowski attempts to shed some light on. “Holmes was such
a forward thinker, who had everything meticulously planned out.
Everyone around him was a pawn. He knew that if he were ever
caught, he would need someone to say something nice about him;
something that wasn't detrimental to his character. His second wife,
Myrta Belknap, was set up in a nice house with her child, and she had
everything. She was comfortable. Holmes just went about his busi-
ness. One of the first people they interviewed after they went in the
Castle and found out about the atrocities in the building was Myrta.
Her immediate reaction was, ‘Well, | don’t know what he does at his
building in Chicago, but he's never harmed me or our child.”
For Holmes, it was all planning. He married a third woman, Geor-
giana Yoke, who said that she never knew of anything strange tak-
ing place.
“There would be times when Holmes would come in flustered, or
sweating, but again, as someone who’s newly married, your first re-
action isn’t going to be that your husband’s just come back from mur-
dering children. It wouldn’t cross your mind,” notes Borowski.

MURDER INDUSTRIALIZED
Holmes knew that he needed some assistance with his nefarious
schemes and so enlisted the help of several men. One, Benjamin
Pitezel, became a close assistant and confidant, taking part in multiple
murders, as well as helping with body removal and disposal. It was
Pitezel who brought Emeline into Holmes’ employ.
Charles Chappell was hired to clean the flesh from Holmes’ victims
and to reconstruct them as articulated skeletons for medical schools,
a lucrative business. Holmes would pay Chappell $36 for each corpse
he would strip and prepare. This was, of course, a small fraction of
what Holmes would make for himself.
The basement housed two vats, one of bleach and one of carbolic
acid, both for the purposes of searing flesh from bone. Chappell re-
called stepping into the basement and observing the remnants of
Holmes’ work, comparing the bodies he saw to skinned rabbits. The
doctor, it appeared, took great delight in toying with the innards of his
victims, as if performing some macabre, experimental surgery.
“One thing we know about serial killers and sociopaths in general
is that disconnection exists,” elaborates Borowski on the ease with
which Holmes dissected and disposed of his victims: “They see a body
as material. Something to be played with. They learn from that. FBI
profiler Tom Cronin, who | interviewed for my film, said that Holmes’
enjoyment when working with the bodies came from the fact that he
had complete control. The serial killer’s role is all about power and
domination over the victim—he could do whatever he wanted to the
body—and Holmes tried to maintain that throughout his entire career.”
Ned and Julia Conner, along with their daughter Pearl, came to live in
the Castle when, after a brief period of employment, the doctor sold Ned
his drugstore (along with its accumulated debts). Julia, an exceptionally
tall and enchanting figure, was enamored by Holmes. He seemed so
gentlemanly, so powerful and successful, everything she felt her hus-
band was not. Before long they embarked on a passionate affair, and
Julia fell pregnant. She wanted Holmes to marry her, and he agreed, but
said that a child would be out of the question at this point. His solution
was to perform an abortion, which would take place on Christmas
Eve, 1891. As she kissed her sweet daughter Pearl goodnight, Julia
no doubt spoke of the excitement that awaited in the morning. A stack
of presents lay wrapped and prepared. It was a Christmas that neither
mother nor daughter would ever see. Holmes killed Julia using a rag
soaked in chloroform, choking her to death. He skinned and gutted
her in the basement. The girl would be dealt with soon after, joining
her mother in eternal sleep in the small hours of Christmas morning.

BENJAMIN PITEZEL
Guests or residents would, of course, ask questions pertaining to
the whereabouts of those who went missing, but Holmes would shrug
them off with disinterest and apathy. He was so aloof and casually
dismissive that it rarely arose any suspicion. He firmly believed that
his shtick could get him out of anything.
Minnie and Anna Williams were two Texan sisters worth a small
fortune in property. It was Minnie the doctor set his sights on, and he
lured her to Chicago with stories of the remarkable future they'd have
together. Anna was initially suspicious but, upon meeting Holmes and
being treated to the delights of the World’s Fair, became convinced
that he was a man of great breeding and honor. This lapse in judge-
ment would lead to their deaths.
Anna met a similar fate to Emeline’s, except this time Holmes gassed
his victim as she floundered in the airtight vault. Minnie’s fate is a
mysterious one, but records show that Holmes sent two large, heavy
trunks to Charles Chappell’s house a few days after the Williams sis-
ters disappeared. In a final act of ghoulish magnanimousness, he
gave Minnie’s clothes to Mrs. Pitezel and her trunk to Pat Quinlan, the
Castle caretaker. >>

CAPTURED!
The Cigrand and Conner families, as well as several others, hired pri-
vate detectives to investigate the disappearance of their loved ones.
They would inevitably end up on Holmes’ doorstep. Being the master
manipulator that he was, the doctor would send them away satisfied
that those missing had all simply moved on, leaving no forwarding
address. He realized, however, that his time in Chicago was drawing
to a close. The Castle had tapped his fortunes, and his creditors were
becoming increasingly aggressive, even banding together with a team
of lawyers to confront Holmes and press charges. Holmes literally ran
away from the meeting during a brief recess.
He set fire to the Castle and fled, hoping to file it as arson and make
a Claim on the insurance before moving to Fort Worth, Texas, where
he had swindled the Williams sisters out of their property. Plans began
to construct a new version of the Castle there. He was still up to his
old tricks, in more ways than one. An attempted fraud scam soon
landed Holmes in prison. He’d simply picked the wrong mark.
While incarcerated, Holmes decided he would initiate a $10,000
insurance scam that would involve him faking his own death. This
would get him off the hook for any previous crimes and allow him to
start fresh. Currently arrested and detained with a petty criminal
named Marion Hedgepeth, Holmes promised to send Hedgepeth $500
once they were released, provided the convict assist him in finding a
trustworthy lawyer to help complete the scam. Hedgepeth steered
him in the direction of an attorney, but the scheme failed. Holmes ne-
glected to live up to his side of the bargain and never sent the $500,
a move that would have grave repercussions.
Undeterred, Holmes decided that he would carry out a similar
scheme with his assistant Benjamin Pitezel. To make it all easier (from
Holmes’ point of view), instead of hiding him, he simply murdered
Pitezel in a brutal and horrifying manner, using benzene and flame to
hideously burn and scar the body beyond all recognition.
The doctor then began the most audacious and remarkable period of
his murder spree, taking his need for control to new extremes. He wrote
to Carrie Pitezel, his assistant’s wife, telling her that Benjamin was still
alive, but must remain in hiding, lest the authorities discover their col-
laboration. She sent her children Alice, Nellie and Howard on the road
with Holmes, who, in an act of incredulous arrogance, then summoned
Carrie to follow them. At one point the children were writing lonely letters
to their mother, who unbeknownst to them was only a short distance
away. One of Holmes’ greatest mistakes was to not send those letters.
Holmes was finally arrested in Boston in 1894. Hedgepeth, still bit-
ter about not receiving his $500, had tipped off the authorities. Now
in custody, it was simply a case of attributing the suspected crimes
to him, although that in itself would prove to be very difficult indeed.
The Pitezel children had vanished.
A PINKERTON MAN
During the blistering summer months of 1895, Detective Frank P.
Geyer left Philadelphia on a new case. His heart was broken, for a
house fire had robbed him of his wife and 12-year-old daughter.
Something about this new assignment greatly troubled him, because
there were missing children involved. The suspect, a man named Her-
man Webster Mudgett, languished in a Moyamensing Prison cell after
being apprehended for insurance fraud, but Geyer knew there was
more to it: One thing was certain. He wasn’t going to let this mystery
go unsolved, whatever the cost.

Traveling in stifling train cars and dusty coaches, he journeyed
across America and Canada, embarking on a painstaking, frantic
search for the Pitezel children, literally going from door to door. The
suspect had allegedly faked the death of their father to collect an in-
surance premium of $10,000. Not only did Geyer believe that Ben-
jamin Pitezel had actually been murdered, but was convinced that the
children had met a similar fate. It seemed impossible to prove what
had happened to the children, but Geyer was a Pinkerton.
The Pinkerton National Detective Agency was feared by criminals
throughout the land. If the Pinkertons were after you, your cards were
marked. Their motto was “We Never Sleep,” and their success rate
was phenomenal.
THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY
Geyer didn’t stop searching. Using the unsent children’s letters, which
had been recovered from Holmes, his journey brought him to Toronto
in July. Through hotel records, he discovered that the two Pitezel girls
had stayed with Holmes, but there was no mention of Howard. They
received a tip that someone remembered Holmes renting a house on
St. Vincent Street.
When Geyer interviewed Thomas Ryves, the neighbor of that rental
house, he was told how a man had arrived at the property with very
little furniture. Just a large trunk and a mattress. The new tenant called
over and requested the loan of a shovel. Geyer knew exactly what to
expect as he asked Ryves if he could borrow it as well.
Investigating the basement of the rental, Geyer found a loose patch
of earth. Frantically digging into it, using the same spade Holmes had
held a few months previously, he released a plume of toxic gas from
the decomposing bodies. He finally found what he had been searching
for all this time. The nude corpses of the Pitezel girls lay rotting in the
basement, to the complete ignorance of the current tenant. One of the
corpses, Nellie’s, was missing its feet. Nellie had been born with a
club foot, and Holmes was trying to disguise her identity. There was,
however, no third body. The case continued.

Geyer had investigated thousands of leads and was still getting
nowhere in his search for Howard. It was now August, and he had
traveled as far as Indianapolis. Holmes was in prison, but unless
Geyer could tie him to the murders, he would get off lightly. In the
meantime, the doctor penned his memoirs, in which he professed
his innocence, claiming to have loved the children like a father.
Geyer was now a national celebrity, and the case became a pop-
ular murder mystery.
Then, with a stroke of immense luck, Geyer met a man who
had rented a house to Holmes in which he had installed a large
woodstove. Holmes had also been to a local repair shop, where
he had some surgical tools sharpened. When Geyer searched the
house, he found the gory remains of Howard Pitezel stuffed into
the chimney of the stove. A charred bulk of festering organs was
discovered, along with some teeth and a portion of jaw. Howard's
favorite tin toy, a gift from his father, was found at the scene.
Now that Holmes could be indicted on murder charges, every-
thing changed. The police began questioning known affiliates,
such as Pat Quinlan and Charles Chappell. Gruesome truths were
revealed.
The remains of multiple victims were discovered in the Castle.
Bones and teeth of men, women and children were found in the
basement. It was the most horrifying event in Chicago's history,
and the case shook the entire world.
Holmes, however, remained nonplussed by the whole affair.
Even when he stood trial, in an act of defiant hubris, he chose to
represent himself. As Carrie Pitezel stood in the dock crying,
Holmes simply sat with a gaze of complete disinterest. Even the
judge wept at the description of this barbaric slaughter of inno-
cent children.
William Randolph Hearst made Holmes a generous offer to
write his confessions, in which he admitted to 27 murders, some
of which have since been discredited. Holmes was proven to be
human after all when he was hung on May 7, 1896. The true to-
tal of his victims went to the grave with him. In a final act of
bizarre control, Holmes requested that his coffin be filled with
cement and that his grave also be sealed so that no one would
interfere with his body in death. For some reason, this request
was honored.

In his confession, with characteristic pomposity, he wrote of how he
felt he was physically changing as he was incarcerated, becoming more
like Satan himself. "| am convinced that since my imprisonment, | have
changed woefully and gruesomely,” Holmes noted. “My features are as-
suming a pronounced Satanical cast... My head and face are gradually
assuming an elongated shape. | believe fully that | am growing to resemble
the Devil.”

behind-the-scenes work—the editing, social media, advertising?
So yesterday | had sort of a day off, which meant that | was up at 5:30.
| was in the gym for an hour and a half. | had to go shopping, trying to
find lingerie, which is actually very difficult! Everything is sheer these
days [/aughs]. When you want to take photos, you can’t have anything
showing, so it’s going through all these stores trying to find some-
thing opaque, which is difficult. People laugh, but |’m like, “No, it’s
hard to find something that is flattering, fits you and is opaque.”
Then | worked on a script. My husband asked me to do a follow-up to
something we just released, which is called My Stepmother's Body. |
write all of my stuff on Final Draft. | try to do everything as professional-
ly as possible even if I’m the only person seeing it because, first of all,
| think it’s good to build those habits, and second of all, | do think that the
people who have gone before me have established best practices, and
| am very happy to learn from those people. So | wrote scripts, chatted
on OnlyFans, posted to my social media, took pictures, took video.
What goes into the editing process of your scenes?
My husband edits for me, thank God! | think he really filled in the gaps
in my production. | was not getting the best sound quality, and his
fetish is hypnosis, so for him sound is very important. He really upped
my production. We got a Sennheiser shotgun microphone, we record
to an H4n Pro for audio, and | do think | have some of the best audio
in this business.
For your scenes, it’s critical.
It is. It’s a lot of talking. You can’t really watch my porn with the sound off.

How do you know that? Are you not a nice boy? [Laughs.]
Well... Speaking of your scenes, the taboo porn genre has really
exploded in popularity in recent years. All these companies are
shooting “step” scenes and pushing the boundaries of XXX.
Why do you think that is?
Well, | don't know why other people like it, but | know why | like it.
Why do you like it?
| think for some people it’s like an age gap thing, and for me it is not
an age gap thing at all. My husband is older than | am, and he still
calls me Mommy all the time. | have a little boy toy down here in L.A.,
and | think he’s about to be 35, and | like when he calls me Mommy.
lm 38, so it's not really an age gap. First, | like that it’s dirty, that you're
not supposed to be saying that during sex. | kind of like that little break-
ing of taboos, where | get that kind of frisson of anxiousness and
embarrassment that | find exciting. So it’s dirty, it’s taboo, and it’s
wrong in a way, but also it’s not really hurting anybody, so it hits all of
those points for me.
Couched in porn is this idea of fantasy. It’s not reality.
It's not real! | hate that so much, when I’m doing a POV thing and I’m
talking to the camera and | have to say “step.” It’s just so stupid.
| mean, we get why you have to. There's legal-
| don't get why | have to! | think it’s dumb! Why can they make Game
of Thrones and say whatever sick things they want? Why is that
okay?! Why don’t they have to be stepsisters and stepbrothers?
So when did you start making fetish content and why?
| started making fetish content—or really started focusing on it when
| broke up with a girlfriend and she started doing it. And | thought, You
know what, anything she can do I can do better. It was a competitive
thing. And | won.
At what point in your career was that?
2005, maybe. Not immediately, but early. | had been talking about it,
and then we broke up, and she kind of stole all my ideas. | was pretty
upset about that at first. ve kind of come around, and Рт like, well,
it's not like you can copyright an idea. If it's just an idea, and you're
not doing it, whatever. But at the time it enraged me [/aughs].
Understandably.

lights, and | made some truly awful content, which l'm sure is still out
there. It's a little bit embarrassing to see me go through self-taught
film school and doing bad work. | think I’m doing better now. I'm sure

rassing, but as of right now I’m proud of it.
A lot of your content tends to skew taboo—step-scenes, ABDL,
etc. Is this a way of acting out your own fantasies?
| occasionally shoot something that I'm not super into, but no, | enjoy
everything that | shoot. I’m so sorry, I’m disgusting. [Laughs.] When

| show up on set, people are like, “Ugh, we have to do another ‘mom’

You fully immerse yourself in those roles, and acting is often an
overlooked part of porn. Do you enjoy the acting aspect of your
scenes?
| enjoy every part. | read about film production all the time. | think it’s
important to have good actors. | think it is important to be superlative
in every aspect of production. Sound design, writing, acting. | just
can't really watch porn if the acting is bad.
It really does kind of take you out of the scene when it’s over-
the-top bad.
Well, | start thinking about what | would be doing differently. | need to
be able to respect the performers.
For the uninitiated, what is ABDL?
ABDL stands for adult baby diaper lover, and people are always very
confused. Every partner | have ever had has been kind of grossed out

by it at first, and then, by the time our relationship matures, they’re
really into it. My husband at first was like, “You want to do what!?”
And now he’s like, “You want to do it? Let’s do it!” It combines a lot of
things that | like. It combines taboo role-play. It combines power ex-
change. There’s a lot of pageantry to it. There’s a lot of humiliation
involved. There’s fetishism. There’s pee. | feel like when you put all
those things together, it kind of makes this weird thing, but whenever
| break it down, people are like, “Oh, yeah, | like that. | like that. Oh,
yeah, | like that.” And it’s been pretty easy to convince people to try it
out when we're face-to-face and they want to fuck me.
Along with that, you’re basically an expert on age play. You’ve
written two books on the subject.
l've written two self-published books, but thank you.
What are their titles, and why did you want to write them?
Again, it was to show an ex that сап do a better job than they could. The
first was The Age Play and Diaper Fetish Handbook. The second was The
Big Book for Littles. | actually prefer the first one, but most people prefer
the second. | think that part of it is the writing style. For the first one |
had been reading a lot of very highbrow erotica, written in very technical
English, and the second one has more of a colloquial vibe to it, so | think
that it’s easier for people to read. If you're into it, you should try one.
Do you plan to do any more writing, either within the industry or
outside of it?
It is something that | want to continue. | want to make dirty movies. |
would love to just write scripts at this point in my career. | occasion-
ally write short stories or satire or didactic pieces, but right now |
want to write fully realized adult feature scripts—you know, as soon
as that next billionaire sugar daddy comes along.
You just need a big-time producer.

be it'll be a cult classic.
You've described yourself in your personal life as a switch.

How does that play out in your scenes, and how does that affect
your sex life off-camera?
| just had something released not too long ago with little Apollo—well,
he's not little-with big Apollo Banks, and whenever I'm talking limits
with the male talent beforehand, Гт always like, “So you can choke
me if | can choke you." Apollo was like, "All right, you can choke me."
So there's part of the scene where I’m choking Apollo and he's chok-
ing me back, and it's like a Super Saiyan [mimics loud yell] vying for
supremacy. And | don't know— have to rewatch it 一 | don't feel like
either one of us really won; | feel like it was a draw.
As far as in my personal life, when I’m with my husband or some-
one off-camera, it's just kind of a back-and-forth. Someone is in
charge; then someone switches. And it kind of just flows very natural-
ly. As long as somebody is being degraded and controlled, I'm happy.
What is your favorite type of role to play in scenes? Is there also
a role that you haven't taken on yet that you would like to play?
| do like playing the Mommy Domme. What | would like to do more is,
honestly, just husband and wife stuff where you subjugate your

husband and now he’s calling you Mommy, which | don’t feel is very
represented in porn, but it hits my taboo buttons. | think that’s fun,
like a man that you kind of like own, because that’s kind of what
marriage is; it’s when you own a man. [Laughs.] | would like to do
more of that. Obviously, ۱۵ like to direct a lot more. What else would |
like to do more of? Just like housewifey stuff, corrupted housewifey
stuff, you know. That would be fun. Because I’m always Mommy,
which | do like, but | like other powerful female archetypes: a CEO or
anything where you get to boss somebody around. | do get to be a
therapist a lot.
The word MILF in porn can create two interesting dynamics. On
the one hand, some stars can get pigeonholed into certain roles
based on their time and their experience, but on the other hand,
it has allowed some women to come back and even flourish and
start almost a new, budding second career. How do you feel
about the term MILF and that role in porn?
| can’t say what’s good for somebody else’s career. | just like it. But
I’m one of those obnoxious ones who was trying to be like, “I’m a
MILF," at 22. So I’ve always loved the MILF thing. | sometimes feel
like some girls get angry when a 26-year-old is like, “Oh, I’m a MILF.”

Have you read The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides? There's part
of it where he talks about this upper-middle-class family that’s from
old money, and he’s talking about the furniture in their house being
older furniture that has been very delicately used over generations.
There’s just something about a very beautiful, elegant, older woman
who has taken care of herself, where she just seems like treasure.
And | like that. Just like a very elegant woman, you know—she’s well-
dressed, and | just think that is so attractive. And you don't really get
itin younger girls because they haven't shown that they can do it over
time. It's not like this sustained effort for a long period of time. So
women like that seem, to me, like treasure.
Do you think that you're hitting the prime of your career?
| think I’m getting there. There's this idea that life begins at 50, and |
am very much looking forward to being foxy over 50. | feel like as | get
older, | get more powerful, and | get more recognition in the industry,
and people see more of what | can do. | really want to be 42, because
that's the age of all the moms in all the sitcoms and all the cartoons:
Francine Smith is 42; Marge Simpson is 42; Lois Griffin is 42. I’m
looking forward to it.
Reagan Foxx was so sweet to me after she won [2023 XBIZ] MILF
Performer of the Year. | DM'd her and was like, "Congratulations. You

| wrote a script, and | think it's really good. It's just got some really
great scenes; it's sexy; it's got a really fun main character. | actually
think that it's going to appeal to both a masculine and feminine audi-
ence. It's a barbarian movie. | love barbarian movies, it's my favorite
subgenre.
Like Conan?
Oh, yeah! Conan, Red Sonja, Conquest. | just saw The Sword and the
Sorcerer for the first time. | love barbarian movies. Have you seen
Sorceress? It's dirty! It’s fucking dirty! Twin girl barbarians!

Yeah. They're kind of bimbos, but it’s good. So, yeah, I’m working
on that. It’s called Seeker in the Shadows. You know, | have a vis-
ion of it being colored like a Nick DiLiberto cartoon, but | want it to

it's fucking weird, but | really want to see it get made. lm kind of
exploring different avenues of what | can do. I’ve been reaching out
to different animators, trying to talk about like, “Well, can you help
me do a proof of concept?” | don’t have a lot of experience direct-
ing animation, so | would need a director to work with who under-
stands the technical side of it, and maybe | would be more of a pro-
duction designer. Because | don’t know that | could fully direct anima-
tion without help. Like the Dunning-Kruger effect, | know just enough
to know that | really do not Know. People are like, “Well, just do it
yourself,” and I'm like, “I don't think you really know what that en-
tails.” So hopefully that gets made. | also have a different live-action
script for a vampire thing that | really want to do that | think would be
fun to put around on the adult film festival circuit. We'll see if anything
comes of it.
Is there a favorite or memorable scene that stands out to you?
| actually like this one scene with Dante Colle for MILFY. | thought it
was really gorgeous. It’s one of my few scenes that | have watched
beginning to end multiple times. | made my husband watch it. There’s
voice-over in it, beautifully shot. At no point was | bored or like skip-
ping through it, so | felt like it was hitting all its beats really, really
well. We had good lines. They had these beautiful slow-motion shots,
and when we were doing it, there were these little things that we
were doing, and | was like, Where are they going to use this footage?
But then seeing it all cut together, | was like, Oh, yeah, Kayden Kross
is actually really smart. Kayden is really bright. The scene was really
hot too.

who you like working with?

artistic; he is intelligent; he’s funny; he’s
